Machismo
The Spanish and Latin American ideal of men being confident, strong, dignified, brave, overtly masculine, and sexually active. This ideal of a macho , or "real man", was brought to the New World from Spain and Portugal. Its ultimate origin is probably to be found in the Islamic cultural traditions of North Africa that heavily influenced the culture of the Spanish Peninsula until the end of the 1400's A.D. See marianismo.

Question: What is with the spread of the US machismo-gangbanger culture? Blacks and certain latinos are always glorifying this drug and machismo gangbanger culture in the US, why?
I have lived in other cultures like Japan & western europe so I can also distinguish how I would think more educated culture of people would act like.
So Im sort of afraid of the machismo gangbanger homophobic and religousness & ghetto manners and ghetto raps music of the USA Latinos and blacks.
Answer: actually, despite the fact that the 'gangsta'/hip-hop 'thug' thing started as a self-described "black thing", many 'whiteboys' and girls picked up on that culture, also. Plus, not all 'black' or Latinos support the 'gangbanger' crap.
I think part of it is poverty, and part of it is cultural. The direction of mainstream 'rap' music has....
I'm not going to lie. I do like some of the actual music, like NWA or Bone Thugs, (not the newer stuff like Gucci Mane or Soulja Boy) but I don't take it that serious. There are a LOT of easily impressionable idiots and the mainstream culture has went the route of being completely devoid of message or meaning. Dumbed down is an understatement.
Poverty is NOT the only reason kids act like that. I've known black and white kids from the friggin burbs who were "gangsta" wannabe pieces of human dung.
However, there are even underground or lesser known rappers who are even against what the mainstream has become, but sadly they have very little influence on the masses.
Question: How do you explain male machismo? I'm wondering what you think the root causes of machismo are? Is the world a nasty place, and evolutionary competition is the rule, so men must be constantly competitive, and act confident, and this is attractive to women? Are men deeply insecure, and put up a front of machismo to cover for that underlying feeling that no one will really like them unless they act strong? Or are there other reasons? Please describe the reasons in some detail, and explain how you think machismo fits into contemporary societies around the world, not just in the U.S.
Answer: Machismo is a prominently exhibited or excessive masculinity. As an attitude, machismo ranges from a personal sense of virility to a more extreme masculism. In many cultures, machismo is acceptable and even expected.
The trait may be seen as the product of runaway evolution, as Frits Staal notes,
The peacock's tail, the grotesquely enlarged claw of the male fiddler crab and the machismo of members of the human species are all exaggerated features that may cause injury to individuals that display them but attract females
In American literature, a memorable example of machismo comes from Tennessee Williams' character Stanley Kowalski, the egotistical brother-in-law in A Streetcar Named Desire. In the play (and in the motion picture), Stanley epitomises the hyper-masculine alpha male, socially and physically dominating and imposing his will upon his wife and her sister, Blanche Dubois. Bound up with Stanley's aggressive and occasionally misogynist views is a strong sense of pride and honor which leads to his hatred of Blanche.
In the play "A View from the Bridge" by Arthur Miller, one of the main characters Eddie is a classic type who displays machismo. He wants to be the best out of the men who he is among and when beaten, becomes very quiet.
In Spanish
The English word "machismo" originates in an identical Spanish word, which however has a somewhat different meaning. Spanish machismo refers exclusively to the belief in the superiority of males over females, that is it means "sexism" or "male chauvinism" (along with the Spanish adjective machista, "sexist" or "male chauvinist").[3] Machismo itself derives from macho, a latin word taken from Galician, meaning "male [animal]" or, when used metaphorically, "masculine" or "very masculine".
Question: What are examples of Machismo in America in the media? I have to do a spanish presentation exhibiting examples of hispanic machismo in america such as in television, movies, songs, ect.
Answer: well look at the way the way they protray hispanics in movies. most are labeled as 'rico suave' or a manly gangster or something like that.
look at the music for example :reggaeton, the way they present themselves in the music videos or the way they talk about or to other people in their songs
Question: Is there a particular display of machismo that aggravates you the most? Overall, I don't think machismo is inherently bad, but when it comes to jerks on the road in their souped up Honda Civics darting in and out of traffic, I start wondering where all the cops are.
And from what I've seen here, machismo isn't isolated to men.
@Ellis- the only insecurity comes from the concern of safety of myself and those around me.
Answer: I really hate it when people show off their possessions in the hope that they'll get a phone number out of it. Honestly, who gives a f__k?
Question: What are tipical examples of hispanic Machismo? We all know its out there, but what are things that you could typically expect from machismo men, the familys, machismo societies etc...
I'm doing a debate against machismo.. and i just need concrete stuff.. like for example.. "little boys in latino america aren't taught the household chores, because thats the 'womens' job"..
Anybody know of other things like that in the hispanic world that just scream machismo?
