By the way, i at least made sure the area of delivery was free from any visible bacteria such as dirt etc.

Answer: Anything that punctures the skin will carry some bacteria through. However, if the needle itself was clean, there probably isn't much to worry about. If the area starts swelling or showing other signs of infection, go to your doctor to have it checked out. Think of it like this: you've had cuts and scratches before, right? And they don't all get infected. (Disregard the depth. If it bleeds, bacteria can get into the blood).

My doctor was checking my dilation (my water had broken at 35 weeks and I had been given pitocin to start contractions), when she started laughing while checking my cervical dilation. When I asked why she was laughing, she replied that my baby had grabbed her fingers and wouldnt let go. She said it had never happened in her 20 years as an OB and would probably never happen again. I was telling this story at work (its his birthday tomorrow), when one of the nurses started arguing with me that it was physically impossible for this to happen and that my doctor had either been lying to me or I was making it up. My own mother, mother in law, and husband were all in the room at the time and all recall this happening... So my question is this: Is it possible for a baby (he was born at 6lb and 17 inches long) to get their hand up by their head during delivery and grab on to the doctor's finger?

Answer: Yes it is, it happened to me - I was the one grabbed. I had a labor patient and the baby's head hadn't engaged in the pelvis straight, and when her water broke the baby's hand was up in front, over the top of the head, coming out of the cervix in front of the head. I was doing a cervical exam and trying to feel how dilated she was and I panicked because I felt something strange and I thought maybe she had a prolapsed cord. But then the "thing" grabbed onto my finger and I could feel with my other finger the baby's own tiny fingers. She was brought back for an emergency c-section because the whole arm was coming out first instead of the head, it was lodged crooked and it wasn't going to come out head first.

Answer: My daughter always had her hand up by her head and face in every ultrasound (still does now). She also was face up. She moved while I was in labor and lowered her hand. Most babies as they move down the birth canal will rotate into position. Good Luck with your little one!
