Sanctions
A penalty by the court to encourage a party to follow the law. Sanctions are usually designed to fit the circumstances and can be in the form of a money fine or perhaps being forbidden from calling certain witnesses.
Question: What kinds of sanctions are usually employed in international relations? I know theres economic sanctions but are there any other kinds of sanctions ?
Answer: Other than economic sanctions there is closing closing of embassies or reduction in embassy staff or diplomatic demarches.
Question: Will sanctions and diplomacy ultimately work in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power? Almost no one denies that Iran's goal is to become a nuclear power.
Some say it could happen in as little as 3 years. Other experts think it will take more like 10-15 years.
Will diplomatic efforts, and sanctions (if need be) work to stop Iran from reaching this goal?
Answer: No, and threatening to attack them will just make them more determined to protect themselves. They can still remember what it was like under the USA installed Dictator Shah Reza Pahlavi when they had US trained death squads to deal with.
They have also seen unarmed states like Iran and Afghanistan invaded while USA only started to negotiate honestly with North Korea after they detonated a bomb.
Question: How often do economic sanctions work? I need a percentage on how often economic sanctions work.
Best answer goes to the person who did all of these:
1) Answered fast
2) Gives a percentage
3) Has a reliable source
And it would also help if you gave examples of instances of when economic sanctions did/didn't work and why they did/didn't work.
Mostly to second comment: this actually isn't homework.. it's something optional for debate. Wikipedia is an unreliable source and I've already searched Google.
Answer: cool hairstyle
Question: How to free Iran? Why buying oil sanctions on the Iranian government does not? The Iranian people want freedom, but by the Iranian regime are tortured and killed.
The Iranian people under fear of torture and die.
Why do foreign governments we do not escape?
Will America and other governments from "Ahmadinejad" will benefit?
Why buying oil sanctions on the Iranian government does not?
Answer: The question is ..
Do you want to be tortured by the Revolutionary Guards and get to keep your own oil wealth and be able to maintain some degree of national wealth, infrastructure and independence ?
or ..
Do you want to be tortured by the XE and the CIA and give up all your national wealth and oil to subsidise the existence of a few fat Americans, and live in a failed and broken society like Iraq ?
Question: Is the imposition of sanctions on states the best way to end child labour? In the past activists have tried to encourage consumers to boycott companies using child labour by means of negative publicity about the conditions under which children work. The debate is partly, therefore, about whether such action (which may be ignored) is sufficient to force companies themselves to act, or whether it is more effective to use sanctions to pressurise governments into setting up national legal regulations (which might be avoided or repealed). However, there is a second issue: whilst it is normally deemed a truism that child labour is inherently bad, a subtler reasoning is sometimes illuminating. It is hard to see how child labour on family farms can be avoided, when countries do not have the resources to set up schools and to pay families a minimum income. Ultimately child labour ends up more as a question of solving poverty than a simple moral or emotional issue.A model for a sanctions regime would need to take several details into account: both general ones regarding sanctions cases (by whom will sanctions be imposed? And to what extent will they be enforced?) and questions particular to this topic: what age is a ‘child’? Is child labour inherently a issue, or is the debate really about minimum labour standards for any employee?
Answer: I think that child labor is in fact, a bad idea. But only if someone is forcing the children into the labor, and even this is debatable, because the way I phrased my statement, I was saying that simple household chores are out of the question. If the child is willingly participating, then i believe that the work (as it should be called in this case ) is perfectly OK in every way. Upon the subject of the age of the child in question, I think that only people over the age of fifteen should be allowed to perform paid labor, because by this point, most people are mature enough to understand the moral importance of the work-force, and also the necessary part of life that is making your own way in the world.
Question: Three different rounds of sanctions against Iran, why will a forth have a different effect? United Nations Security Council Resolution 1737
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1747
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1803
None of these "sanctions" have had an effect against Iran what so ever in their search for a nuclear weapon.
What is the definition of insanity again?
Answer: They wont have any effect because Iran knows that Obama isnt a threat and China and Russia will water down the sanctions. We should just send a few missles to blow up their nuclear facilities,
Question: What is the difference between divestment from a country and imposting sanctions on a country? Recently, I read an editorial in which the writer said the US should divest from countries that support or do business with other countries or groups that engage in terrorism. The writer said that some in Congress want to do this but business interests and some of our allies quietly lobby against it. How is divestment different from imposing sanctions? Or are they really the same?
Answer: Divestment is getting rid of ownership.
