Tourette's Syndrome
A treatable neurological disorder that consists of involuntary "tic" movements or vocalizations that become more apparent under stress. Common manifestations include shoulder-shrugging, neck-jerking, facial twitches, coughing, grunting, throat clearing, sniffing, snorting, and barking. Children with Tourette's often have problems with hyperactivity as well.
Question: What do you know about Tourette’s syndrome ?
Answer: My son has been diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome. It is when you have no control over what your body does. You sometimes scream for no reason. He blinks his eyes and stretches his face constantly. You will usually also have adhd and a compulsive disorder. Which my son also has both of these. It is sometimes hard to discover if someone has this. Because when my son's first started, he cleared his throat obsessively. It was so bad that I took him to the doctor thinking he had a soar throat. He was always fine. It wasn't until I found a clinic that specialized in this, that I even knew what was wrong. I hope this helps.
Question: Where can I watch the episode of True Life that featured the people with tourette's syndrome? True life is on MTV and I've allready tried their official website. It was the episode that had that girl with tourette's and those two guys with tourette's?
Answer: Have you looked on MTV.com?
Question: Friend With Tourette's Syndrome How Can I Help???? my friend has tourette's syndrome and it seems to be getting worse. she's getting married in a week and i'm pretty sure her tourette's is getting worse because of the stress. does anyone have any ideas on how to help her calm down and/or help her tics. her tics have gotten very bad to the point that she isn't able to walk very well and they have also become self inflicting. any ideas????
Answer: I have Tourette Syndrome, i know how it feels, ive had it for 10 years now, but only got diagnosed 4 years ago. the best thing to do is to just let her know to not hold her tics back, just to relax, i know, you may think that like itll just make it worse. but when you have tourettes and you know that say, (In my case, i had to get a brain scan for Tourettes and they told you not to move, well my tic is skaking my head. knowing i cant or shouldnt makes the urge only stronger, so they are worse when i let them out because you feel like you need to.) you have to stay still but when you get in your mind that youre not supposed to let out a tic, its only worse. but when you just relax, its a lot easier. then, you know that if you let out a tic, its ok, it doesnt matter. subconsciously, the urge goes away because its not like you are being told you cant do something that your tic relates to. i know it sounds confusing, but just try it. the tics arent so severe nor bad. another thing to do is get her talking or very consumed in something or caught up in it, and itll feel as if she doesnt even have Tourette's. Like when i play hockey, im very into what im doing. i dont even twitch. your brain basically forgets everything for a while and focuses on what is happening, it focuses on only one thing. So your brain forgets to send urges for tics, and even if it does, your mind and body will totally ignore it. I hope ive been of some help. Tell her to just hang in there and that she has Tourette's. Tourette's Doesn't Have Her. And tell her to always remeber that and keep it in her heart. Thanks for your time.
Question: Can suppressing tics help children to outgrow Tourette's Syndrome? ? Children with tourette's syndrome can sometimes suppress their tics. By doing so can this help the child outgrow the disorder? Or by not suppressing the tics, can this help instead?
Answer: No. Tourettes is lifelong and there is not a cure. Some medicines will help to lessen the severity of the tics and vocal tremors, but nothing can take them away.
Take your child to a Pediatric Neurologist for more help and answers.

Question: What is the most unsuitable job for a person with Tourette's syndrome? I'd say children's TV presenter.
Answer: Interpreter
Question: My subconscious has a disgusting tourette's syndrome. How do I stop it? :(? Lately, my subconscious has been popping up random, embarrassing disgusting phrases in my head, some of them decidedly anti-Christian in origin. How do I control it?? or do we not have control over our subconsciouses?
Answer: Don't worry too much about it...I believe your brain is just developing naturally the way it should. Unless it's starting to go "KILL! KILL!" and you physically can't stop yourself from doing so...then you are probably just a normal kid having regular pubescent thoughts. =) No worries.
Question: when does tourette's syndrome /tics start (does it start when young or old)?
Answer: It starts in childhood. In fact, the onset of the disorder must occur before the age of eighteen to be given the diagnosis of Tourette's. And more often than not the onset begins much earlier than that. If someone over the age of eighteen for instance, developes a chronic tic, doctors will look towards other possible conditions for a cause.
Question: Anyone Else Have Tourette's Syndrome? I want to meet a few more people who have tourette's syndome.....so i can share experiences with someone who deals with the same disorder
don't answer unless you have Tourette's Syndrome
Answer: I roll my eyes, crack my neck, extend my arm, clear my throat, grind my gums, squeeze my wrist and twitch my nose. Not at the same time of course. I go through cycles.
