Gender
Sexual identity as male or female.
Question: gender...? i know that im not going to be having children for at least 10 years, but i was wondering if there is (or will be) a scientific method of choosing the gender of your child? because everyone in my family has only and continuously had girls, and i want to have a boy. i know this is a long time from now, but i was wondering..
thanks in advance.
Answer: there is a ..sex selection..available. people magazine did a article on it a few years back. it is ..EXPENSIVE .. and they still will not guarantee you a 100 % rate of success. they separate the x sperm from the y sperm the best they can and do an in-vitro on the woman. hope this helps.
Question: How important do you think gender-collaborative research is needed? ..In social Science?
There is growing real awareness about the importance of social men's issues. This project was done between male and female academics.
"The European Research Network on Men in Europe comprises women and men researchers who are researching on men in an explicitly gendered way. The bringing together of women and men researchers is extremely important, necessary and timely in the development of research on men in Europe. Research on men that draws only on the work of men is likely to neglect the very important research that has been and is being made by women to research on men. As such, research and networking based on only men researchers is likely to reproduce some of the existing gender inequalities of research and policy development. In contrast, gender-collaborative research is necessary in the pursuit of gender equality, in the combating of gender discrimination, and in the achievement of equality and in the fight against discrimination more generally"...
"For a very long time, men, masculinity and men’s powers and practices were generally taken-for-granted. Gender was largely seen as a matter of and for women. Men were generally seen as ungendered, as ‘just like that’, natural or naturalised – not only in everyday life and in politics, but also in academia. This is now less the case than even ten years ago. There has been a gradually growing realisation that men and masculinities are just as gendered as are women and femininities. It is now clear that ‘gender’ and ‘gender relations’ are about both women and men. This gendering of men is both a matter of changing academic and political analyses of men in society, and contemporary changes in the form of men’s own lives and men's experiences and perceptions, sometimes developing counter to their earlier expectations and the experiences of recent generations of other men".

Thoughts?
Hi Ruper, so many questions! ;-)
This is their site, which describes much better their policies, resources, methodologies, aim and Universities involved in the project:

Answer: Historically, the entire field of psychology was based on findings using only white men of moderate to good health. The "fathers" of psych were of that same population -- Freud, Jung, Adler, etc. Women were studied, yes, but not in terms of how their symptoms compared to men, but in how they compared only to other women, whose diagnosis most frequently were prefaced by "hysterical__________" and that term colored any and all research that could have ever been of value. Because of the feminist movement and also because of the progress made within the field itself, the pendulum type backlash, particularly in the 80's and 90's, was for the field to concentrate almost exclusively on women. Experiments and studies used female only sample populations, a plethora of female theorists were finally taken seriously and gained credibility in the field. There were also theorists like self proclaimed neo-Freudian Karen Horney who postulated the Electra complex in direct answer to Freud's Oedipus complex. Her theory was absolute rubbish and only served as a pitiable example of a rabid feminist (which I define differently than 98% of the people who use this board) who wanted to further women's causes at any cost, even if the vehicle for doing so was not valid. The war cry for this evolution in psychology was essentially "Men had their moment in the sun, it' our turn now!" which, as a woman, yes I understand I guess. Men were the end all and be all in terms of psych and a whole half of the human population had been ignored for decades. However, as a scientist, I was despaired because we were now perpetuating the same exclusion that we claimed to be railing against. If a study sample involved white men between 25 and 40, it wouldn't get funding, the ehtics of the team and specifically the scientist would be called into question, it was ridiculous.
I think gender specific research has intrinsic value. When you look at something like human behavior, the scientist must take into account and theorize for every conceivable variable (age, height, gender, race, country of origin etc). It makes sense to exclusively study men, and also exclusively study women--the two can later be compared for differences between the genders and also commonalities among the gender. Every scientist worth their salt knows that group specific study is inherently valuable and the intention is not to further divide the genders, but to better understand each and what they have in common. You must understand each as a seperate group before you can compare and look for common ground. Differences are easier to spot, and once they are found and documented, the 'sameness' begins to take shape.
