Two-spirited
A term used to refer to North American Indian homosexual men of the Great Plains and elsewhere in the West. In the past, two-spirited men led their lives as transvestites and were given respected social statuses within their societies. Formerly, they were known by the somewhat derogatory French term "berdache", which in turn came from an Arabic word meaning a slave. Today, some homosexual Native American women also refer to themselves as being two-spirited.
Question: If you are said to be two spirited in aboriginal culture are you gay or Bisexual? Aboriginals (1st Nations people) use the term Two spirited and I am just wondering if anyone can explain this to me better as to what they mean...I know it is a GLBT type term.
Answer: i'm not certain if they would be considered gay or bi, but what I do know is that people termed two spirited were revered in ancient times. In fact some cultures called them babaylan, which loosely means "one of two spirits" and was considered either a medicine/faith healer or an oracle.
Question: what does it mean in the gay culture/community to be two-spirited, or in modern terms bisexual? can't help but to have urges for men and women, but more of a general tug for women. wink wink. :)
Answer: Some gay people are actually pretty ignorant about bisexuality. But it's all about who you decide to surround yourself with. Some gay people have no problem being friends/more-than-friends with bisexuals. Some people are what you'd call monosexual. They believe that people should either be homosexual or heterosexual; no inbetween. Just surround yourself with accepting people, and you'll have no problems.
Question: Can i be a lesbian and two spirited??....? Annnd what does two spirited mean?? How do you know if you're two spirited and how do you come out to your friends and family??

Answer: Two spirited is a Native American term that addressed transgenders or transsexuals who felt they were two people, like an FtM might express "I feel I was born in the wrong body" Can you be lesbian and two spirited? Sure. Do you feel you should have been born a boy? Or do you feel you are a boy trapped in a woman's body?
Question: Are transsexuals two spirited people? If not, then whats the difference? Can a two spirit be lesbian?
Answer: Yes and No.
In Native American culture it is a term applied to all kinds of gender variant people.
However, in general society the definition of "transsexual" is pretty specific:
A transsexual is a person who was born with a gender identity that is in opposition to the body they were born into, literally a female brain in a male body or vice-versa.
Thus a transsexual person has a firm gender identity (male or female) and they adhere to the gender binary. If they do not adhere to the binary then they are not transsexual, they would be transgender. A bit about that:
“Transgender” is an umbrella term that covers many diverse groups that have little or nothing to do with each other. Many people assume it refers just to transsexual people, but they are wrong. Transsexual people only represent a small fraction of those who are considered “transgender”. And for the record a transsexual person is someone who was born with a brain-body mismatch, literally a female brain in a male body or vice-versa. It is a naturally occurring birth condition. Through the process of TRANSITION transsexual people change their bodies to match the true inner gender and assume a gender appropriate role in society. Also one does not “become” transsexual; as I said we are BORN that way.
“Transgender” refers to anyone who varies from the societal norms for their gender as assigned at birth. Other than transsexual people other groups under the transgender umbrella include:
Cross-dressers (obsolete term was “transvestite”)
Drag queens
Drag kings
Androgynes
Genderqueer
Genderf*ck
A-gender
Bi-gender
Two-spirit
And more.
Can a Two-Spirit be lesbian? Depends on how the person themselves identifies. If they identify as female and are attracted to other females... YES.
Hope this helps.
Question: What does 'two-spirited' refer to in the GLBT community?
Great answers so far! So would you use the term to describe someone who is androgenous? Think Pat on SNL! LOL!
Answer: It is a term used by Native Americans mostly. "two-spirited" meaning some one possessing both male and female energies.
Question: Religions that portray a bi-gendered (or two-spirited) deity or person? I'm looking for any bi-gendered (two-spirited) figures in modern-day religions. Bi-gendered meaning both masculine and feminine, and Two-spirited meaning having a male spirit and a female spirit.
Answer: I am not sure if its where you got the term, or its "coincidence" but at least some American Indian spiritualitys have a "twospirit" concept as something a person can be.
as for deitys, I am pretty sure some of the hindu and/or buddhist deitys are rather ... uhh, ambiguious/versatile in their gender. (showing up as both genders at various times, or something)
don't have any idea beyond that though.
