Conduct Disorder
A behavioral condition involving a pattern of repetitive and persistent conduct that infringes on the basic rights of others or does not conform to established societal norms or rules that are appropriate for a child of that age. A child or teen with conduct disorder may display aggressive or even cruel behavior toward other people, which can include bullying or threatening others; initiating fights; using weapons that could cause serious harm and forcing others into undesired sexual contact or activities. Individuals affected with the disorder may also engage in non-aggressive behaviors that can include a loss or damage to property, deceitfulness, theft, lying, breaking promises and irresponsibility with debts and other legal obligations. Children and teens that are affected with this disorder have been found to persistently engage in serious violations of rules that lead to confrontations at home, at school and/or in the workplace. Conduct disorder has been known to lead to the development of other anti-social disorders during adulthood.
Question: What percentage of kids with Conduct Disorder go on to develop psychopathy? I was diagnosed with Conduct Disorder and psychopathic tendencies at 15, I'm 18 now.
I was wondering whether I'm a sociopath or a psychopath.
*** off Slardi.
Answer: having Conduct disorder dose not always mean the person will develop in to a psychopath, but to be a psychopath the individual needs to have been diagnosed with conduct disorder. so there is the possibility you could be psychopathic.
Question: Are Conduct Disorder/Antisocial Personality Disorder considered to be serious mental illnesses? Also, what percentage of people with Conduct Disorder go on to have Antisocial Personality Disorder?
I'm currently being assessed for Antisocial Personality Disorder as I've had a history of Conduct Disorder and I just turned 18 the other week.
Answer: Yes to both. However, be careful with Conduct Disorder. The underlying theme to CD could be ADHD, a specific fear or phobia or an issue with executive functions. People with CD could be really vindictive and want to hurt others or do damage to society. Get a DSM-IV and look these up. The main characteristics of APD are failure to conform to social norms, deceitfulness, umpulsivity, irritability and aggressiveness, reckless disregard for self or others, consistent irresponsibility and lack of remorse.

Question: Are kids with Conduct Disorder sadists by nature? As many of them later go on to develop sociopathy and from what I've read most sociopaths are sadists.
Also, could you give me a percentage of how many kids with aggressive Conduct Disorder (psychopathic tendencies) go on to develop adult psychopathy?
Answer: If you let children with CD grow up thinking it's alright, or beneficial to act in the ways that they do, then they have a very high chance of developing sociopathy. If you teach them not to be so destructive they might turn out okay.
Question: Do i capitalize conduct disorder in my paper? I'm writing a paper about conduct disorder should i capitalize it when mentioning it?
Answer: no if you are trying to modify the accepted definition you would write "conduct disorder"
Question: Has anyone had any success in dealing with a conduct disorder? Does anyone know of a facility in Texas that can take someone with a conduct disorder? My son has it and is 15 years old. He needs help, but most places won't take conduct disorders.
Answer: Try to locate a provider who does Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST). This is an intensive form of outpatient treatment that has proven very successful in treating conduct disorder. If MST works, your son might be able to avoid residential all together.
I was able to find two providers in Texas:
Center for Healthcare Services
San Antonio, TX
Tarrant County Mental Health Services
Ft. Worth, TX
I don't know how close either is to you though, and unfortunately, no addresses or phone numbers were listed. For more resources, you might also talk to someone at your local juvenile court.
Question: Are kids with Conduct Disorder child sociopaths? Surely they must be if Antisocial Personality Disorder are sociopaths, it stands to reason.
Also, are children with Conduct Disorder a psychopathic personality?
Please answer all my points.
Answer: Not necessarily.
Left untreated, it is highly likely that teens diagnosed with CD will advance to ASPD as adults. In fact, a substantial portion of even those who do receive treatment do likewise. The progression is typically ODD (oppositional-defiant disorder) as children to CD (conduct disorder) as teens to ASPD (antisocial personality disorder) as adults.
The term "psychopathic personality" is outdated. However, it is an appropriate term to describe teens with severe CD which is not responsive to treatment.

Question: Why do you think boys are more prone to "conduct disorder"? "Conduct disorder" refers to a group of behavioral and emotional problems in yougnsters. Children and adoloscents with this have great difficulty following rules and behaving in a socially acceptable way.
Answer: I think alot of the problems start when they are toddlers. People always tell me when i correct my son ohh hes a boys hes suppose to be that way. But a little girl is suppose to be reserved and quiet. It drives me nuts. I wnat both of my children to be respectful and polite not just my daughter. SO i just ignore it but i really think it comes from that. People expect it when they are young and then get angry when they continue it as they get into adolecence
Question: Is Conduct Disorder considered a mental illness? I was diagnosed with it but I'm not mentally ill.
Three psychiatrists altogether agreed with and confirmed this diagnosis.
I consider it to be nothing major, if anything I suppose have no conscience is a great advantage.
Is it a mental illness?
Because I don't feel "ill".
Answer: Yes.
If it is a diagnosis found in the DSM-IV, it is considered a mental illness/psychiatric condition.
Conduct disorder is largely behavioral. You won't "feel ill" due to it.

Question: How do I provide structure for my child with Conduct Disorder? It has been suggested to me to provide a very structured home setting for my 13 year old son. Can you provide me with any suggestions on what type of activities at home I can start with to provide this structure? Any legitimate and reasonable answers are appreciated!

