Self Uniting Marriage License
A provision in some state laws that recognize marriages performed without officiating clergy.
Question: Can you get a self uniting marriage license in S. Indiana?
It's a license where you can pretty much marry yourselves, you don't need an officiant.
Answer: No. That's not legal.
Question: Does anyone have information on self uniting ceremonies in Cumberland County PA? Thanks? My fiancé and I are more spiritual then religious and have decided that we do not want a minister performing our wedding ceremony. We have thought about having a judge or other officiant, however I feel that is impersonal and boring. So I would like my brother from California (who is not an officiant) to help us with the ceremony. I have heard from some that online officiants are not recognized in some counties in PA, so I was very excited when I discovered the self-uniting marriage license. Now I would like more information if anyone has any, specifically for Cumberland County PA. Thank you!

Question: Has anyone had a "self-uniting" ceremony? Due to a job transfer (we knew it was a possibility), my fiance and I will most likely have to postpone our wedding. We were going to get married in my home state, and will now probably be getting married in Pennsylvania, where we will live. I was surprised to see that Pennsylvania law allows a couple to get a "self-uniting" marriage license; with two witnesses, the couple can legalize their marriage without an officiant. Since we do not have a home church yet and I've never been real excited by the idea of hiring a wedding minister who has no real connection to us JUST to have a minister, I admit that I'm intrigued.
Have any of you done this? Were you happy, or did you feel like you missed something by not having an officiant? Or did you get a friend or someone to walk you through the service and take the place of an officiant?

Thanks, PointsPrincess. Yeah, the more I think of it, the more excited I'm getting. Talk about being able to customize a ceremony! I just brought it up with my fiance, and he thinks it sounds pretty cool, too. He's pretty flexible, though; I think he just wants me to be happy with whatever we choose. (I'm a lucky woman!) We were going to have a wedding at a park for about 25-45 on a very tight budget; now we'll probably have a small home or park wedding with 10 people or fewer but spend the same amount of money and go out somewhere very nice afterward for dinner and dancing.
Answer: The state of Kansas allows this also (they did it when they did away with common law, I think). I recently went to a wedding of about 40 people where the bride & groom had their friend act as a reader and then declared their intentions thru their vows, etc. - so it seemed like he was an officiant, but he was not really. It worked for them & the wedding was great - he asked them to now declare make their intent to be married or something like that before the assembled company... It was a nice wedding in a county park and VFW Hall reception.

I’m not a big fan of Democrats right now. In fact, I’m so upset with their negotiations to be bi-partisan, I actually considered not voting for a single democrat this November and instead voting for an independent or abstaining my vote altogether. Many LGBT people have made calls for a boycott of the democrats – no money and no votes. But I live in Texas and that changes things for me.
The Texas GOP has released their “2010 State Republican Party Platform” and its filled with hate and bigotry. One blogger even likened the platform to being very similar to that of Uganda’s anti-homosexuality bill – and they are absolutely right!
The anti-gayness of the Republican platform began with their principles. Principle #6 begins, :
We believe in… Self-sufficient families, founded on the traditional marriage of a natural man and a natural woman.
That principle concurs with roughly 76% of Texas voters (which was the percentage that voted to support an amendment to the Texas Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, or anything even similar to it).
But it gets far more frightening. Under the bold, uppercase heading, “Strengthening Families, Protecting Life and Promoting Health” the Texas GOP outlines why I should be legislated back into the closet and how they intend to do it:
Family and Defense of Marriage – We support the definition of marriage as a God–ordained, legal and moral commitment only between a natural man and a natural woman, which is the foundational unit of a healthy society, and we oppose the assault on marriage by judicial activists. *** We further call on Congress to pass and the state legislatures to ratify a marriage amendment declaring that marriage in the United States shall consist of and be recognized only as the union of a natural man and a natural woman. Neither the United States nor any state shall recognize or grant to any unmarried person the legal rights or status of a spouse.
You’ll note that the Texas GOP is asking that marriage rights in other states be revoked as well.
Family Values – We affirm that this section is a response to the attacks on traditional family values. These include well funded, vigorous political and judicial attempts by powerful organizations and branches of the government to force acceptance, affirmation and normalization of homosexual behavior upon school children, parents, educational institutions, businesses, employees, government bodies and religious institutions and charities. These aggressive, intolerant efforts marginalize as bigots anyone who dissents.
You’ll notice that the shoe fits. They are attempting to legislate me. They are attempting to deny me fundamental rights they enjoy based upon, as evidenced by this proposal, their belief in an intolerant and uncaring “God.” Here’s the definition of bigot to make it clear that they are what they claim not to be: “One who is strongly partial to one’s own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.”
Thus, I am a bigot too because I’m intolerant of the belief that I am inferior as a human to the Texas GOP. I accept and embrace that fact. The only difference between my bigotry and theirs is that I don’t tell them who they should marry.
But wait, it gets worse and here’s where we start sounding very Ugandan:
Marriage Licenses – We support legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple and for any civil official to perform a marriage ceremony for such.
That’s right. If you are a heterosexual clergy member who decides to perform a marriage ceremony for a same-sex person, you go to prison. You don’t have to have gay sex anymore to go to prison in Texas (as you did in the past), now you can go just for supporting a life commitment between two people of the same-sex.
The Texas GOP then goes on to ignorantly declare that homosexuality:
tears at the fabric of society,
contributes to the breakdown of the family unit,
leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases, and
is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have been ordained by God, recognized by our country’s founders, and shared by the majority of Texans.
But wait, it gets worse… still:
Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable “alternative” lifestyle in our public education and policy, nor should “family” be redefined to include homosexual “couples.” We are opposed to any granting of special legal entitlements, refuse to recognize, or grant special privileges including, but not limited to: marriage between persons of the same sex (regardless of state of origin), custody of children by homosexuals, homosexual partner insurance or retirement benefits. Basically the Texas GOP wants to make homosexuality a crime outlawing homosexual acts and if caught they will be given time in prison, also heterosexuals that support gay rights will be sent straight to prison too!
They also want to spread this law to the rest of the US!

