Abortion
Removal of an embryo or fetus from its mother's uterus before it is sufficiently developed to survive. The use of intentionally induced abortions is a common birth control or birth spacing method used around the world. Abortions are usually induced surgically or chemically.
Question: abortion.....? abortion....is it considered killing? or what? what are your thoughts? do you agree on murder of a unborn child? is unethical?
any statistics on getting a disease after an abortion? or dying?
NOTE:
I understand that this a contrevorsial topic, and that these are just opinions. So, please stop with insults and leave your comments to yourself if you arent planning to help out with a simple but complicated question.
Answer: I have thought about this quite a bit over the years. The wide spread of opinions is incredible, matched only by the passion of the activists on all sides. This is an issue that few people are even able to have a civilized discussion about. Complicating it further is that there are few that hold a black-and-white few of the issue. The majority of people in the US see abortion as a giant grey area with varying degrees of abortion considered acceptable. Very few people hold the position of unlimited abortion access or no abortion under any circumstances. Below is the process I went through to come up with my position on the matter.
First, I asked myself the question at what point does a human being obtain "personhood" and as such gain all the legal and moral protections that status entitles them to? There are some who say that the point of personhood is 28 days AFTER birth, at which point you still should be allowed to abort. In fact, there is a professor of ethics at Princeton University that actively advocates this position. This is the position that spurred “Born Alive” legislation that says if a woman has an abortion and the baby survives, that doctors cannot withhold care and let the baby die on the operating table. Others say up to the point of birth. These folks would hold that partial birth abortion is a reasonable procedure. Or perhaps just before while the mother is in labor. Or 6 months of gestation or 3 months or three weeks. I wrestled with this for a long time.
Then I looked at the issue a different way. Does human life have an imputed value or an intrinsic one? If we say that it is imputed, meaning the value is derived from something else, some outside criteria, then any one of the above positions would be equally valid. We as a society would decide what criteria to select. My problem with this is what criteria do you use? On what basis is a baby at 6 weeks more valuable than a baby at 5 weeks? Is a baby that has not yet developed a heart still a baby? This hit really hard on my wife and I when we lost one of our children. Lynne had a miscarriage a few years ago. When people with strong pro-choice sentiments gave us their condolences, they referred to the fetus as a child, even though she (we named her Grace, even though we do not know for sure if she was a she or a he. It made it easier to explain to the children what happened and easier for Lynne and I to grieve our loss) was at the same gestational point, 9 weeks, that they believed abortion was merely removing some unwanted tissue of the mother. So, the criteria used is whether or not a child is wanted. If that is so, then why?
By similar logic, if the value of human life is imputed, it can also be taken away, depending on what some person or group of persons believe that life is worth. So if you happen to be mentally retarded or black or Jewish, it would be perfectly reasonable for you to be killed off for the good of the community if they believe it. I have a friend who is paralyzed from the neck down. There are some in the world who would look at her and say that she has no quality of life or that the money and effort to support her would be better used on others. They would have her die due to her handicap. But knowing her the way I do I find the notion that she is without a quality of life to be ridiculous on its face. She is a writer, a painter, a social worker, and heads up an international charity. I’d call that a pretty good quality of life. So would her husband who married her years after her accident put her in the wheelchair. Thus, the imputed value logic is shown to me to be completely arbitrary. Following any of the “prior to this point it is not human but at this one on it is” positions is likewise arbitrary and does not answer the question of personhood.
But consider the proposition that human life has an intrinsic value. That it is valuable simply because it is human life and no other reason. No measure or quantification of the value of it, it is and that is enough. It is sort of like gold. Gold is valuable because it is gold, not because we as a society stood up one day and said, “we are going to make gold valuable”. Gold has an intrinsic value as opposed to an imputed value, such as paper currency. Paper currency is worthless in and of itself. It has value only because we say it has a certain value.
This position then would support a clear line between human life and not human life. With this position, you are a human at the point that you have a unique genetic code. In other words, at inception. Prior to inception, there was no “you”. The male and female reproductive components in and of themselves are not a unique genetic code, but merely parts of the donors. It is only when they combine to create new life do “you” begin to be a person.
The notion of intrinsic value also carries forward throughout life. My mother-in-law was on dialysis for several months before diabetes finally took her life. There are many who would have said that she should just die and not burden the rest of us. If those persons held the position that human life has imputed value, I can understand. I however, believe that human life is intrinsically valuable and worth preserving and protecting for as long as possible. Thus, we should protect life at the beginning and at the end and at all points in between.