Question: Do adolescents with conduct disorder develop antisocial behavior due to a genetic etiology ? Conduct disorder or a disregard for authority or rules demonstrated by maladaptive behavior is thought to develop into sociopathic character traits in adults. Genetics?
Answer: It would depend who you asked. My studies in abnormal psych have been heavily developmental based. What I think is:
1) There's a diathesis-stress interaction. That is, someone has the predisposition to a condition, but the right circumstances (or stresses) must be in place for it to be activated.
2) Antisocial, sociopathic, psychopathic disorders develop between the ages of 3-7 when the child begins to turn to peers as authority (as opposed to parents). The child that does not learn to balance authority with peer influence (and who has the "diathesis" or predisposition) will develop a conduct disorder.
I did a quick search and found this website that you might find interesting: http://www.education.ucsb.edu/jimerson/c… .
Question: Does this mean i have conduct disorder? On wikipedia i looked up conduct disorder and they said if you exhibted 3 of these symptoms in the last 6 months you may have conduct disorder and you have to have exhibited atleast one in the last 12 months.
I counted over 10 symptoms from the last 6 months and about one or two in the last 12 months.
Does this mean i got conduct disorder?
Answer: Not necessarily. It is easy for us to find symptoms that we can identify having. It takes a trained professional to be able to make a diagnosis. If you feel like you are having problems, the first step would be to speak to your doctor. Your doctor will be able to decide if you need to have a referral. Best Wishes to you.
Question: How can I dicipline an out of control 13 year old boy with ADHD and Conduct Disorder? A little history: I divorced his father who was not only abusive toward me but to all of my children. His father minipulates him every time that he talks to him, he sees 3 different councelors and a child psych. His father moved away and has not seen him in 4 and 1/2 months and told him the reason that he moved so far away was because of me. And my son believes him. I have tried everything, nothing works, he doesn't care what anyone thinks, he only cares about what he wants and doesn't care who he hurts in the process. WHAT DO I DO?

I HAVE spanked his butt, I have taken away everything in his room but his bed and cloths, everything is locked in a storage unit and NOTHING is doing the trick. He doesn't care. I tried to ignore him and make him stay in his room but when I do that he starts to hit me. I have bruises all over me from last nights fiasco. Then after I spanked his butt, he jumped out a window onto the roof of the building next door and was missing for 3 hours..
He is currently taking medication for his problem but nothing works.
Answer: Get back to the basics. By that I mean take away everything he owns. Leave just the bed and his clothing. As far as his wants he is old enough for his wants not to hurt him. I would make him learn respect for others and himself before he got any privileges. My son is 11 and ADHD. It worked for him he hated to see all of his stuff locked in the storage building, but he is behaving much better now.
Question: Where can I find studies on conduct disorder in adolescents? I am working on my senior BSW project...I procrastinated way too long. Anyway, I am looking for specific journal articles, and I can't find them in full text.
Answer: Check Highwire and your library. Not all the articles are full text, but there are a lot. If you find a couple of full-text articles, see if there is an author that is cited a lot. If Joe Smith has written a lot on conduct disorder, do a search on Google on Joe Smith and see if he has a personal website. Sometimes, since its their work, they can post it without copyright violations.
Question: How often does Conduct Disorder develop into Antisocial Personality Disorder?
Answer: I don't know......all I know is that I find most ppl annoying, so I can't stand being with ppl.
Question: How would a parent with Antisocial Personality Disorder look after a kid with Conduct Disorder?
Answer: Both parent & child need to stay in counseling. Learning unconditional love is a great start, children have it when they are small. If a child has a problem with social behavior though this parent should know better than most that the child needs outside help, & the parent needs to be involved also. No ones a perfect parent, so don't stress about that. Love is the most important ingredient in a child's life.....Good Luck & God Bless
Question: How do you use behavior therapy to treat conduct disorder juvenile?
Answer: Behavior therapy works on a reward system, you make a chart and talk about the behaviors you want to change, do this in a positive way...... Then set up a reward system for when the goal is achieved, set easier goals at first the key is to help them succeed..... I find it works best when the whole family uses the therapy together for instance mom is supposed to keep a calm voice when talking to the children, or dad can't yell at mom..... There are a lot of websites to help learn more..... Take the techniques then adapt it to work for your family...... Have fun with it and enjoy it go all out when you make the charts, we used poker chips and decorated our own jars to put them in, the attitude change in the children was great.......
Question: What is Behavior Therapy? How is it used to treat conduct disorder? I do not know the difference, to me its the same, but I guess my brother says it is not....
Answer: Behavior therapy is a form of therapy in which such things as reinforcement are used to change the behavior of the patient. For conduct disorder it could be a matter or positive or negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is like giving someone a reward for good behavior. Negative reinforcement is removing something negative for good behavior. Some people use punishment, but psychological research has shown that people don't respond as well to punishment. One type that I have seen for conduct disorder (and also things like ADHD) is that the parents (and teachers if you can get them involved) will get a jar, and everytime the doesn't get in trouble at school or cleans their room or whatever they get marbles in the jar and when it is full, they get a prize.
Question: If you get a disorder conduct charge which is a penal offense. How does it effect you? Such as if you get a background check goin into canada will they let you in. And what about putting this on Job applications. Or anything else it might have againt you.
the court date has not happened yet....from what i have gathered it will just be a fine no conviction...whats a "sealed" record
Answer: Were you actually convicted of disorderly conduct? Or did you have to pay a fine and they "sealed" your records? You need to provide more info.
*** If you go to court and just have to pay a fine, they will probably "seal" your records, which means if you apply for a job and the application says "convicted" of a crime - you would answer no. However, if you apply for a federal job (police, government), they will ask if you have ever been arrested. You will have to answer yes - you were arrested, but not convicted. I'm sure you will never have a problem with this even if it's on your record - most people are looking for people with a serious misdomeanor or felony charge. I'm sure you will have no problem getting into Canada. You are not the first person to be charged with disorderly conduct - it's really not that big of a deal. My husband has a "sealed" disorderly conduct and has a government job - the most important thing is to be honest about it. But really, it's not really that bad. Good luck to you.