Sanctions is not trading
Say you own stock in Exxon... divesting is getting rid of your stock
Sanctions is not buying gas from them (or selling oil rigs to them)
Question: Princeton grad, care to explain how isolation and economic sanctions will work in Iran? I have asked that question before...since you were the one to admonish people about NOT knowing these simple concepts -isolationism and economic sanctions, could you please elaborate for us all .....how isolation will work in deterring Iran from their evil business?
How economic sanction will prevent them from the same evil thing?
Educate us.
Answer: It won't really, at least not directly. If you impose sanctions on Iran, the common people will suffer. Iran will, and has, clamp down on whatever it has and the rich will get it first. The only hope is that sanctions create conditions for civil unrest to the point where Iran's government has to reconsider its actions.
Question: What would the US do, if the world put sanctions on the country, for illegally invading Iraq? I was just thinking about the sanctions placed on Iran for building a nuclear bomb. I don't agree with it. Who are we to judge. What if the world judged us, and found us guilty of invading Iraq. Shouldn't something be done as well? Do you think the oil prices is some form of sanction/punishment?
Answer: I don't mean to sound full of myself, but the world as a whole wouldn't dare stand up the the U.S. The effects it would have on everyone else would be very negative. I know that a large portion of the world does in fact judge America for invading Iraq. Was it right to invade? I honestly don't know, and that is a debatable question. You could argue that we liberated an entire country from oppression and set up a free society and democracy. No, I don't think there is some vast conspiracy to punish America with high oil prices. There are many logical factors. However, they don't necessarily justify the increase in price that we've seen in the last couple of months. Just my opinion...
Question: What is stopping Oil Rich Gulf States from applying sanctions to the USA and Israel? Hi,
Can someone tell me, what is stopping Saudi Arabia and other oil rich gulf states from applying sanctions in the form of oil exports to the USA & Israel until they comply with UN resolutions?
Surely if such countries applied sanctions, although it could (in theory), especially in this current economic downturn, destroy the USA & Israel financially, it would save many lives in Gaza AND Israel as the ceasfire has now ended.
Oh.. I guess America can use Iraqi oil, they are probably getting that free, so the idea may not work.
Thanks
Answer: have you ever seen anything stamped "Made in Saudi Arabia?" the only thing the produce and export is oil, maybe figs too, i dunno. but to put sanctions on consumers of your only major product is economical suicide.
Question: What do we achieve from international sanctions against a country? <> At the end we may achieve the objective of toppling the leadership of these countries but the cost of such an atrocity is borne by innocent people who may lack basic medical and food facilities.
<> The damage is irreparable and not a single soul would thank the international community in bringing down this government through these measures.
<> People of these economically disadvantaged countries value only the basic needs (clean water, food, medical aid and shelter) and really do not care about the political agenda of their leadership in pursuing nuclear weapons or funding terrorists.
Isn't it bad enough they have to put up with horrible leadership? Why are we punishing them by making their already miserable lives worse by imposing these sanctions?
With all the bright minds and great leaders from around the world we are still reacting to every dam thing - climate change, terrorism, nuclear non-proliferation, economic issues in a knee-jerk manner.
Answer: Typically -t he sanction prevent something even worse from happening.
For example - which would be worse for the Iranian people? Economic sanctions or a nuclear war between them and Israel?
BTW - I notice that for all of the criticisms you have for sanctions, you are seriously deficient in better ideas.
Question: What is the difference between gestures and sanctions? What is the difference between gestures and sanctions?
Answer: Gestures are like the acts, they are very similar to sanctions. Gestures are positive like waving and smiling, negative such as dirty looks or comments, formal such as documents like diplomas and stuff or anything informal, negative or positive, between a group or an individual. Sanctions are the things used to enforce social norms, so we use gestures to enforce sanctions.
Question: If Israel is condemned for both their sanctions and their invasion, how should Israel defend itself? Aren't liberals ALWAYS looking for alternatives to military action?
Isn't sanctions the common default answer to an aggressive neighbor?
Without either one, are liberals intelligent enough to come up with an alternative?
If so, what is it?
Um, but Ollie, Israel did that in 2005, and Hamas kept attacking.
Looks like your idea has already failed.
Answer: Israel isn't defending itself, lately it has been using white phosphorus and claiming otherwise. The innocent people that get hurt from these can't be cured. Israel is aiming at everyone in Gaza.
Al Jazeera interviewed a doctor who have said that there are some injuries which are microscopic and the patient will bleed internally to death, mean while the doctors wouldn't be able to do anything about it.
this kind if injuries can only be caused by chemicals.
Question: Economic sanctions ought not to be used to achieve foreign policy objectives? As the negative side on a Lincoln-Douglas debate, what value and value criterion would you use, and how would you defend economic sanctions?