So, we come full circle back to the question of abortion. Should it be outlawed? My answer, since I believe in the intrinsic value of human life, is that for the most part it should. Why only “for the most part”? Because there are times when you have to weigh the life of two humans and pick one to live and one to die. My sister-in-law faced such a problem once. She got pregnant from her husband and it turned out to be a tubal pregnancy. Had the child been allowed to grow inside of her, it would have killed her before the baby would have been able to survive on its own. Thus, in weighing these two lives, one would have to conclude that the baby would have to die in order to save the mother’s life. What about cases of rape or incest? I have 5 daughters (yes, that was no typo) and the thought of one of them being raped is always lurking in the back of my mind. If one of them should get pregnant as a result, the hard decision would be to let that child live. Pregnancy is not the extremely dangerous event of the past. Rarely do people die from giving birth. Many more die as a result of complications after an abortion. But the bottom line is that the child is innocent of any crime, so why punish it? I’m not saying it is an easy choice and I can certainly sympathize with those who have had to make it. Perhaps they even made the wrong choice. But, God is a loving and forgiving God, who can even forgive the taking of a human life. Which is what abortion is.
Question: Abortion?? What are your thoughts on Abortion?
Is it murder?
But under the right circumstances could it be right?
Are the permanent scars really worth it?
I am really interested in hearing other peoples point of views on this one.
I am writing a paper on abortion and I'd love to hear what you think.
Thanks.
(: Missy.
Answer: Abortion should be only between the woman, her doctor, and her god.
Question: ABORTiON!!!??? Do you think partial birth abortion is right? It is the killing of an already formed baby, not the same as a regular abortion but much crueler in fact murder really, the baby is about ready to come out and they just kill it. I personally dont agree with any form of abortion but partial birth abortion really is disgusting and is just as much murder as someone walking down the street and shooting someone in the head. In fact if any of you are hilary clinton fans, she has approved this in the past. If any of you agree with this please back up your answer.
Answer: Late-term abortions are only performed in the most critical situations (and partial birth abortions have already been outlawed,so your indignance is really misplaced). People make it sound as though they are routinely performed in the eight month of pregnancy because the mother changed her mind, but that is not the case at all.
Read this heartwrenching story about a couple who was faced with having to undergo a late-term abortion and see if you still feel the same way:

Question: ABORTION.........................? When debating against abortion, what argument could you use when the opponent says illegal abortion rates will just increase and create unsafe conditions?
Answer: Agree with their first point about illegal abortion rates increasing, since if abortion was illegal then ALL abortions would be illegal. If you made something illegal that is currently mostly legal, of course the number of illegal cases of it is going to increase!
You could then say something about it shouldn't be legal just to make things safer for the women. You could make a comparison with drugs. It'd be like saying we should legalise drugs to make it safer for the drug users (it would, as then drugs would be regulated).
Question: ABORTIOn!!!? I dont believ in abortion. i figure if u wanna go out n have sex then thats ur risk of being pregnant. but im trying to get my point out that its horrible.. and i know some people are probally liek ohh shut up its not a baby.. blah blah.. but i feel alot different about it.. it is a baby even from the begining..

i jus dont think its okay to kill a baby bc u had sex n got pregnant.. rape n medical problems would be different..
Answer: I think it is around 5 months. It is crazy how far you can go and abort.

Question: My family is against abortion and i am considering getting one what to do? I am planning on making an appointment for an abortion but my family is against abortion. I was going to get the abortion and tell my family i had a miscourage. However, my sister is a sergical tech and is very familiar with hospitals and the things that go on and being she knows so much pertaining to medical things i think she will know i got an abortion.
Answer: Hello,
I just want to share with you what the effects of having an abortion are, and what can truly happen. I know, as I have had one. I regret this decision more than anything, and I wish I could go back and undo it. I didn't listen to my heart, and or what I wanted to do. I let others influence me, and my choice. I want to tell you, please consider all of the aspects before you commit to doing this.
I never thought I would regret it, and or that it would affect my life. It did and still does to this very day. I just recently had to seek help for it, as I couldn't deal with it anymore. I didn't realize why my life had kept on turning to a downward spiral for 6 years. I know now it was because of my abortion.
I went into a deep hidden depression. I became angry, bitter, hateful, sad, ashamed, embarassed etc. I literally almost died because of my actions. I truly went through a rough time. And I am still to this day struggling to forgive myself. Abortion to me, won't fix anything or take anything away, it will only make things worse, and when I say worse, I truly mean worse. Do not by any means let anyone influence you or your decision. Whatever you choose to do, it has to be soley up to you.