Question: What gender automatically comes to mind when you hear these unisex names? I'm not asking which gender you prefer it on, just if you automatically think the child is a boy or girl upon hearing the name. Thanks!
Adrian
Courtney
Cassidy
Jordan
Alex (as a nn)
Bailey
Mackenzie
Aydan (pronounced EYE-Dan)
Riley
Reese
Hayden
Brett
Blake
Ryan
Logan
*I have seen all of these on both genders that's why I'm asking.
Answer: I love these questions; they're so controversial! It's interesting to see everyone's opinion, as obviously, not everyone is from the United States, where I live. So, below are my opinions:
Adrian -- BOY, especially spelled this way. Adrienne is the female version, and I think it's actually really a beautiful name, though I slightly prefer Adriana. I must admit, Adrian is one of those few names where if I heard it and didn't see it spelled, I genuinely would not know to expect a boy or girl.
Courtney -- GIRL, all the way. I've never known a boy with this name.
Cassidy -- GIRL, although I believe it originated as a boy's name. It's kind of like Aubrey, in that I think I'd expect to see it on a girl, but wouldn't be all that surprised to see it on a boy.
Jordan -- BOY, and this is another example like Adrian. When I hear Jordan, I do not know whether to expect a boy or a girl, since I've met boys and girls named Jordan. One of the guys I dated in college was named Jordan, which is why I ultimately see it as a boy's name. But truly, in my opinion, it is a unisex name.
Alex -- GIRL, only because Alexandra has been a favorite of mine forever.
Bailey -- GIRL, I've only ever known girls with the name Bailey! And occasionally a few dogs and cats, but never a boy.
Mackenzie -- GIRL, though I believe it's popular for boys "across the pond" in Europe.
Aydan -- GIRL, though I would see it going either way. The "eye" reminds me of Isla, a very feminine and gorgeous name.
Riley -- BOY, but just barely. This is the same category for me as Jordan and Adrian.
Reese -- GIRL, and I'd assume it was short for Teresa. The boy's name is spelled Rhys I believe.
Hayden -- GIRL, but again just barely.
Brett -- BOY, completely!
Blake -- BOY.
Ryan -- BOY! It's one of my favorite names for a boy.
Logan -- BOY, but I've actually met girls with this name. And actually, the first thing I think of when I hear Logan is the city in Utah. :]
Question: What gender is usually said to be having when you have really bad morning sickness? I've heard an old wives tale that if your really sick, your having a specific gender, but I can't remember what gender it is.
Answer: If you have bad morning sickness its supposedly a girl. True in my case. Pregnancy with my son was much easier! I didn't get morning sickness at all with him.
However it is an old wive's tale and no way to know for sure if its true or not so don't get your hopes up hun.
Question: Which gender would be better when adopting a puppy with a house that already has a dog? I have a 5 month old English Bulldog puppy who will be getting neutered in two weeks. He knows basic commands, is housebroken, and a very good boy. My husband and I want to add another bulldog, but we don't know what gender to get. Zorro (my dog) loves other dogs and likes to jump and play with the males, but play calmly with females. Which gender would be better?
Answer: Either would work if you are a strong pack leader. Be sure to spay or neuter your new dog and socialize them both really well. Don't get a new dog before your current dog is neutered. If he's better with females, get a female.
Question: Is a gender neutral baby gift appropriate as a Christmas gift for a couple expecting their third child? My boyfriend's friend and his wife are expecting their third child. They already have two boys ages three and one. I thought since they are being so kind to let me stay with them and my boyfriend for three weeks, I'd get them something for Christmas.
I don't know the gender of the baby, so would a gender neutral baby gift be appropriate for their Christmas gift?
I have no idea what that will be. Suggestions are appreciated!
Answer: Of course! I'd be terrible to give them something feminine when it turns out to be a boy!
Oh, I guess you mean to get them "a baby gift?" :) Yes, I'm sure the parents would love it. What woman DOESN'T like getting baby things(especially a pregnant woman)? Plus, I'm sure it will be very useful to them as well.
I'd be interested to know what you were getting them(not that it matters too much I guess).
