Public Assistance
Benefits granted from State, tribal or Federal programs to aid eligible recipients (eligibility requirements vary between particular programs). Applicants for certain types of public assistance (e.g., Temporary Assistance to Needy Families or TANF) are automatically referred to their State or tribal IV-D agency, which will identify and locate the noncustodial parent, establish paternity, and, where appropriate, obtain child support payments. This allows the State or Tribe to recoup or defray some of its public assistance expenditures with funds from the noncustodial parent and may enable the custodial party to become self-sufficient.
Question: Public Assistance? Do you think the government should make it mandatory for those on public assistance to get healthier foods and not junk foods?
Question 2. Should the government provide vitamins to public assistance recipients?
Would these be ways to get the US poor adults healthier and feeling btter about themselves, hence causing them to better themselves and pushing their way off of welfare?
Answer: We can remove, change, add or subtract the rules on food cards. But the fact is it will still be mis-used and abused, as in drunks letting someone else use their card in exchange for a case of beer or pint of gin...Same with street drugs, etc. Your thoughts are good ones and I would like to see restrictions on junk food and vitamins covered under public assistance.

Question: What documents do I need to get public assistance for my child in North Carolina? I got this girl pregnant and she is trying to get public assistance for my daughter. My name is not on the birth certificate because I don"t know if she is mine. I still provide for the baby but she lives in North Carolina and I live in NY.She is trying to get public assistance for the baby but she says that the office needs a name and social security Number of the father. Is that true? I mean I don"t even know if I'm the father.
Answer: yes they do need that information so they can come after you for child support, welfare goes after the father when a mother files for assistance.
If you do not know if you are the father or not request a DNA test before you get stuck with the bill
Question: what are the long term effects of having public assistance as a college student? I am thinking about getting public assistance, but I wonder what it will do to my credit, why every application asks if you've ever recieved public assistance- is it an advantage or a disadvantage?
Answer: i dont think i have ever came across an CREDIT application that ask me if i ever received public assisance. They ususally ask how much do you make now? They will look at your credit history, did you have bills, credit cards you didn' t pay or were late on?
If you qualify for FAFSA for all means take it. FAFSA may of asked if you received family assistance because that is who they are looking for ,low income families, to give their money too.
Question: why can illegal immigrants receive public assistance when legal permanent residents cannot? My husband is becoming a permanent resident, and part of the process includes signing a sponsor with enough income to support the immigrant. In the forms it says the immigrant is not eligible for welfare, and the sponsor is responsible to financially support the immigrant for the next few years.
I'm not complaining about this rule (since we weren't planning to use public assistance), but why are illegal immigrants somehow receiving food stamps and other benefits? They're also paying state school fees, while my husband paid international tuition (which put us thousands of $$$ in debt). I'm just confused about the favoritism toward illegal immigrants.
Illegal people can't vote, so why is it to the politicians' best interest to promise these things? I'm more liberal myself, but I don't agree with supporting illegal behavior.
Answer: illegal immigrants do not receive public assistance, by this I mean cash aid, food stamps (EPT), Med Cal, and so on.
Just because someone my fit the visual stereo type of an illegal doesn't mean there in the country illegally (many legal forms of entry to)
They however recieve emerancy room care and possibley help from community organization or church...
Question: Is receiving public assistance the same as receiving food stamps? My mom does receive food stamps and on an application it asks if I have received food stamps and public assistance. Should I put that my mom gets food stamps?

Question: Will she have to cancel the public assistance at the moment of applying for her green card? I have a friend that is trying to get her green card, she has 2 kids and she is currently receiving public assistance. will she have to leave the public assistance before applying?
Answer: wow is my reply.........so she is illegal and we have been paying out the butt for her and her brood, and NOW wants to do things right.
Please make sure she tells them that this is all being paid for by the us tax payers money, suppose she wants the fees waived for her actually becoming legal.
sick to death of scroats that always want the easy way, an a LEGAL resident and we had to pay out the butt and my husband had to sign that we could NOT get a dime for any reason...........