I had people tell me that it was nothing but a bunch of cells. Well, that's not true, it is indeed a child, and it is real. I have done numerous researches on this, and finally learned the truth. The earlier you do it, does not mean the better!
I wish that I could go back and undo what I did. It is truly a regret, and it did not help me or my life. It destroyed me. No matter how angry, upset, irritated people act, or say around you, the decision has to be yours and yours alone. I'm sorry to say that, but it's true. If you and your husband for whatever reason don't want another child, maybe you could consider the option of adoption. That's what I wanted, but my bf at the time left me no choice. He wasn't for adoption and we were in no place to raise a baby, and I tried to go for adoption, and in the end, I let others infuence me, and I hate myself for it. You can't listen to other people. You have to follow your heart.
I am not going to tell you what to do one way or the other, I am just trying to let you know what happens on the other side. Please take the time and consider these things. Abortion is real, and the group I'm in for help, we've all had abortions and every one of us regrets our decisions.
My guilt and that didn't come out to a head until years later, and the turmoil hell that I went through, well, lets just say I could have prevented it. I wish more than anything I could have given my baby up for adoption. And that talk about it just being a bunch of cells, no! Don't believe that. Ask any doctor. It's not true. The baby's do feel pain, and my baby had a heart beat when he or she passed. I didn't know, and I am deeply angry for being uneducated.
Just thought I'd share, I'd hate to see another woman go through what I have been through. It's not worth it. I live sure, but my life will never be the same, and I will never forget my baby!
Question: How is the abortion process carried out on someone that is 19 weeks pregnant ? I have heard that the way an abortion is done depends on how far pregnant you are.
For example, the abortion process on someone that is 8 weeks pregnant would be completely different to a one on someone this 18 weeks pregnant.
I also heard that if you want an abortion after you are 24 weeks pregnant, you have to pay a lot of money to get it done.
How long does it take ? Do you have to stay in a hospital ? Does it hurt like giving birth does ?
Answer: I had an abortion at 6-7 weeks (my doc told me there was no chance to keep the child). They gave me a shot and I fell asleep, after 15 minutes - woke up. No pains, no post-abortion problems.
I think it depends on the organism a lot. Anyway, mini-abortions done by good docs are not painful. Cannot tell anything about "bigger" ones...
Question: What punishment should a woman receive for having an illegal abortion? Should abortion be outlawed?
If the procedure is outlawed should women who continue to have abortions be punished?
How should women who have illegal abortions be punished?
If women are not to be punished for illegal abortions how are they not responsible for allowing the abortion to be performed on their bodies?
If you are going to answer "abortions are legal" True but not an answer to the questions being asked then try to answer this: If abortion is to remain legal what is the most compelling and valid argument for doing so you can think of?
David K, Islam Is Wrong 4UK, Justice, Joyann, Emarrrro, and Divine Oubliette thank you for answering in a way that indicated you read the questions and were responding to what was being asked. I wish I could give all of you extra points although one of you will likely get 10 points for best answer..
Stephen: I agree with you but I would have preferred if you gave a reason besides your assertion why you believe it.
CIA: the question applies to all women not just those receiving public assistance.
the rest of the answers I just don't take seriously.
Deb: good answer as well
Answer: Making it illegal is a great idea - it's been working out so well for other countries . . . .
Legal basis for Philippine abortion ban
The act is criminalized by the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines, which was enacted in 1930 and remains in effect today. Articles 256, 258 and 259 of the Code mandate imprisonment for the woman who undergoes the abortion, as well as for any person who assists in the procedure, even if they be the woman's parents, a physician or midwife. Article 258 further imposes a higher prison term on the woman or her parents if the abortion is undertaken "in order to conceal [the woman's] dishonor".
*Funny that making it illegal doesn't stop women.
Abortion practices in the Philippines
One study estimated that, despite legal restrictions, in 1994 there were 400,000 abortions performed illegally in the Philippines and 80,000 hospitalizations of women for abortion-related complications. 12% of all maternal deaths in 1994 were due to unsafe abortion according to the Department of Health of the Philippines. Two-thirds of Filipino women who have abortions attempt to self-induce or seek solutions from those who practice folk medicine. [3]

*It just endangers women's lives making aboriton illegal.