ETA: clothes, bottles, pacifiers, blankets, booties, rattles, teddy bears, bibs, new born mittens, onesies(sp?), etc. What all I suggested in my other answer. I wasn't sure if you knew what a diaper cake was. I didn't ever see one myself until about a year ago. It's a shame you couldn't bring that.
Or, you could get something little for the 2 little kids? Something distinctly American and/or of the state you're living in. Maybe a Christmas ornament - "for the ..... Family" or "Merry Christmas from Montana" or wherever it is you're from. Just an idea...
Question: How to tell gender of tropical angelfish? Okay, there are two opinions, some people say it is impossible to tell except during breeding and one group says you can tell, that if they have a bump/dent on their forhead. Can or can you not tell the gender. Please help because I am planning to get a second one that is the same gender. I don't have time to care for eggs.
Answer: it is very hard to tell except when breeding. don't worry about getting eggs you don't want they will get eaten by other fish.
Question: What is the meaning of gender studies and what does gender studies study about? What are the concepts that can be considered in gender studies? What are the concepts in gender studies that can be considered relevant and important in this 21st century?
Answer: Good question. Although I'm no expert, I believe gender studies is the study of each gender, their characteristics, and their social roles.
Question: How can I have different gender twins/triplets on sims 3? I heard they took out the watermelon/apple thing to determine gender so now I am unsure of how to have different gender twins and triplets. Is there a cheat? Or do I have to do certain tasks? Please help, I've tried so many times and I still get the same gender.
Answer: I'm not sure about three but if you play 2 it depends what you eat at what time. There's cheat sites all over the internet for this type of thing. Also if you force twins via the cheat 'force twins' I think it gives you the opposite sex of the baby you already had. You have to do this cheat right when she goes into labour.
Question: How can you link gender issues or stratification in the workplace to the social-conflict analysis? Should I use the term gender issues or stratification in regards to these information: I need to research the fields in which male dominates and the ones that females dominate. and also, I need to explain how society's view on sex roles (the roles that males and females play in society) dictates the job that they pursue and work at.
Social Conflict Analysis views gender as a dimension of social inequality and conflict.
Answer: By clarifying the language perhaps you could produce a more understandable question. Gender alone is one issue where contradictions exist and in the workplace manifests as male dominant sometimes and female dominant other times. The stratification in the workplace is another where contradictions exist and stratification is a solution in that it resolves contradictions that gave in to no other solutions.
Question: What are some reasons repliers judge my gender to be one over another? Does masculinity and feminity manifest thoughts and words any differently? I am curious to know why people assume I am of a certain gender (wrong gender)?
Could it be that the way I write doesn't stereotypically sound like one gender over another? More than several times now, I've had repliers conclude wrongly--that I am a man and old man at that!
Answer: well that proofs every one basis their opinions on what they see,
since you avatar does not show that you are male or female,it causes some misunderstandings. When i answer a question yes i do look at the avatar, but if there is no picture there then i try to understand the question and answer accordingly, some times i do goof around.
the more you show what exactly bothers you the more people will try to hurt you. the (unknown).
so i think you have two choices either you take the answers and get what ever you need out of it.
Or just tell yourself say what!! it should not bother you at all.
some of us are here to just make fun of others, some of us
are here cause we are lonely
do not have anything else to do, some of us are here only for the scores that we get. and they are some who really want to help others.
So my friend, do not take everything so seriously .it should not bother you how or why they think about you this way or that way.
life is to short.
take care
Question: How can you tell which gender a lovebird is? We have a lovebird who's mate passed on about a year-year 1/2 ago and we have decided to start searching for a new mate. The problem is, we don't know what gender our bird is. So is there a way to confirm a lovebird's gender without taking it to a professional?
Answer: There is no way you can tell the gender of lovebird on their physical appearance except whether they lay egg(female) or not then is a male. And also getting one to add in existing one is not easy cos the existing bird is territorial of the cage and fight with the new bird. So you have to separate them first. Or move to a new place for the cage so they both has a new environment and cage, sometimes may or may not work.