Question: i am claiming one dependent. been receiving public assistance for four months, will i still receive fullreturn i had a baby girl in August. I decided to stay home and raise her. I've been receiving food stamps and cash assistance for four months. i am a single mother. since i am not working and receiving public assistance, will that hurt my chances of receiving a full refund?
Answer: It depends on what type of program your on. Food stamps don't alter your return, but receiving cash might. Like the program in my state - you receive cash, but you only can do it for five years (for your entire lifetime) and you have to pay some back. You should be able to contact your worker and they can tell you.
Question: I am receiving public assistance but need child support? I live in Illinois.
My baby was born 2 months ago, unwed. Do I have to get off public assistance to get child support? Can I ask that he get visitation rights?
Answer: no you are still entitled to child support, i am on public assistance and still receive child support. what do you mean by ask if he can get visitation rights, the only he would not be allowed is if you had the Ministry of children and families involved and had a supervision order, or you have sole custody or your baby in which case you would decide on weather or not he can visit
Question: Does public assistance always demand child support from the father? is this true for Illinois
If the mother (custodial parent) goes on public assistance such as food stamps, and the medical card, then PA will also DEMAND child support from the biological father?
If he signed the birth certificate it should be easy to go after him, what about if no one signed the BC is the mother than obligated to give out the information of her child's father in order to obtain public assistance?
if child support is collected from the father does the child support money go to the mother or does it now go back to Public assistance? who gets the check?
Answer: When she files for welfare, she releases any claim on child support, so they file. I assume she wants to double dip like a lot of welfare mothers do. Collect child support in cash while telling Welfare she doesn't know where the father is? And yes, they take it. Hopefully, he will ask for a paternity test as 30% of them comes out negative.

Question: what is considered public assistance in oklahoma? Regarding child support arrears:
I understand that back child support can be payed with the non custodian parents tax returns IF the state is not due debt for public assistance. However, in Oklahoma I think this is fuzzy and I havent found the answer yet.
In public assistance cases, they typically take any child support received to pay off the state debt, but if a person receives child care assistance and food stamps, they can still receive their child support payments. So...if the taxes were garnished, would the custodian parent receive that?
Answer: The custodial parent would receive any monies over the amount owed to the state.~
Question: how might the states be affected if there were no federal control over public assistance programs? how might the states be affected if there were no federal control over public assistance programs and benefits were much better in some states than others?
Answer: Ordinarily, I would say that any money given to any public program should have some oversight. We all know what happened to the bailout money Bush gave the banks and lenders...they gave a lot of it to themselves! However, regarding public education, I wish the feds would butt out and let the teachers teach to subjects, not tests made up by non-teachers. There are too many strings attached to Federal Aid to Education and they make the process much worse...not better! States are closer to the problem and should also return much of the control to the school districts.

Question: can my public assistance case be transferred to another state? I am a single mom currently on public assistance in nyc and i want to relocate to va and i want to know if anyone had a situation like mine where they moved to another state and was still able to get assistance and get help finding housing?
Answer: your public assistance can not be transferred from state to state... Once you have a residence in VA then you have to go through the application process for that state AND before you do that- you must notify your previous state that you have moved to discontinue your benefits so that you are not commiting welfare fraud

Question: If you're on public assistance, How do you feel about it? Many questions here are about public assistance. As someone who's never applied for it, it seems to me that there are generations of people who grow with it and end up on it themselves, and that it a generally abused system. If you're on public assistance, I want to know how you feel about it, ethically speaking. Are you OK with it? Do you feel you deserve it or are entitled to it? Would you rather have a job and support yourself or remain on assistance? Are you taking advantage of the system or do you genuinely need it to survive?
Answer: As a single mother of two, I've always worked for my money. About 7 years ago, I was injured on the job. I receive disability, now, due to numerous back and neck surgeries. I would rather be working. I need a better income to meet the bills I need to pay. I live in low income housing-not my first choice. I hurt everyday. Not just physically, but mentally, knowing I've had limits set on me, has taken a toll on me. I've decided to change that, however. I've started college-at 36 years old-to train to do something that won't be so straining on my back or neck. I hope this works out for me and my sons. Public assistance is needed, but I hate that I need it to survive. I hate losing my independence. I hate my sons seeing me depend on the system to help us live. So, I'm going to show them nothing will keep me or our family down
Question: Do I have to claim taxes on Public Assistance checks? My niece is currently living with me and recieving public assitance. The lease is in my name therefore Public Assistance is sending me the checks so that I can pay half of her rent.Since the checks are in my name do I have to claim taxes at the end of the year for them?
Even though I am using the money to pay the rent?
Answer: Claim taxes? What does that mean?
You are paying half of her rent?
Is Public Assistance is normally taxed in your location?
Oh, I don't know your location!
If you have income you file a tax return, not a tax claim.
Income tax is paid on income, not the use of the income. That you use it for paying rent is not normally a deduction.
I can't help you, I can't figure out what you mean.
Label me: Confused.
