Question: should a store clerk ask your social security number to put on a personal check? I wrote a personal check to a thrif store and the clerk asked for my social security number to put on my check. Is this normal? What action do I need to take to stop any fraud? I just wrote the check yesterday and it is a local store.

Answer: No this is not normal. For a check to be "guaranteed" by a credible check processing company, all that is required is: Full name, Address, Telephone number, Correct date, D/L number, DOB, and and approval code. For them to ask for your SS#, they are requesting information that could quite possibly violate your identity and therefore open themselves up for liability. I would contact theie parent company, request my check back, and offer another method of payment. Checks go through too many hands to risk your identity being sold or stolen.