Thanks for the link. Clearly, the blogger is manipulating their words as he attempts to understand/translate their statements. Nowhere does it say that the Texas GOP wants to put gay people in jail.
Question: (long) lgbt and other: do you feel that the us is full of hypocrisy when it comes to eqaul right and all that? The First Amendment, in which it is stated, that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” makes the religious argument against gay marriage and rights pretty much an irrelevant point.
“The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States." Is stated in Clause 1, which means that if a couple is allowed to marry in Massachusetts, no other state should ignore that marriage license. Therefore, it also makes the DOMAs unconstitutional.
The Federal Marriage Amendment (FDA) is also unconstitutional as stated in the Fourth article and the Ninth Amendment. Article Four states: "Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.", and the ninth amendment states: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. In other words, this disallows who is granted the rights and privileges, and who doesn’t. In our societal efforts to make this ruling a social and legal reality, we have made tremendous strides to end all forms of discrimination finally recognizing our fellow man and women’s rights as unalienable regardless of creed, religion, race, gender, and even sexual orientation."
Even the Declaration of Independence states: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” If gay people want to get married, and that’s what makes them happy, so be it.

Answer: Yeah I do. The government just has that stuff so that they won't get in trouble. Maybe in the past, those words meant something but now they just don't. There are always going to be people who don't believe in equal rights and don't think everyone is equal, and unfortunately some of those people are in government. Honestly on the topic of gay marriage, there is absolutely NO solid argument that it should not be. If the government really followed the first amendment, gays and lesbians could marry whomever they wanted. There is nothing wrong with gay marriage, it's not hurting anyone, ITS MARRIAGE the most blissful thing in the world and once again something else is being corrupted by the government and their biased rules. The only argument people have come up with about gay marriage is the "religious argument" which should not even stand up because the first amendment clearly states otherwise as you posted. If all "men" are created equally, why does the government not allow some people to love different to marry? I do believe one day gay marriage will be legalized everywhere. Question: Self-uniting marriage license in PA? My guy and I are interested in obtaining a self-uniting marriage license in the Philadelphia county. We need to know:
1) Do we need to show proof that we're Quakers in order to get it?
2) Can we get the license the same day we apply or do we have to wait the 3-day period post-application process?
3) How much it costs ($80 or $80+$90?)
I've been to Philly's Register of Wills site but their information isn't very clear about how it pertains to self-uniting marriage licenses.
If anyone's gone through this, I'd much appreciate your insight! Thanks.

We're opting for a self-uniting marriage because we both have different religious/spiritual beliefs and although we can get clergy from a non-denominational background to perform our ceremony, we're trying to get all this done in the quickest, simplest way possible. Someone told me a self-uniting marriage license was the easiest way so I was curious if this is the route we should go :)