Please, if you have it, let's chat.
my aim is ewkatee and msn is [email protected]
I really love meeting people who have it. It makes me feel less of a freak. Everyone asks me "Why do you do that?" I'm tired of it. no one understands.
Question: lexapro for tourette's syndrome? i'm about to take lexapro for OCD.. will it also help lessen my tourette's syndrome/tics? or will it worsen it? does it mean i have to take another drug for my tourette's?
any suggestions while on lexapro? like what to avoid? and what to do most? like exercising? is it more effective to take it in the morning or evening? what is the usual starting dose?
Answer: I took Lexapro for my depression, and I didn't notice any change in my tourettes. They might have lessened a little, but only because I wasn't as stressed, which naturally reduces tics.
Question: I need advice about Tourette's Syndrome!? I have Tourette's Syndrome, I've had it since about 1st grade and just now had a chance to get diagnosed with it. I twitch, grunt, shake my head violently, my head gets 'stuck' while ticking, i flail my arms, i scream sometimes and i make funny faces sometimes. I recently applied for disability because no one will hire me. Burger King even told me that they were concerned that I would hurt myself or drop a lot of stuff. So, I've pretty much exacerbated all of my options. I'm hoping I can get disability until I can find someone that is understanding enough to help me get a good job.
Does anyone have any ideas or tips on how I can really prove to SSA that I have Tourette's and it is legitimate? :(
I already received a proper diagnosis from a doctor that I do indeed have Tourette's Syndrome, ADHD and OCD.
No one will come straight out and tell me that it's because I have Tourette's but I have been harassed before at my last job because of it and it's not even my fault. The only place that 'actually told me' was Burger King, which was kind of ridiculous. I'm at a loss of what to do. I can't afford a Neurologist. I had my just plain ole family doctor diagnose me. She told me she could tell right away that I had it just by looking at me and running a few tests. Is there a form I could get my doctor to fill out?
Answer: Get a referral or a note of authentication by your doctor.
Question: How do you know if your tourette's syndrome will dissapear after adolescance? How can i help it dissapear? I have tourette's syndrome and i think i can live with it (simple motor tics) but i'm afraid it might destroy some of my hopes and dreams in the future.
Is there anything i can do to
-know if it will dissapear?
-help it dissapear?
Answer: NEVER let tourettes take over your life. The only think i found i can't do because of tourettes is be a mime. I have a moderate case and have never let it get in the way of what i want to do in life (I'm only fourteen though). I love to act and am even the only freshmen in my school play. I'm able to hide my tourettes while on stage and just completely explode with my motor tics when i get out of the view of the audience.
But tourettes is a life long disorder. For most people, tics decrease a lot when they get older (they never go away completely). But on some rare occasions, tics don’t decrease. There are some medicines you can take that could decrease tics but the ones I’ve heard of are very ineffective and cause a lot of weight gain. There is also deep brain surgery. But this is only for the people whose tics are so bad to the point where they can’t go to school, feel really embarrassed to go out in public, and have trouble doing things like walking and talking because the tics get in the way. Basically you have to be completely desperate to use surgery because obviously it’s very dangerous.
So I do hope your tics get better. Maybe medicine will help… Good luck accomplishing all your hopes and dreams!
Oh, I just thought of something else. The military might be hard to get into. Like, they wouldn't want to have a person that has tourettes be a someone with a gun just in case of a ticcing finger.
Question: Why does Tourette's Syndrome seem to be seen mostly in children and teens? Do some people grow out of it? For some reason I've been kind of interested in learning about Tourette's Syndrome, but I pretty much just find instances about children and young adults. Is it possible that most people just gain more control of their tics as they grow older or can they grow out of it?
Answer: Yes, people can grow out of it. However, severe cases need to be treated with the help of a professional because of the likelihood of the syndrome causing permanent social anxiety/self esteem issues.
Question: What kind of doctor deals with tourette's syndrome patients? I recently watched this show on TV about tourette's syndrome and now I'm curious about it.
Answer: i saw several doctors and finally got sent to a neurologist.i was 9 when 8 or 9 when the tics started and 15 when i was actually diagnosed as having tourette's by a neurologist.i'm 30 now.
Question: Is it a sin for people with Tourette's Syndrome to commit blasphemy? If people with Tourette's Syndrome commit blashphemy, and can't help it does God count it as a sin?
Answer: It does not count as a sin. A person with TS has no control over what they say and they don't make a conscious decision to commit blasphemy.
Question: Can an Australian with tourette's syndrome join the Australian army? Im an australian citizen and I suffer from mild tourette's syndrome. Barely noticable, and i don't take any drugs for it. I'm fairly fit, I play football and I've got a good social life and I want to join the australian army when i'm older but i'm not sure if i can? Any help?
