Debt Check

A program, developed by the Treasury Department's Financial Management Service, which allows agencies and outside lenders to determine whether applicants for Federal loans, loan insurance or loan guarantees owe delinquent child support or delinquent non-tax debt to the Federal government. Federal agencies are required to deny loans, loan insurance, or loan guarantees to individuals who owe delinquent child support if those debts have been referred to the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) for administrative offset.

Question: You have a debt on your credit report. Can your wages be garnished if you make payments via check? I have a medical bill on my credit report that I would like to make payments on. If I begin to make payments on this debt via personal check, can they automatically garnish the funds from my checking account?

Answer: It's not smart to tip off your creditor about where you keep your money. Writing a check gives them a direct line to where your account is located. It would be very simple for them to get a court judgement, then take the money from your account. Send them money by money order if at all possible.