Good luck
Question: What is the difference between gender being socially influenced and it being a biological result? I have been researching about gender: nature vs. nurture. I understand a little about the difference between each but am still a little confused. I would also like to know if gender being genetic fall under it being biological result?
Answer: First of all I have given much thought to this being straight and trying to understand the alternative. Gene's dictate your biological sex. I personally think that your brian dictates what you will turn out to be. I have heard that even though genetics tells you what you are biological your brain maybe already hardwired a certain way. hope this helps.
Question: Do single gender fruits have mixed gender seeds in the same fruit? I thought I might try growing kiwi vines but I don't know if I would get fruit on it because they are single gender plants. So, are the seeds in one fruit all the same gender, or are they mixed?
Thanks Hondu, I'll do that.
Answer: There are both in each fruit. Plant several seeds because you can't tell the difference in the new plants until they bloom. The female blossom has heavy white styles and the male has slender stamens with yellow or orange pollen sacs. One male plant can pollinate up to eight or nine females.
Question: Why is the study of gender discrimination in the workplace important? Why is it important to study Gender Discrimination in the workplace? What could this study contribute to? What are the benefits of knowing the causes of Gender Discrimination?
Answer: It can contribute to equality in the workplace and ensure the same opportunities for people of equal experience regardless of gender. The benefits of knowing the cause is that once the causes are found a resolution can be made to make the workplace better and fairer to everyone.
Question: How do you find the gender in Red Canaries or just Canaries in general? Hi, I need to know how to find the genders for Red Canaries. Also I would like to know how to find the gender for any typical canary. Thanks so much!
Answer: Unfortunately, it's extremely difficult to sex canaries by sight. Canaries need to be sexed by song rather than sight. Male canaries will sing beautifully and strongly. Most females don't sing, however, there are few hens that may sing, but they don't sing as well as the males. Their singing is very weak.
You can read this link about sexing canaries for more information:

Question: How can you tell what gender a parakeet is without getting it professionally checked? I just got two parakeets and all is well but i really wanna know what their gender is. When I first when to the pet store the lady said in a few months I have to take it to the vet and ask a pro but the second time a went a couple hours later a different guy guessed on what it would be so I think there might be a way to tell. Does anyone one know how to tell the gender??
Answer: ya i myself have 16 parakeets. you have to look at the colors of their ceres (noses!). females have beige or brown ceres. males have pink, purple, or blue nosies, depending on what type of parakeet they are. but girls always have tannish ceres.
p.s. if they are babies they will only have white colored ones. congrats on the new birds!
Question: How do you find correlation between gender and hours spent studying and subject area and time spent studying? For my coursework, I have to find out how many hours students at uni study in the uni library. I've collected the data but now I have to find if there is correlation between gender and hrs spent studying, and between subject area and hours spent studying. I have no idea how to do this because gender and subject aren't numbers so how do I find the correlation.
Somebody please help
Thanks :)
Answer: As a short guess could you plot a graph using that data, then you can see if it has strong/weak or positive/negative correlation, you can't really get a numerical answer because your using gender, so i think you should try it that way.
Question: How accurately can gender be identified through hair? Let's say: a person commits a crime, a murder, and some of their hair remains at the scene. The police send the hair to a forensics lab. Would they then be able to determine the gender of the perpetrator? Is it necessary for the root of the hair to be present?
Answer: Yes, a forensic team looks at a number of things on hair. 1) they search for traces of drugs. 2) The root of the hair is the living part, so it has DNA and it can be checked for XY chromosomes to determine gender. 3) Hair can vary enough to match a particular hair to a particular person.
If the hair is cut, they can still get information such as hair color, hair type to match it to someone, but they wouldn't be able to determine gender, or do a dna match.
are you worried about something?
Question: What are some specific examples of gender topics/issues that are truly controversial? I need to do an assignment for my Intro To College Writing class. It's an argumentative essay about gender topics/issues. I've tried searching for examples of them, but all I've found were really broad issues, like inequality in education, the workplace, etc. I need something more specific than that. So, can anyone give me specific examples of gender issues? They need to be "truly controversial".
Answer: The second shift
Rape
Domestic violence
Sexual harassment
The glass ceiling
