The Stockholm Syndrome
The Stockholm Syndrome (SS) is a psychological involuntary state in which victims of kidnapping or abuse begin to feel sympathy, emotional bonding, and solidarity for those who are abusing them or keeping them captive in oppressive situations.
Question: What is Stockholm Syndrome and how is it treatable? What is Stockholm Syndrome?
It's symptoms.
How is showing affection for the abuser a bad thing? If this person think that his abuser had a troubled past. Or a mental problem then shows sympathy for him, how is that mental illness.
And last question. If this is treatable, tell me how this disorder gets treated. If it's therapy or rehabilitation, please explain what therapists might do
Answer: Isolation - Help the client identify sources of supportive intervention; Self-help groups or group therapy (group needs to be homogeneous to needs), also hot lines, crisis centers, shelters and friends.
Violence - As victims in abusive relationships minimize the abuse, or are in so much denial it may be necessary to ask directly about the different types of violent behavior. Many woman (and children) are confused about what is acceptable male (parental / authority) behavior. Journal keeping, autobiographical writing, reading of first hand accounts or seeing films that deal with abuse may be helpful to clients.
Perceived Kindness - Encourage the client to develop alternative sources of nurturance and caring (see #1).
Validating both Love and Terror - Helping the client integrate both disassociated 'sides' of the abuser, will assist her in giving up her dream that the relationship will become what she had hoped it would be.
Question: Are there any good romance novels involving Stockholm Syndrome? The concept has always interested me, and for some reason I'm also going through this romance novel phase. So, do any of you know any good romance novels about Stockholm Syndrome? Any length or age group is fine. I prefer a published book, but if you know anything good written online, that'd be fine, too. Thanks for your help.
Answer: http://www.amazon.com/Stockholm-Syndrome…
Go crazy! :)
Question: Have there ever been recorded cases of Stockholm syndrome in a military? I was just reading about it now, and it made me think of this.
Military personnel who are captured are in a similar situation, particularly if they are held by some of the more brutal factions, for instance, a US marine captured by Vietcong. As such, I was wondering, does anybody know of any cases of Stockholm syndrome being developed by captured military personnel?
Thanks, I was just curious, that's all.
Answer: I'm sure there are but I can't think of any specific example.
The one example I can think of in regards to Stockholm Syndrome is actually reverse Stockholm Syndrome. Michael Durant was a Night Stalker pilot in Somalia when his Black Hawk was shot down. When the Red Cross eventually was allowed to see him, the Red Cross worker noted that it seemed as if two of his captors were actually being sympathetic and protective towards him. He actually says in his book that, if not for them, he probably would have died.
So, I think it is very possible that captors can have a type of reverse Stockholm Syndrome. I think it is interesting if it is possible if no other reasons, then the military can study these instances and try to figure out the common thread and then incorporate that knowledge into S.E.R.E. training or just basic survival training.

Question: Are there any books or stories based on the Stockholm Syndrome? Stockholm Syndrome is where a captive falls in love or befriends the person they are imprisoned by. Is there any literature or stories based on this situation?
Answer: This is the best I could come up w/. Sorry! take a look at the external links.

Question: Are there any good novels that are based on stockholm syndrome? I've recently become really interest in the concept of stockholm syndrome, and as i was googling about it, i came across an online novel thingo where someone had made a story about someone who was undergoing stockholm syndrome, which was reaaally good. like the whole falling in love with their captor thing.
So, i was just wondering if there were any good novels (whether theyre published books, or online) that were relating to something like that. Or even any movies.
thank you :)

Question: Is there a book or a movie called/about Stockholm Syndrome? I'm really interested in doing a book about Stockholm Syndrome, mostly from the POVs of the victim and the abuser. I know Stockholm Syndrom has been mentioned in some TV shows and such, but has this already been done?
Answer: I am quite sure that if you have the credentials, mainly the research (and maybe, if you can, at least one 'connection' in that field), you should write a book about Stockholm Syndrome.
A lot of people are interested in that, because a lot of media has presented it... mainly Hollywood scripts. Didn't that movie "The Mexican" with Pitt, Roberts and M.G. do a 'bad guy' turns out to be 'okay' thing?
And think of the classic with Robert DeNiro and Charles ___ (shoot. ?) where Charles is a much smarter white collar criminal and DeNiro is an almost fired bounty hunter and they spend much of the movie handcuffed together; definitely together at the very least... I have this one and can't find it to give you the title. A clerk would know.
There is an award-winning novel about this too, in which, among others, an opera diva and an accomplished pianist are kidnapped and every one becomes as a sort of 'family,' but it ends so... And I can't think of the name of it. A South or Central American writer as I recall.
These 'popular' at-least-bits-of-media touching this subject lead the way, I think, into more wanted. Go for it.
Question: Do non-Israelites who worship the Abrahamic God suffer from Stockholm Syndrome? In psychology, Stockholm syndrome is a term used to describe a paradoxical psychological phenomenon wherein hostages express adulation and have positive feelings towards their captors that appear irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims. After all, all these people had their own perfectly good gods before someone imposed this bully on them.
Answer: Yes they do.
Examples are the Native Americans who were forced to give up not only their way of life but their belief systems as well. Surely the same is true throughout all of the New World when the priests forced conversions upon the Aztec. Going farther back in history one can find other examples, as well.