Question: What does it mean to have two spirits come to you? My father just died a few days ago and,on the day of the funeral, two dark figures one tall and one shorter, stood beside my bed and one said "Cover Her." When i heard that I covered myself with a blanket. I keep it pretty cold in the house. I was not afraid at all. Im pretty sure it was my dad and an older female. My sister said when two spirits come it means your the next to die. I doubt this so i am asking anyone that may know.
Answer: First, I want to say that I am very sorry for your loss. Losing a loved one - especially a parent is a very hard thing to go through. *hugs*
I believe in spirits, and can even see them. So I have a different point of view then some of the other answerers.
No, 2 spirits visiting you does not mean that you are going to die next. It just means that you've had 2 spirits visit - nothing more and nothing less. So please do not worry yourself with that, your sister is wrong.
The older female maybe was a relative of your dad's, like his mom or his grandmother. Or even a spirit guide or someone else close to you who's past.
If you felt comfortable and weren't frightened, take that as a sign that they did not mean you any harm. Probably they came to comfort you. That's quite common in hard times.
I hope that helps.
Question: Is there enough scholarly materials on the native american "two-spirit" to write a 15 page research paper? Not sure if there is enough information to develop this topic.
Answer: the term two spirits was invented by the gay community. native people have never used that term nor did we hold homosexuals in any special esteem. they were simply members of the community like everyone else.
so no, you will not find enough "scholarly" material since the entire premise is false.
Question: What do you think of the term, "two spirited"? I was brought up with the idea and it always made perfect sense to me.
Two-Spirit (also two spirit or twospirit) people are Native Americans who fulfill one of many mixed gender roles found traditionally among many Native Americans and Canadian First Nations indigenous groups. Traditionally the roles included wearing the clothing and performing the work of both male and female genders. The term usually implies a masculine spirit and a feminine spirit living in the same body and was coined by contemporary gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Native Americans to describe themselves and the traditional roles they are reclaiming. There are many indigenous terms for these individuals in the various Native American languages as "what scholars generically refer to as 'Native American gender diversity' was a fundamental institution among most tribal peoples"[1].
As of 1991, male and female bodied Two-Spirit people have been "documented in over 130 tribes, in every region of North America, among every type of native culture".
This is from Wikipedia.
Alpha scorchi you have made it clear on many occasions that you have no respect for any beliefs other than your own
Perhaps if you dropped your racist attitudes and you could learn something
Answer: I think that it is a very powerful ideal to live two spirited.
I had never heard of it, but, like many of the ideals that the Native Americans held true seem to make a lot of sense.
As God is creator of all things, Mother Nature is the lifeblood of us all and the Native American tribes have seemed to hold the most respect for the earth.
That they have lived knowing that in some cases, two spirits in one body, and accepted it as the way for some, the Natives have shown how civilization on more than one occasion, has set us backward not forward.
I am glad to know of this phenomenon of twospirit.
Thankyou.
peace
Question: Two Spirits, Are there any other cultures that have a similar belief on homosexuality? I am Native American and I grew up with Two Spirits being respected and considered touched by the spirits.
I just wondered if any other cultures or religions have a similar belief?
Tegarst: Thank You for the link.
Answer: I'm not familiar with the Two Spirits beliefs. I know that many eastern cultures are fairly neutral on homosexuality, as were many ancient cultures. Buddhism, Paganism, and Taoism are very neutral on homosexuality as well.
Question: Is it possible for a person to have two souls and two spirits in them? Can a person literally have two souls inside of them? It would be like two people in one body. Is that possible or is it Scripturally wrong? And if you say it is wrong, where exactly do you get that it is wrong?
The US Courts though do recognize that a person may have multiple personalities. And where in Scripture does it even discuss anything about 2 souls in a body?
Answer: You can only have one soul, but you can have many spirits within you(yes, they are two different things...soul and spirit).
Mat 12:43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.
Mat 12:44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
Mat 12:45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
Question: What do you know about Native American "Two Spirits"? This is so different. Give me some comments.
Yeah is weird.
Answer: The term "Two-Spirit" refers to a belief among some tribes that there are people who manifest both masculine and feminine spiritual qualities. According to Native American scholars, many tribes once revered Two-Spirits, viewing them as a third gender with a special spiritual connectedness. In these tribes, Two-Spirits filled important tribal roles as counselors, storytellers and healers.

Question: are there any two spirit people who are seeking friends? im 29 lakota native in nebraska and wanting to get to know others.thanks peace!