Answer: In order for economic sanctions to have any effect as a deterrent for would-be rogue behaviors by a nation's leader(s), these sanctions must be done with international support. The principle is one of classical conditioning---a bad result for a wrong choice in behaviors that can be alleviated if the wrong choice in behavior changes to a more positive one. Problems arise if other nations' leaders sympathize with the one enduring economic sanctions to the point of arranging back-door deals that minimize the negative results of these sanctions, as has been the case with Russia and Iran in modern times, although Russia's leaders (Putin and Medvedev) were upset with Iran's recent disclosure of a nuclear site that had gone unreported to the UN as required by international law.
Supposedly, imposed economic hardships for a would-be rogue nation places burdens upon the people of that nation, who then might pressure the nation's leader(s) to change policies. There are other nuances or hoped-for consequences, of course, but this is the main argument when sanctions are imposed. Usually there are negotiation opportunities related to the imposed sanctions, often held at the United Nations or in a neutral location, which allow the misbehaving country's leader(s) to chart a new course (perhaps allow nuclear inspectors on a regular basis) in exchange for a loosening of the restrictions. For many Asian (and sometimes Muslim) countries, the leaders do not like to admit that the sanctions have any effect (to save face), so these leaders, such as Kim Jong IL, like to strut and posture in order to gain leverage at the bargaining table and be taken with more respect. The sanctions imposed are meant to be a peaceful alternative to attacks or war.
Question: How would you negate this? Economic sanctions ought not be used to achieve foreign policy objectives.? I don't know what good points to being for Economic Sanctions would be.
Answer: Socialism is possible only in a state that is united domestically and free internationally. The bourgeoisie and Marxism are responsible for failing to reach both goals, domestic unity and international freedom. No matter how national and social these two forces present themselves, they are the sworn enemies of a socialist national state.
Question: How do sanctions work for Storm8 World War iPhone? I see Sanctions where another player has a dollar amount eg: $8500 next to his name and then there is a button for Attack. Not sure how all this works.
Answer: Not quite sure yet. But I guess I'm happy to not be on that list.

No need to buy fancy units yet. Buy "supply depots" to help build your hourly income. Vault your cash (in spite of the 10% fee) to avoid losing it during battles. Avoid the urge to advance levels too quickly as your military may still be weak. Good luck and see you on the battlefield!
Question: Should the world impose sanctions on the US for human rights abuses and killing civilians in Iraq? Why does the US feel it can get away with war crimes? Would you support sanctions against the US for its violence in Iraq?
Answer: Please list by UN Sanctions for such events as:
Soviet incursion into Afghanistan from 1979-1988 where tens of thousands of Afghan civilians were slaughtered to include the "funny" little toys of booby trapped left for the kids
Chinese annexation of Tibet where thousands of monks have been sent to "reeducation camps" as well as thousands of civilians been relocated.
The re-education camps of the North Vietmanese after the fall of the South?
Sanctions against Muslim countries for public flogging of woman who have been raped?
Sanctions against Serbia for crimes against humanity and the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Kosovo. Or sanctions against Croatia for the same instances
Sanctions against Sudan for the slaughter of people in Darfur - funny the Chinese still do business there for oil.
Before you state "war crime" - you better know the term and meaning. Violence in Iraq - hmmm you better now your facts.
Nevada has 26 per 100,000 people killed through guns while Iraq only has 32 per 100,000. Based on the population of Nevada - only 100 more people need to be shot to death in Nevada to have it match the violence of Iraq
Question: Will Iran yield to sanctions and stop their work towards becoming a nuclear power? Will sanctions and diplomacy work?
Answer: My personal viewpoint is no, more chance of the dinosaurs making a comeback. I don't have a problem with a nation state wanting to produce energy for houses etc like France which btw has near total nuclear power for energy. The problem that has everyone concerned is the weapons part of nuclear. sanctions never work as they only hurt the general population, diplomacy well time will tell, I'm off to pick up some dino food.
Question: After Cuba and North Korea, why would the US think sanctions will work in Iran? Have sanctions EVER worked with radical governments? Seems to me only the citizens suffer, while the radical leaders just stay in power.
Answer: You are right, but Iran is in dire need of all the stuff they import. Since their ONLY export is oil and natural gas they need EVERYTHING else from outside.
When we impose sanctions it makes things tough in the country and encourages people to start objecting to what their government is doing.
It's a cheap way to foment rebellion.
Question: What is the point of US sanctions against Cuba which have not brought democracy to the Island? http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/mar…

If it is about human and political freedoms, why no sanctions against Saudi Arabia?
Answer: I think you know why we don't sanction Saudi Arabia.