Question: In the 1970's were people suffering from stockholm syndrome recruited to organizations responsible for safety critical systems ? So far so good, but did quality of the systems start to fall off after these people started to take the reins of the organizations ?
(The people with stockholm syndrome HADN'T been recruited because of their greatly superior skills in spite of suffering from stockholm syndrome, but more likely were recruited to show that "discrimination" in employment wasn't occurring).
Answer: REPEAT:
America has been shipping jobs overseas BY PLAN since the 1960's as per a report created by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Trilateralist Commission. Unless Nelson and John Rockefeller and company were suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, I don't think you can blame the deterioration of American goods and services on that. Since the 1970's the education system in America has been annihilated by the government and you want to blame the inadequacy of American labor on Stockholm Syndrome? Why not blame space aliens, it would be more plausible.
Question: Why do foreign ESL teachers in Taiwan hate China? Do they have Stockholm Syndrome? I notice that many ESL teachers in Taiwan, who probably knew nothing about Taiwan politics prior to starting their jobs there, are now ultra-extremist Taiwan independence supporters. Their intense pro-Taiwan-independence emotions are inexplicable, since these folks are from New Jersey or some other uninvolved origin. When they go home to New Jersey, will they still be Taiwan-ultra-nationalists? Stockholm syndrome is the paradoxical psychological condition of a hostage feeling sympathy with his the criminals who hold him captive.
Answer: Because living in Taiwan is an eye-opener. Most Westerners have no clue about what goes on in Taiwan because stuff that happens in Taiwan is rarely publicized in Western, or at least American media. Democracy is so easily taken for granted in America because Americans enjoy such a great degree of freedom. When ESL teachers actually live and experience Taiwan, they are probably shocked to find that the Taiwanese people are still struggling to attain true freedom and their identity. Unlike the United States that has been a democracy for over two centuries, Taiwan's transition from martial law to democracy was only a decade or two ago. Despite being a democracy, the Taiwanese are not truly free because of the political pressures from China and Kuomintang (the Chinese Nationalist Party).
Because of opposition from China, Taiwan has repeatedly been denied entry into the United Nations. There are 195 countries in this world and only THREE nations are not part of the UN. They are Kosovo, Vatican City, and Taiwan. Even countries like North Korea and Cuba that are known for human right violations are allowed into the UN, but Taiwan -- a democratic nation of 23 million people is not allowed to be part of the United Nation? This is injustice and I believe that anyone with an American ideology would be shocked at this suppression. Taiwan is also denied entry into the World Health Organization (again, because of China) and during the outbreak of the contagious SARS virus, the W.H.O. provided no assistance to Taiwan. Because of China, Taiwan is unable to participate in international events as "Taiwan;" instead, Taiwan must participate as "Chinese Taipei." China calls Taiwanese "brothers," and yet they have 2000 missiles pointed at Taiwan? Isn't there something wrong about that? Most of those foreign ESL teachers that "hate" China are also strong opponents of the current pro-China Kuomintang, which wishes to unify with China. This is very concerning as the majority of Taiwanese people are against this. If the KMT continues to move towards China (against the will of the people), the democracy of Taiwan will be dangerously threatened.
I believe that yes, when these ESL teachers go home, they will still be the same "ultra-extremist Taiwan independence supporters" as they were in Taiwan. I have no doubt that their time in Taiwan was a life-changing and eye-opening experience.
Question: Is Stockholm Syndrome going to be covered under the public option? Anyone know? It seems that many Americans have it and need to be treated.
Answer: LOL. You rock.
Question: Movie about origins of the term stockholm syndrome? I first heard about stockholm-syndrome in the series flashpoint, when I looked ferther into it , I learned that this term orginated from an incident in stockholm where hostages defended their hostage takers, was there ever a movie or documentary made about this subject?
I would like the name of the documentairy or movie if there is one about this
(Sorry for my terrible english)
Answer: Wikipedia says: "The syndrome is named after the Norrmalmstorg robbery of Kreditbanken at Norrmalmstorg in Stockholm, in which the bank robbers held bank employees hostage from August 23 to August 28, 1973. In this case, the victims became emotionally attached to their captors, and even defended them after they were freed from their six-day ordeal."
Swedish TV made a documentary about the case, but I don't know if it's available online or on home video:

