Pretrial disclosure of pertinent facts and documents, including financial figures, by one or both parties.
Question: How is this seismic discovery important to us? Andrija Mohorovicic's discovery that waves traveling deeper inside the Earth arrived more quick than waves that traveling along the surface and the Mohorovicic Discontinuity. How are these discoveries important to us? What would have happened today if Mohorovicic never made these discoveries? Thanks for the help in advance. 10 points best answer!
Answer: The Mohorovicic Discontinuity (can I call it Moho?) marks the bottom of the Earth's crust and the top of the mantle. Studying the way waves travel when they hit the Moho gave scientists something like a sonar picture of the inside of the Earth. This helps them understand how the Earth works, how it's put together and, to some extent, what it's made of.
Science being what it is, if Mohorovicic had not discovered this discontinuity someone else would have very soon after. If no one today knew anything about this we would have very little understanding of the inside of the Earth. We would probably know something about earthquakes, but not very much.
Question: What abstract scientific discovery would lead to the greatest immediate benefit to humanity, and why? Please choose something that would be reasonably attainable, especially within the next 100 years. It could be a new discovery, or a valid theory to describe an existing phenomenon.
Also, if you can explain how we would get from the abstract discovery to the practical benefit, you will get extra consideration for the best answer.
Answer: The validation of Heim's theories. He was a German physicist who developed a Grand Unification Theory decades ago, but never published it. Only recently has his work made it outside of Germany, and steps are being taken to test his theory. It doesn't have a lot of support, since string theory is very popular nowadays. But string theory has it's problems and doesn't always add up-- Heim's theory, on the other hand, is the only theory capable of predicting the masses of the fundamental particles from first principles, and does so more accurately than string theory can predict those masses even accounting for evidence. Validation of his theory, which could happen by 2010, would open up a whole new realm of research. His theory proposes at least 6 dimensions, as opposed to the 11 of string theory, but most importantly offers us a way to get to those dimensions, giving us a practical faster-than-light engine. This requires the manipulation of the electromagnetic and gravitic forces, which is what scientists hope to test within the next few years. Such manipulation, if it proves to possible, would open the door not only to faster-than-light travel but to clean energy as well. It would revolutionize our understanding of the world on a level so fundamental it's difficult to imagine all the consequences. Heim would be on a level with Newton, Einstein and Hawking if he's proved right.
Then again, he could be proved wrong.
Question: How does the discovery of Teflon make people think of scientists? Since the discovery of Teflon was an accident, what does this make people think about scientists? Do they scientists don't really know what they are doing and just find things out by 'accident' ??
What do YOU think of scientists through the discovery of Teflon??
Answer: I suppose there are two types of research. Research for a specified purpose eg faster aircraft, drug to cure cancers, making longer lasting paint etc tend to be funded to do just that. Pure research, that is doing research to find or or make something for knowledge sake alone is more difficult as funds are less forthcoming. However this sort of research does also throw up unexpected disoveries ... Teflon being an example.People sometimes decry pure research as 'unneccesary'.
Doesn't this illustrate a valid point?
Likewise there are many natural chemicals... which may be useful.. in the plants of the rainforests. Pure research is still investigating the biology, ecology and chemistry of these regions... before selfish man breeds itself off the planet and destroys the lot!
Back to your question. Scientists generally know what they are doing, but there are classic incidents of when they weren't sure .. testing the first atom bomb in the US in WWII was a classic example .. they didn't really know how big/ dangerous etc the reaction would be.
Question: What is the most significant scientific discovery that contradicted a previously long held belief? Aside from the obvious "The world is flat" & evolution, what might be the most major scientific discovery or development (as far as its impact on society and the way we think about the world) that directly replaced or contradicted a long standing scientific "fact".
Answer: The transistor.
It is the one component that makes electronics possible, and therefore computers, mobile phones, GPS and programmable washing machines.
It's significance is that a quantum mechanical effect was used for the first time in a practical application.
Question: What would be the 21st century greatest achievement or discovery ? Let's supposed we are in 2099 today. What was the greatest achievement or discovery of this century ?
My guess : The discovery of intelligent extra-terrestrial lifeforms.
Your turn.
Maybe i should have mentioned, things relative to space and astronomy ;)
Answer: Well, I agree that intelligent extraterrestrial lifeforms will be in contact with us sometime in the next century.
Other great achievements (extrapolating from the achievements of the last century) likely to happen are:
1) The development of true artificial intelligence beyond human capability.
2) The alteration of the human genome to greatly lengthen life or actually induce immortality.
3) The production of nanites that will work inside the human body to forever wipe out disease and other ailments.
4) The creation of a unified world government that genuinely works toward the advancement and betterment of humanity.
5) The colonization of other terrestrial bodies within or beyond our own solar system.
