Supplemental Security Income
A Federally-funded needs-based disability program for adults and children which provides monthly cash benefits and, in most states, automatic Medicaid eligibility.
Question: If you receive Supplemental Security Income, can it be taken because of a delinquent student loan? I receive Supplemental Security Income. I owe a delinquent student loan since 1981. Can the government take it if I have a checking account with direct deposit?
Answer: Your social security can be garnished before it even gets to your bank account.
Question: Will my parents still receive Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income if they move in with me? My parents (retired and disabled) are receiving Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid in Hawaii. If they move in with me to the state of Washington and live with me, would they still be able to receive those benefits? If so, what would the process be like?
Answer: I know that their SSI will follow them if they move - not quite sure about Medicaid, but that should follow them as well since it's a DSHS program (i.e. a federal program just like SSI is). It's probably just a matter of informing both DSHS and the Social Security Administration of a change of address.
Question: Can Supplemental Security Income have bank fees assessed? My understanding is that no financial institution or creditor can garnish, collect fees or in any way mess with Supplemental Security Income benefits (Social Security SSI).
Can someone please provide a informative response and please cite websites or law citations as sources.
Answer: A private company cannot garnish government benefits or public benefits. But a government entity can garnish your social security benefits. I looked through the SSA and the IRS website and could not find the answer about SSI garnishment. I do know that SS can be garnished by another government agency for a government debt like tax or student loan.
Question: Am I eligible for Supplemental Security Income if I'm not eligible for Social Security Benefits? I have 26 credits in social security but you need 40 at my age to be eligible for benefits :( I am 65 and I need to know if I am eligible for Supplemental Security Income. I am permanent resident alien so I only have a few years of work experience in america. Am I eligible, and if I am, how do I apply?
Answer: Not nearly enough info. SSI is a needs-based program and nothing in your question says whether you'd be eligible. See http://ssa.gov/ssi/text-eligibility-ussi… and http://connections.govbenefits.gov/ssa_e…
Question: Does anyone know if you can receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Disability Check if you have APD? Does anyone know if you can receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Disability Check if you have APD?
I believe my son of 18 years has Antisocial Personality Disorder, his psychologist said he has 'sociopathic tendencies'. And he has never held a job for more than 4 months without getting fired for one reason or another. I was just curious if the government would help out in this situation?
Thank You!
Answer: Same answer as when you first asked this question. You'll have to apply to find out.
Question: Is Supplemental Security Income the Same as Disability Income? I've been helping my mother-in-law through the disability benefit process. We received a call from Social Security and they told us that they anticipate an approval and that her application has already passed the preliminary approval process. We received a letter today that mentioned nothing of Disability benefits. It spoke only of Supplemental Security Income? What is the difference. Under disability, she would draw around $1200 a month but what about this Supplemental Security? Would it be about the same?
Answer: SSI is what a state feels is a fair amount to offer somebody based of there living situations, That all depends on the individual. And it will be usually ALOT less than SSDI. And the difference is when you collect SSDI that means they usually have considered you permanently disabled, as for SSI you usual will have to keep updating records of the situation and if they feel you don't need it anymore they will discontinue it as for SSDI you get it for life
Question: low income ssi seniors or disabled supplemental security income Social Security Income? WHERE on Internet does it list what amount of
1)supplemental security income is given in each state?
2)Low income Social Security Income is given in each state?
3)And other beneficial programs that disabled and elderly qualify for?
For individuals with disability
OR Senior /elderly who became legal citizens in the late years?
I'm not talking about illegal immigrants or immigrating so please no negative, harsh, or hateful comments!
Answer: Social Security is a federal program.
They have a really good site that answers many questions.
No one agency is going to help you out fully, You need to consult a social worker in your state to wind your way through the maze of requirements that various agencies ask for.
Once you are a citizen it doesn't matter when you became one.
IN some states they have an Office for the Elderly, or Aging. Try those first if they have them.
Question: What will happen to my SSI (supplemental security income) If i get married to someone under age? Im trying to get married soon. Im currently on SSI due to a car accident a few years back. The person im going to marry is under age and has a 6 month old baby. She has no job and no other source of income. How will this effect my SSI and can i claim them as dependents?
she is 16. but she has been recognized as an adult in the court systems
Answer: I have provided a link to the rules that apply. I think it may provide the answer.
Question: Social Security Benefits v. Supplemental Security Income? What's the difference between Social Security Benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)? My college's financial aid office is asking for proof of SSI and says they won't accept the SSA-1099, but that's the only form I have that tells me I received federal help for 2007. My SSA-1099 merely says Social Security Benefits Statement on the top.
I received money until I turned 18 in October 2007, if that helps.