Abortion: There is a Consensus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsSQiazUv…
EDIT - The constitutional right to choose abortion was a limited one. In the first trimester, the state had no power to restrict abortion; beginning with the second trimester, the state might regulate, but not prohibit, abortion; and in the third trimester, the state might prohibit abortion except when necessary for the mother's life or health.

Besides there will always be wise women who do not need clinics to induce a miscarriage.
Murder is a legal definition, and murder requires that the death involve an individual with legal 'personhood.' Fetuses and embryos do not have legal 'personhood.' (If they did, every miscarriage would be counted in mortality rates, (and would have to be investigated legally by the coroner as an 'unexpected death') and every fetus would be counted in the census.)
Some of us believe that, for some people, in some situations, abortion is the better of two bad options. It's not a "good thing" but sometimes it's the better choice for the person most immediately involved ... the pregnant woman.
Basically murder is a legal term, not a moral term.
Question: If abortion is made Illegal, what should happen to women who then have abortions? Should they also be put to death or given life in prison? If you believe that abortion is murder, then how can they be punished any differently than how society punished murderers now?
If you don't punish them at all, then why even make it illegal?
Answer: First of all, abortion should not be made illegal for many reasons, but pertaining to your question, you are correctly assuming that women will find a way to have abortions. These abortions may be done by back ally butchers with coat hangers, like they were in the past. If this happens, we needn't worry about punishing these women, they will probably die from infection or complication from the procedure.
Question: If abortion is legal, then how come countries that allow it consider killing a fetus a murder ? If abortion is legal then we should assume that fetus is not a human. But in countries like Canada killing a pregnant woman is two murders while abortion in any time of pregnancy is not a murder, how come ?
The contest of the woman, being legal, and the medical procedure is not excuse neither a difference. So it is either both are murder or both are NOT.
Right ?
Marc, perhaps you are too id**t to understand the question and put the answer "Not"
mnwomen you are a muppet, really ! Fetus is either human or not a human. If it is human then contesting to terminate the fetus life does NOT mean it is NOT murder.
If it is NOT human then killing it is NOT a murder.
No difference between the two situation, perhaps there is a difference only in your narrow and stupid imagination.
Billy, did you read something in my question implies that "Killing pregnant woman is not murder" ? It is a murder. But if abortion is allowed then killing a pregnant woman is murder to one person NOT two.
Answer: Under Canadian law, a foetus is not a person until it is born. Thus abortion is not murder in the eye of the law. As for killing a pregnant women being considered two counts of murder, that legislation was never passed.
Question: after an abortion how long before you can start the depo provera shot for birth control? After you have an abortion (by the abortion pill) how long do you have to wait before you can start the depo provera birth control method?
How soon into a pregnancy can you abort with the pill?
How soon can you take a pregnancy test?
Answer: The world is changing and crisis grips the nations: economic uncertainty, wars, the threat of terrorism... where can we find hope in these uncertain times? As distressing as it seems, there is a crisis even more urgent: the fact that death awaits us all. When we die, we will all stand before the Judge of the Universe. How will you do?
Ever lied, stolen, or looked with lust? Ever taken God's name in vain or failed to put Him first? If you have broken even one of these laws, God sees you as a lawbreaker. Picture yourself in a courtroom guilty of many serious crimes. The Judge's sentence is: A million dollar fine, or life in prison. You are unable to pay the fine, so the guard begins to lead you away. Suddenly, someone you don't even know steps in and pays your fine in full. That means you are free to go! That is what Jesus did for you 2000 years ago. He took your punishment upon himself by taking God's wrath on the cross. Then he rose from the grave, defeating death.
Repent (turn from sin) and put your trust in Jesus Christ to save you. God will grant you eternal life. Don't wait until tomorrow... You may not have another day.
Question: If abortion was made to be both unnecessary and undesirable would legality matter? If you oppose abortion on moral grounds, then legality is the least of your concerns. We should fight to make it so no one ever chooses to have an abortion or provide one, before legal issues are dealt with. Do 'pro-choice' people support abortion itself, or would they be happy with 'choice' if no one ever had an abortion, legal or otherwise?
Answer: I find abortion to already be undesirable, It is the ultimate act of selfishness 99.9% of the time. With all the options out there, It already is, for the most part, unnecessary. Even for those who do not believe in God, how can you justify your own life if you are willing to deny life to another (already conceived)? The fact that it is legal to end the life of your unborn child is a slap in the face to humanity.
Question: Why would the Abortion rights people be upset over the Executive Order regarding abortion? If there was no funding for abortion in the bill, and the Hyde Amendment would pass, why would the NOW folks and the Pro-Choice people in the House be upset that the President is planning on reinforcing it with an Executive Order?
