Orphan
Although this term has essentially been eliminated from normal use in our modern society, with reference to adoptions, it is still used with a very specific definition in the regulations of the U. S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, with reference to the legal status of foreign children that adoptive parents who are U.S. citizens are seeking to adopt and bring into the United States to live. In that context, this term refers to a child in a foreign country who has no living parents, or whose parents have disappeared or have abandoned the child, or a child who has only one living parent who is not able to adequately provide for the proper care and support of the child. In order for a child to be able to be brought into the United States for the purpose of adoption, it must fit this definition of being an "orphan."

Question: How did the poor orphan boy Alexander Hamilton get to be so famous? He was orphaned on the caribbean island of nevis and was brought to America after a terrible storm battered the island.
Who brought him here and how did he make such fast friends and acquaintences with the likes of the Schuylers, the Fish family, John Jay, George Washington, the Livingstons, the Morris'es, the Rensellaer's?
Did he know these men before he came to America? Who paid his passage?
What is the real story here? What am I missing about all this? How did the poor orphan boy wind up in such circumstances in high society, an overnight change from his previous existence?
Was he really more like a King? Who was his father? Mother? Maybe his father was an important man?
"There is something telltale about the way that he, his father, and his brother let relations abruptly lapse, as if the three of them were in headlong flight from some harrowing shared secret".
Alexander Hamilton, by Ron Chernow.
Hamilton's personal life and social position in the new nation took a decisive turn in December 1780, when he married Elizabeth Schuyler, daughter of the wealthy and influential General Philip Schuyler. This connection placed Hamilton in the center of New York society. In 1782, shortly after leaving the army, he was admitted to legal practice in New York and became assistant to Robert Morris (1734-1806), who was then superintendent of finance. Well before his 30th birthday, then, Hamilton had had a distinguished military career, knew intimately most of the leaders of the American Revolution, had achieved high social standing, and was recognized as one of the leading lawyers in the country. I guess the Schuylers were really wealthy people?
Answer: You misrepresent AH's background. His father was a younger son of a nobleman, hence unable to inherit. His mother had a somewhat difficult life, but in fact AH had a homelife until Nevis was hit with a hurricane. He was sponsored to go to New York, where he attended what was then Kings College, now Columbia, and quickly became known as a radical. Washington, who had no college education, needed an aide and hired AH. In this position he got to meet many prominent people in NY and elsewhere, including the Schuyler family, whose NY origins went back to when it was the Dutch colony of Nieuw Amsterdam, and were quite wealthy. When the Constitution was up for consideration AH was a leading figure in the state legislature for ratification, and authored the Federalist Papers. Washington picked him as the first Secty of Treasury because of his proven abilities and because he had a plan for handling the federal and state debts left over from the Revolution. Altho it is generally overlooked, a special clause was included in the Constitution which would have permitted him to run for President, had he desired.
Question: What country has the largest number of orphan children? Which countries follow it? Is there a list of the top countries with the most number of orphan children?
Answer: From what I hear it is Russia. Others that have lots of orphan kids are China, India, Guatemala
Pretty much all countries in the world have kids that need to be taken care of. If you are planning to adopt please consider taking kids that live in your own local area. If you live in the U.S. adopt kids from the U.S. don't go to another country and bring back more people...we have enough.
Question: What is the best way to sponsor an orphan? You know those programs where you sponsor an orphan, paying for part of their food or education? What is a reliable organization that I can trust.