Question: How do you play the piano part in Stockholm Syndrome by Muse? After listening to Stockholm Syndrome by Muse, I've wanted to learn the cool piano 'riff', if you will. It comes in around 1 minute 30 seconds. Anyone know how it goes?
Thanks

Question: Is it possible to encourage stockholm syndrome? cuz it definitely doesnt seem to be happening to the people in my basement, and some of them have been in there for years. thanx in advance.
Answer: Of course there is. First, let the police know about your hostages. You want to create a sort of a siege environment. Then, get your hostages to relay your demands over the telephone to the police. You want the hostages to start seeing you as the good guy, the one who wants to end all this. The police are the ones keeping them there because they won't give you what you want. See how that works? When the hostage starts telling the police what 'we want' rather than what 'he wants' then you know it's working.
Question: Is it Stockholm Syndrome that so many ordinary Americans defend health insurance companies? When any rational person would look at many of these companies with disdain for practising "rescission," rationing out care and overcharging? Seriously, why so much anger directed towards government when the list of sins committed by these companies is well documented? People on here talk about rationing in universal health care systems, but rationing is done all the time by AETNA, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, etc.
Uh, b/c car insurance companies don't gouge prices the way Aetna and Blue Cross/Blue Shield do. Plus, just b/c you have had a good personal experience doesn't mean that thousands of other customers have had a good experience. If you love private insurance so much, you'll be happy to know that countries with UHC also have a private option, e.g, Ireland, Britain, France, Australia, NZ, etc.
Answer: It is surprising that Americans hate the idea of providing health care or education to the people who work 80 hours a week picking their vegetables, but they don't mind giving 80% of the wealth created by workers to insurance companies, banks, and stock holders.
Question: What movies have references to Stockholm syndrome? For example, in "A Perfect Getaway" the women loves her abuser and does whatever he wants, even though its wrong. Can you give me some more examples?
Answer: It is mentioned in Die HArd and "The World is Not enough" is another example
Question: Why are the large majoirity of people who exhibit Stockholm Syndrome women?
Google it.....there is tons of data proving this. Just one of many - go to the Wikipedia page on it - the notable cases are all women.
Answer: Well, firstly, most people aren't trained to resist it.
Secondly, women are generally followers, despite their constant rantings about 'strong, independent' and so on. They always feel that by following the majority or where the 'power' lies, they will come out ahead.
A perfect example is when you decide that City Hall has insulted you grievously, and it's time to do something about it! In 99% of cases, your woman will oppose your doing that - on the basis that it's 'dangerous', and 'risky', and 'foolhardy'. Get my direction here? Point is - she will spend so much of your time and energy fighting with you over your demand to correct a wrong that you may well have no energy left for the real fight. That's why the term STFU was invented.
In any case, the City Hall scenario is Stockholm Syndrome writ large and most common. No matter how wrong and oppressive and even violent city Hall may have been to you, the woman will still somehow continue to believe that they are the best bet for doing right (yardle, yardle, yardle).
It's essentially a fatal character flaw, though originally based on a fairly solid survival strategy. Sleep with the enemy, and you'll somehow survive. (Nice twist on an old theme there, Igor!).
Question: dos Christians suffer from Stockholm syndrome? why else would they worship a murdering, petty, genocidaltyrant? I don"t need to show you the relevant scripture highlighting all the people he has killed, we have all read the bible.
Answer: *Do
People will always worship something. If it's not God, it's science. If it's not science, it's the earth. If it's not the earth, it's their Playstation 3. Etc, Etc. I'm not quite sure what kind of answer or debate you are looking for. Perhaps a fight instead of a discussion.
Question: I have a question about Stockholm Syndrome? Is it considered Stockholm Syndrome if a victim of a kidnapping is willing to go with the kidnapper and the kidnapper doesn't hurt or abuse the victim in any way, just shows affection and love?
Answer: I don't think so because in Stockholm Syndrome the kidnapper/hostage-taker/abuser must be... well, abusive.
Question: Is it possible that liberals have Stockholm Syndrome? They seem to have various symptoms of the mental illness that causes you to identify with your captor as well as love and trust them. Do liberals have this?
Answer: It sure seems like they do!
Question: can stockholm syndrome be considered between spouses? My sister is with the father of one of her two children and until about 10 yrs ago he used to beat the holy living crap out of her by smashing her head into walls, floors, vehicles, sidewalks, basically anything and everything he got near when she talked without his permission or talked back to him but my question is for any doctors that read this could sh be suffering from what we commonly know as a syndrome for people who are kidnapped.
Answer: Absolutely -- it would be an even stronger response as the people involved have some type of other commitment as well.
Please keep her and her children safe!!