Answer: Hey! Yet another Thomas! Well, my son I fail to see that your condition would stand in the way of you serving in the Australian Army. Just get on with your application and I'd be surprised if anyone mentioned anything about it. Keep fit and active. Build up your knowledge base and when the time comes you should stroll it. This old Pom is a big admirer of the Aussie Army who supported my country through 2 World Wars at great sacrifice of brave men they couldn't afford to lose. It's a great Army. Well organised and extremely skillful - ask anyone from other nations who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan! Best wishes and good luck with your plans!

Question: What exactly is tourette's syndrome and might I possibly have it? My eyebrows and upper lip twitch a lot, im not sure why yet. I also impulsively move my toes and feet around to the point where the hurt and I really can't stop. Sometimes when im in a really good mood I make this screechy noise and I say things randomly a lot just to hear myself say it because I feel like I need to hear myself or something. Could I possibly have tourettes syndrome, or could it just be my ADD/ADHD?
Thanks for any help!
Answer: I have Tourette syndrome and it doesn’t seem like you have it. First off, is this stuff involuntary? Because with Tourette’s (or just tics) it’s not. You get this urge to do the tic but you can’t prevent it any better than you can prevent a cough or not scratching an itch. When you hold in a tic you get this horrible feeling (it’s NOT like OCD when you think something bad is going to happen). It’s like when you don’t scratch an itch, there’s this horrible feeling that goes through you that makes you scratch it.
So does it feel like that? If not than it could just be a twitch caused by stress. Or it could be part of ADHD. Oh, and there is a difference between tics and ADHD. With ADHD you’re really hyper and do this stuff because of that. But with tics you’ll do it whenever. For me, my tics get worse when I’m really tired.
If it does feel how I describe, than it’s a tic. But tics don’t automatically mean Tourette syndrome. One in a thousand kids have Tourette’s and one in a hundred have tics. So it’s not that really uncommon to have tics.
Two more things, first one, how old are you? If these tics started when you were younger eighteen than tourettes might be a possibility.
Then the second thing, how long has this lasted. If it’s been over a year and started when you were younger than eighteen, there are high chances of Tourette’s. But if it’s been under a year or you’re over eighteen, than it might just be a tic disorder.
Hope I helped.
Question: Could a form of Tourette's Syndrome be causing my 3 year old son to "hump" girls? How is it treated? My son's pediatrician (a man) is referring my son to a behavioral therapist because my son keeps mounting girls on the playground in what can only be called an exagerrated form of Tourette's Syndrome. What sort of therapy would be suitable?
I'm sorry - I meant woman doctor.
I don't knwo why that's even in there - it's irrelevant
but just so you all know....
Answer: perhaps you could train him to hump on command - maybe by saying "Whatcha Gonna Do Wit All That Junk?"
Question: How does TOURETTE'S SYNDROME affect the lives of those who have it? I'm doing a report on tourette's and I don't know anyone who has it, so I'm hoping to get a glimpse on how people who have it are coping with the disability. That way, my classmates would understand the disability more.
Answer: I prefer to call Tourettes a disorder rather than a disability. However, some might consider it to be so. Tourettes is a neurological disorder characterized by tics, which are involuntary movements of the eyes, face, head, neck, or other parts of the body. They can take the form of blinking, sniffing, head bobbing, snorting, grimacing, and other peculiar facial movements and vocal sounds. Most people with Tourettes can lead perfectly normal lives, once their condition is explained to classmates, co-workers, and other people they come in contact with. The tics can be controlled with medication and sometimes with other therapies. There is nothing wrong mentally with Tourettes victims. My oldest grandson has it, and he's 19, an outstanding student, plays the guitar, drives a car, has a part-time job, and the girls are nuts about him. He's handsome and tall. So he blinks and snorts. Most everyone thinks he just has an allergy. It's no big deal. However, some cases might be more noticeable than others. It varies among individuals. For more information, visit some websites that deal with Tourettes. Web MD might be helpful to you. Good luck on the report.
Question: Is Tourette's Syndrome a multifactorial disorder, if not what kind of disorder is it? i am doing a science project on tourettes syndrome and i need to know what kind of disorder it is and i can't find it anywhere, there are 3 different types of disorders and i need to know what kind it is they are multifactorial, chromosome abnormality, and single-gene abnormality.
If you could help me that would be great, and also with your answer could you include the website you got the information from so i can use it in my biography?
Thank You
Answer: Tourettes is a neurological disorder in the brain. People with tourette's have "tics", uncrolable, unvoluntary movements of the body. Tourettes is hereditary, it can be passed down from generation to generation. I have tourettes syndrome. I am 23, and have lived with this disease all my life, and will continue to do so until the day i die. IT'S A NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER IN THE BRAIN!!