Unless....
Answer: The rich always have and always will be able to get quality medical care, including abortions, in all cases. It's always the poor they discriminate against.

Question: What type of abortion should my girlfriend get? My girlfriend is 6 months prego and finally decided to get an abortion. Should she go with a state-funded abortion or one at a private clinic? Obiviously, the state-funded one would make more fiscal sense, but we want to make sure that it's safe and that they get all of it.
Answer: Look, I am very for abortion but this is SIX MONTHS! They could probably induce her now and the child would survive. Please, give the child up, you really have nothing to gain from killing it at this point. You could have done it sooner, why did you not? Please- my dad is adopted and he is very grateful because someone like you chose to let him live. Like I said, I believe very much in abortion, but please reconsider.
Question: How soon after abortion can you get pregnant? My sister had a medical abortion when she was 5 weeks pregnant. She started using birth control pills one week after the abortion. Two weeks after the abortion she had sex. She took plan B about 60 hours after. It's been a month since the abortion (4 weeks exactly) and she hasn't gotten her period? She bled lightly for a few hours, but that's it. Could she be pregnant? How soon after a medical abortion do HCG levels disappear?
Answer: Yes she could. Why not use a condom until after the BC has totally kicked in?
As far as the HCG:
"How long it takes for you the HCG levels to reside depends on at what point in the pregnancy you had the termination, HCG levels are higher at certain points, and so therefore would take longer to come back down. 6-12 weeks are times of high HCG.
your fertility is very high immediately following an abortion, however, if you have been very careful, you are probably fine.
also, HCG levels can take longer to come down if tissue was left behind during the procedure...if this was the case you would develop symptoms of infection such as a fever, cold sweats, fatigue, abdominal pain, etc.. and should see your doc right away.
additionally, if you are really concerned, your doc can draw a blood serum test and see what exactly the HCG levels are and probably tell if they are lingering from the previous pregnancy or you are preg. again. if they suspect you are preg. they can do an ultrasound, which im sure u already know."
"It depends on how far along you were when you had the abortion. If the abortion was at 8-10 weeks when the HCG level may be as high as 150,000 mIU, then 2 weeks after the abortion the HCG level may be as high as 1,500 mIU. High enough that sensitive HCG tests will remain positive for a long as 40 days after a first trimester abortion. After a full-term delivery the level will have dropped to less than 50 mIU within 2 weeks and undetectable within 3-4 weeks."
Question: Is abortion a important topic to you when voting for president? I take into consideration many things when voting. Especially my beliefs, morals and financial state.
If it questions my morals, it puts me into check.
I can make a better decision.
Obama is for abortion, apparently 3rd trimester??? From what I understand. I am Catholic and highly against it. I voted for McCain due to that factor.
What do you think?
Answer: I think the President doesn't have as much say in the matter as people think, but I do believe in personal freedom, and that is a sort of touchstone issue.
If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one.
Question: What are the religious ramifications if abortion is an effective way to prevent crime? The author Steve Levitt has written that since the judgment of Roe vs Wade ( effectively legalizing abortion ) crime has decreased. In five States that introduced legal abortion three years prior to Roe vs Wade the crime rate decreased three years earlier than the national average.
If legal abortion is an effective crime controller can it be resolved with the religious community?
Or would the religious community be willing to take on the burden and responsibility of the unwanted children and subsequent criminal element in society, for example pay and police the extra prisons and parole offices?
Answer: Actually, those of you arguing that this isn't possibly true (@God's Army) are completely wrong. I know its not what you want to hear, and its not a pro-abortion argument, it is supported by defended research. Research indicates that crime rates have decreased since abortions have become legal. Researchers attribute this to unwanted children (who's subsequent home life aids in the formation of criminal behavior). However, it is not clear if this correlation is spurious or not. To answer the asker's question, religious communities would never have the resources, ability, or dedication to be able to be successful at having similar results if there were not legal abortions.
Question: How much money do you give to abortion-rights groups each year? I try to give around $5,000 per year to organizations that give women in states like Mississippi free transport and lodging and abortions, since it can be tough for them to travel to the nearest abortion facility.
That amount of money pays all the expenses of about 5 women per year. It's not a huge number, but it certainly does help.
How much money do YOU give to abortion rights groups each year?
Answer: That is great! I don't give any money since I'm currently my own charity case, but I hope to donate as I can in the future.