Question: How can I adopt an orphan in Fable 3 after I am king and everyone is dead? I decided to be good my entire playthrough, and as a result everybody has died after my battle with the darkness. Now i'm trying to adopt an orphan, but the orphanage is empty. Am I screwed on getting this adoption achievement?
Answer: If you're willing, you can always just start a new save. It won't delete your current one. Otherwise, I don't know. You may just have to wait a while for the population to replenish, but I'm not sure if it does.
Question: Is it hard to get parts for orphan cars? My son is in desperate need of a cheap car. I've seen some pretty good deals on some orphan cars, like a Tercel or an Echo. Question is, can you still get parts for these cars now that they are no longer being made and how much of a problem will this be in the future?
Answer: You can get parts for anything still. Don't worry.
Question: How can I go about taking an orphan out for a day of activities in Texas? What are the requirements? My boyfriend and I would like to take an orphan out for a day of fun. It would only be for a single day. I know my mom and my grandma did something like this 40 years ago.. But do orphanages still have programs like this today? Any information anyone can provide would be helpful. :)
Note: I am aware Big Brother/Big Sister exists.. But we are looking to take a kid who does not have ANY parents out for a day.
Answer: Nice thought, but highly unlikely.
Do you realize if foster children "sleep over" a friend's house, the friend's parents are supposed to have background checks in some states?
You are not going to just be able to "take a foster kid out."
Now, here are some options:
1) Become a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for a child. It is a volunteer organization, but you will get to hang out and take out foster children. In some states, it is similar to Big Brothers/Big Sisters for foster kids. You will have to go through 40 hours of training, and shadow another CASA, and goto court before you get your "own case child." But it is not alot of work.
2) Volunteer at a group home. Then you will have a background check, etc and you could do something like read to the children, play games with the children, etc.
3) At the holidays, donate ALOT of toys, clothes, games, etc to a group home...because those kids don't get **** for the holidays.
These will help as much or more than just taking a kid for a day-out.

Question: How do I learn to love my orphan child as much as my real children? My child Roberta is an orphan and we got her from Romania after watching a 20/20 special years ago thinking she would be a nice addition to the family. While I am fond of Roberta, I do not love her the same way I love my real children and after years of having her, I can not see loving her like that in the future. How can you learn to love a child that you are really fairly apathetic about?
Answer: "A nice addition to the family" makes it sound like you went furniture shopping or something. Also, calling her "my adopted daughter" sounds like "my black friend" or "my brain-damaged puppy". More or an accessory than a real human, so you can feel so good about yourself and everyone can see what an amazing person you are. And as the poster above me said, you got her because of a TV show. Lovely.
Question: How do you know if a duck is a girl or a boy an orphan duckling appeared in my doggie door? An orphan duckling appeared in my doggie door i took it in how do i tell if its a girl or a boy?
Answer: I'm sorry but you cannot tell if the duckling is a drake (male) or duck (female). You will have to wait until it is fully grown to see what color it turns and what breed it is. Most breeds of wild ducks will have the females a more drab color so they can hide on their nests and not be easily seen by predators.
Question: How can I help a 21 year old orphan? I recently found out that our wonderful babysitter has been an orphan since she was 14 years old. She has been out of the system and supporting herself since she was 18. She has a car, an apartment, and is attending the local community college but she is struggling to make ends meet. Are there any government programs? Are there any foundations? Scholarship programs? etc.... My husband and I have offered to take her in but she is an adult and wants to remain independent. Any ideas?
Thank you so much!!!!
Answer: Buy her some shopping every now & then (food) that should help her out. Or buy some other things you know she might need.
In this way you're giving her gifts rather than supporting her & she retains her independence
Question: How can I help a 21 year old orphan in Columbus Ohio? We recently found out that our wonderful babysitter has been an orphan since she was 14 years old. She has been out of the system and supporting herself since she was 18. She has a car, an apartment, and is attending the local community college but she is struggling to make ends meet. Are there any government programs? Are there any foundations? Scholarship programs? etc...
Thank you so much!!!!
Answer: Go to fastweb.com
It is a site that compiles scholarships and tells you which ones you're eligible for once you fill out a questionnaire. Then help her apply for those scholarships. Some of them require her to write an essay -- proofread these for her.
Rather than giving her a handout, help her learn how to do things by herself. Teach her things that you've learned along the way. Be her friend and her mentor.
But for the love of god, don't try to be her mother. I was orphaned at a young age and hated it when people tried to replace one of my parents. Nobody else can fill those shoes.

Question: Can you become an orphan if you run away? Let's say you had parents but they abandoned you, so someone else took you in.
But what happens if you ran away from that person? Does that make you an orphan if you never return to them...but they don't legally own you?
This is for a Play*
Denise....
I am 26 years old. Again...this is for a play. I am kind of OLD.
It's why I am asking in the Performance Arts.
Answer: Elaina, haven't I told you before not to run away from your parents!! :P
You would technically be an orphan in the case of what you describe. A lot of these people answering are ignorant. It is also called an orphan when you don't have someone looking over you to protect you, regardless of whether your biological parents are alive or not.
But, I know this is just a mask to show that you are really planning on running from home. Don't do it! If you're having trouble with your parents, give me a call before you do something as crazy as running away! Please Elaina, I beg you not to do it ;)