Answer: Sexual Pleasure always comes first
Question: Can you create a short story or dialogue that involves Machismo? Please help me, i need to sleep, it like 12:35am where i am and i can not think of anything.
Answer: You could write a short story about a father/son hunting trip, where the father teaches the son to "be a man" by explaining him all the right ways to objectify women and how to be a tough, abrasive d-bag.
Question: What would you do if you saw Hogan wrestling vs Black Machismo? Funniest answer gets best answer.
Id shoot my TV then go downtown to jump off the empire state building.
Answer: Look for the Ultimate Warrior to run out and clothesline both of them.
Question: How might someone justify machismo? I need help please, i have an idea of machismo but i kind of do not really understand it. Also when justifying it, could you justify machismo is a positive way.
Answer: According to Wiki, Machismo is "prominently exhibited or excessive masculinity."
I suppose that anything in excess might be viewed as a bad thing, but who is to say what is excessive?
Men often feel a need, and have a right to act, "masculine", just as women often feel a need to act "feminine".
Only insecure feminists who feel threatened by masculinity would be upset by some guy acting masculine, unless his behavior over the top.
Question: Is It True That All Cuban Wrestlers Are Oozing With Machismo ? Something happen to this, something going to happen to you.
Answer: Seems agreeable
Question: When stone cold sharkboy premeired, Balck Machismo cut a promo as Jay Lethal. Coincidence? I think TNA wants to limit their parody wrestlers to one a week. Jay will probably have the night off this week.
Answer: I think Jay Lethal did it for good reason.
In the storyline, look at how Team 3D has treated him and has done to his credibility as an X Division champion. It was only for so long until Jay Lethal had to finally get p*ssed off and break his Macho Man persona.
I actually found it as a good move.
Question: Is there a correlation between machismo, and deep seated fear of the world around you? Which political candidates go out of their way to display their bravado?
Answer: Obama !
Question: Do you Americans are sympathetic with Feminism or Machismo ? Who should lead the USA, a woman or a man?
Answer: whoever is more qualified and will do the job right. (for me it's Hillary)
i think that machismo-ism is more accepted, people see feminists as annoying ugly women trying to get better pay than men. (and for me, its i think women should have EQUAL pay, one of them isn't better than the other.)
Question: What is a good brand of engine/gear oil for machismo 2003 bullet? The garage fellows put some oil which i am not sure.
Answer: Castrol is best. Has been recommended for Enfields since the fifties.
Question: Does soccer fail to satisfy the machismo of American isolationists?
Answer: Very likely, since it's not such a violent sport. American football seems to cover the need for aggression much more effectively. Besides, soccer is mostly played in Europe and Latin America, so that counts against it too, given the context.
Question: Women, does Machismo behavior clashes with your personality? How often do you run into men like this?
How do you usually go about handling the situation?
Answer: when I'm around men from more traditional cultures I adjust my attitude. I know some men who will actually be upset and offended if I pay for their coffee etc. And sometimes I'll be carrying something like a 25 kilo bag of plaster and a nice older man will appear and take it off me. I don't make a thing about it, I thank him, he feels good, I feel good, win win.
If the machismo takes the form of telling me I'm not allowed to do something, or telling me what to do, then there's a problem... but I don't have those type of guys in my life in that kind of position where they'd have any say.
Question: What's the charm in machismo, persistent, rude men? I ask because if men continue to act like this, it must work on some women...
So what's the charm?
Answer: It always ends in steamy sex and "happy endings" in the movies... and other fiction.... esp porn.
For a lot of guys that's all the "dating" experience they've got. Also the only role models.
And I think some women believe that garbage as well.
Question: Women, does Machismo behavior clash with your personality? How often do you run into men like this?
How do you usually go about handling the situation?
Answer: Sometimes... I just let it go i mean if they think certain jobs are "mens" work than I'm just like ok whatever you do it and i just relax lol ;)
Question: Jay Lethal and his Black Machismo character? Isn't it about time he stopped trying to be Randy Savage? And if so, what kind of angle and character would you make for him?
Answer: I think he should keep working the angle as it's popular with fans and the parody elements in TNA such as Stone Cold's Shark Boy and The Hurricane's Super Eric seem to be working well.If it starts getting stale or predictable, then he should call it quits.I'd like to see him go back to his character Hydro when he was in ROH in 2002.He was part of the Special K faction and his "K-Kwik" style dancing character would be a different and interesting gimmick for him to work.
Question: To be taken seriously does Jay Lethal need to stop ripping off the Machismo gimmick? He's only 24 but he possesses all the talent in the world to go somewhere with his wrestling career but is currently going nowhere and has a very poor gimmick.
Answer: The only way he could be ripping off a gimmick is if he stole it and didn't have permission to do it. He's using the gimmick because he wants to pay his respects to MachoMan. Nothing wrong with that.