Answer: SSI is a welfare payment that requires no work experience. You are receiving Social Security probably from a deceased or disabled parent. That benefit is based on the employment record of the person who earned the benefits for you.
So tell the FA office that you do not have SSI.
Question: Is social security money the same thing as Supplemental Security Income (SSI)? My parents receive social security money because they are old
My parents receive social security money but they aren't 65 years old and they don't work.
Answer: NOPE, not the same
Social security is insurance based retirement income. When you work, you pay in, you need many quarters to qualify for receiving benefits, and amount depends upon the money earned and paid in.
SSI is welfare and is administered or paid by Social Security, but is a different program. It's welfare for those who never worked, or didn't work enough to qualify for SS. It is a needs-based program, and all household income must be reported. You don't get SSI because you're old, but because you're decrepit, because you are unable to work, due to disability.
SSI is welfare and NOT taxable. SS may be partially taxed, depending on other income received.
Question: Who and how can someone receive Supplemental Security Income in Florida? What are the requirements? Where can one apply?
Thank you in advance!
One of my co-worker said; because he works only 24 hours a week (3 days) he gets this extra income to make up his wages because he he works less than 40 hours a week. He is in his 50s and not disabled at all. He is heathy as a horse! He said everybody should receive who cannot work 40 hours and they were hired for full time, 40 hours/ week works.
Is it really true?
Answer: You know what???? You, I and probably thousands of people wonder how is it that some people know how to make the system work for them? Your co-worker is probably receiving unemployment benefits because he is only working part-time. A lady that I met a few years ago had a son who worked only part-time, and....I think that was by choice!! He applied for unemployment and guess what?....he got it!!
But your question about who and how can someone receive SSI in FLA....just go to the nearest SS office and get a packet of the necessary paperwork for applying for SSI. Even if you are working part-time!!!
If you are working full-time, I think that might be a problem (factor) in regards to those who will review your application. Other than that, if you are financially strapped due to the barrier your health/disability brings you, then you will most likely get the standard $670 a month.
I'm not sure of the exact amount. I'm going to apply for SSI myself.
Someone told me to apply for both SSI and SSD. I'll see.
Question: How much Supplemental Security Income do i qualify for in NC? I have been apprived to receive SSI but I dont know how much I will be getting yet. Because of my health problems I have not worked enough to qualify for regular disability or for them to determine how much I get from how much I have worked. How do they determine how much I will get if I haven't worked that much in my life? The jobs that I have had in my life only paid me an average of $7 per hour.
Answer: Can't say, but SSI is a Federal program, not state.
Question: How many hours can work if you are on Supplemental Security Income (SSI)? SSI is provided through Social Security. Also I heard that the hours you work when you have SSI are supposed to be limited.
Answer: Talk to your SSI specialist in your area. Your local Adult and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) will have them present and they will be able to tell you. Or go onto the SSI website (ssi.gov). But I think it averages out to be about 20 hours per week (it is a monthly and/or annual total). But check it out. Because I also know that if you work over, and they pay you the same amount, you will have to pay it back at the end of the year.
Question: How likely is my application for supplemental security income be accepted? I have borderline personality disorder. Its very hard for me to find and keep a job. I dont take too kindly to rejection and often lash out. I have an extreme anger problem to boot. I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder earlier this year. And shortly after failing to find a job yet again I decided to apply for ssi. how likely am i to be approved? and how long will it take. I applied at the beginning of july.
Answer: It depends. You have to be unable to engage in substantial gainful activity, and the condition has to be expected to last at least a year. If you're under a doctor's treatment, and they think you're condition will improve to the point you can work within twelve months, then your claim will probably be denied. If you're not under a doctor's care, you need to start seeing one. If they think you're not doing anything to help improve your condition, that reduces your chances of being approved. It's well known that Social Security doesn't approve claims easily. Some people get it first time out, other people end up having to get an attorney. Social Security give an average time of about 120 days for approval or denial. Sometimes it takes longer, and sometimes it's less.
Question: How do elderly people over 65 get Supplemental Security Income? like are there criteria?
Do they automatically get it if they don't have enough money to survive?
or do they have to have a job?
So how do they get it?
Answer: If they have worked for at least 10 years they are eligible for regular SS at the age of 67. If they are physically or mentally disabled they can apply for SSI, if it is approved they will receive a check. There is no age or length of work time for SSI, but you MUST be disabled. And it has to be documented by a doctor or a health care provider.
Question: People on Supplemental Security Income. How many bank accounts do you have? The limit of money a single person on SSI can have combined on bank accounts is $2000 and married $3000. How do you balance your accounts so it wont pass these amounts?
Do they count the value of your car?
Answer: A relative collects ssi. She has 1 account and never has more then 2k in it. Otherwise you lose your benefits. Yes on the car