Answer: Kia ora, kiwi, NZ-born and bred. 44 young at heart. Look about 10 years younger than my chronological age. Close to my native lives.
Question: opinion on lifestyle of two spirits in one body (strictly theory)? if a body is inhabited by two spirits, one the original person and the other an invader, and they have lived just fine together for an exstensiveamount of time (5-10 years), who should decide what happens to the body in matters of phisical appearance (IE clothes, hair) and love life, or would there have to be a compromise?
Answer: I am thinking of this kind of like Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) where the person has two different persona's. Usually one will know about the other, but the other is in the dark and thinks they are sleeping while the other one has control.
In your theoretical example both persona's (or spirits) know each other, so they can actually talk it out.
I would say in the interest of promoting both existences they would have to compromise. However, since people are selfish and WANT what the want I think this is unlikely to happen. So reasonably the original occupant should get to keep and control the body.
But again people (and therefore their spirits) are major a-holes, so I think it would go to the stronger soul (or the one who could kick more ass). Morality has nothing to do with it, when it comes to our survival people are wicked.
Question: Are Jehovah's Witnesses suggesting their God has two spirits? I noticed how there is a "Spirit" and then there is a "spirit" in reference to Jehovah in this single sentence verse in the NWT...
2 Corinthians 3:17 (NWT) Now Jehovah is the Spirit; and where the spirit of Jehovah is, there is freedom.
The same Greek work pneuma was used in both instances where "Jehovah is the Spirit..." and "the spirit of Jehovah is...". But then I checked in the Watchtower Library CD for references to this verse, and I found some puzzling results to the Spirit/spirit of Jehovah...
1991 Spirits of the Dead p.7
The Bible tells us that there are many spirit persons. Jehovah is himself a spirit.—John 4:24; 2 Corinthians 3:17, 18.
Insight Vol.1 p.970
The true God is spirit, not flesh (Joh 4:24; 2Co 3:17), though he sometimes likens his attributes of sight, power, and so forth, to human faculties. Thus he speaks figuratively of his “arm” (Ex 6:6), his “eyes,” and his “ears” (Ps 34:15), and he points out that, since he is the Creator of human eyes and ears, he certainly can see and hear.—Ps 94:9.
This is strange, because it was never edited or corrected if this was an typo error. In this 2004 CD Jehovah is a spirit, not a Spirit in at least two articles, the ones I found so far in that CD.
And now the real puzzle begins in this NWT verse where Jehovah said "My spirit..."...
Genesis 6:3 (NWT) After that Jehovah said: “My spirit shall not act toward man indefinitely in that he is also flesh. Accordingly his days shall amount to a hundred and twenty years.”
I checked this in the Library CD also, and found this reference to this verse...
Insight Vol.2 p.1018
The expression “my spirit” (ru·chi´) used by God at Genesis 6:3 may mean “I the Spirit,” even as his use of “my soul” (naph·shi´) has the sense of “I the person,” or “my person.” (Isa 1:14; see SOUL [God as Having Soul].) He thereby contrasts his heavenly spiritual position with that of earthly, fleshly man.
So here we see "my spirit" instead of "My spirit", and since they never edited it to correct any errors, they can't make up their minds as to whether this spirit is a personal spirit (Spirit) or an impersonal spirit, or are they suggesting their God has both, and this Jehovah is a dual-spirited God???
Uncle Thesis...I knew this long ago, but my question is whether God is a personal Spirit, an impersonal spirit, or both???
Answer: Deceptive reasonings. The apostle Paul states: “Do not be carried away with various and strange teachings.” (Hebrews 13:9) What sort of teachings? Since they can ‘carry us away,’ it is clear that Paul refers to teachings that undermine our spiritual balance. Who are voicing such strange teachings? Paul told a group of Christian elders: “From among you yourselves men will rise and speak twisted things to draw away the disciples after themselves.” (Acts 20:30) Indeed, today as in Paul’s day, some individuals who were once part of the Christian congregation now attempt to mislead the sheep by speaking “twisted things”—half-truths and outright lies. As the apostle Peter puts it, they use “counterfeit words”—words that resemble truth but that are actually as worthless as counterfeit money.—2 Peter 2:3.

Question: Is love a union of two bodies or a union of two spirits? I already know the answer but I want to hear what you have to say.
Answer: I guess the answer is going to be universal, there`s only one real answer. The joining of bodies, as lovely as it is, can`t hold a candle to the uniting of spirits.