Question: What is the difference between invention and discovery? A discovery is about truth, an invention is manufactured by you. It is man-manufactured fiction.
Answer: There is nothing factious about my computer and all it's components, they had to be invented before they could be manufactured.
Question: What is the difference between discovery and a deposition? In a civil suit what is the difference between Discovery and a Deposition?
Answer: Actually, depositions are part of the Discovery process. Discovery is merely investigation. You request documents and other evidence from the other side, and they have to give you whatever their state laws say they have to give you. (It must be consistent with Brady v. Maryland.) Depositions are witness interviews, conducted with both sides' attorneys, under oath and recorded. Depositions are part of the discovery process.
Question: How can I watch this Discovery Channel show without a TV or cable? I don't have TV or cable, but I hear that there's an excellent show called "Life" on the Discovery Channel. Is there a way to watch it online? No, I'm not shilling for them. I really just want to watch the show, and it seems to be only fragmentarily available on their website.
Answer: Try Hulu.com they show a bunch of shows there for free.
Question: What is the greatset discovery of all time? I want to know what mans greatest discovery is. I want to know on the basis of how it has changed the way the human mind thinks of this as a revolutionary discovery.
Answer: Fire.
Question: What is the greatest discovery in quantum physics? As I understand, quantum physics was discovered around a hundred years ago by Albert Einstein and Max Planck. As Im no physicist, but try to understand the best I can, what is the greatest discovery so far? and what discoveries can we expect from physics in the next hundred years?
Thanks for the links aaj.
Answer: Quantum theory has predicted many non 'classical' phenomena. Predictions include: -
Atomic and nuclear models
Lasers (DVD's etc)
micro electronics
Band Theory
Bose Einstein Condensates
Quantum Tunnelling
Diffraction of elementary particles
Quantum coherence
Unified weak and electromagnetic forces - electro-weak theory
Quantum electrodynamics
Quantum Chromodynamics
Relativistic electron quantum theory
Fermi-Dirac statistics
Einstein-Bose statistics
The Standard Model of elementary particle physics
An account of collapsed star cores (White dwarf's and neutron stars)
Antimater
The famous equation that first incorporated a representation of anti-matter was the Dirac equation, whicforecastst the 'positive electron'. The British physicist Paul A. M. Dirac formulated this equation in 1928, and it provides a description of elementary spin-½ particles, such as electrons, consistent with both the principles of quantum mechanics and the theory of special relativity. Moreover, this equation demands the existence of antiparticles and, furthermore, actually predated their experimental discovery. Hence, the equation made the discovery of the positron, the antiparticle of the electron, one of the greatest triumphs of modern theoretical physics. The equation may be written down as: -
.............3
(βmc² + Σα(k)p(k)c)ψ(x, t) = iħ∂ψ(x, t) / ∂t
............k = 1
Where 'm' is the rest mass of the electron, 'c' is the speed of light, 'p' is the momentum operator, 'ħ' is the reduced Planck's constant, and 'x' and 't' are the space and time coordinates.
The new elements in this equation, compared to the Schrodinger equation, are the 4x4 matrices 'α(k)' and 'β', and the four-component wave function 'ψ'. The matrices are all Hermitian and have squares equal to the identity matrix.
Carl D. Anderson discovered the positron in 1932, for which he won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1936. Anderson also coined the term positron.
Within 100 years there should be a quantum theory of gravity.
Question: How did James Watson contribute to the discovery of the structure of DNA? How did James Watson contribute to the discovery of the structure of DNA?
Answer: Well i know that he and Crick found out what DNA actually looked like, the double helix. I've never came across a question that doesn't have crick in it. They were partners. Their work was actually really shady and unethical. I've been told by many Biology professors that they stole a bunch of information from other scientists!
DUM DUM DUM!!!!
Hope this helped a weeee bit!
Question: What positive or negative contributions does the discovery of the neutron have on society ? How would this show evidence of global considerations ? How did the discovery of the neutron affected us ?
Answer: As the Neutron is neither positive or negative, it has no direct impact on society except that neutrons are present in all matter (material things), (except normal hydrogen).
However since its 'discovery' and the fact that it can be used in splitting atoms, the impact on the Global scale has been catastrophic (A-bombs) in some instances and a 'blessing ?', in others (Nuclear power).
Question: What discovery demonstrated that atoms are mostly empty space? It's Rutherford's theory but how do I explain the discovery?
Answer: The demonstration where radiation particles are shot into a gold page and most atoms stay in a straight line but a small fraction are deflected in all direction.
I think it was Ruthefords experiment
Question: What should a layman who has made a new scientific discovery do? Suppose I made a new scientific discovery. Now I'm only a university student and unlikely to be able to get it published in a journal. So as a layman what can i do to be able to establish my claim as being the first person to make this discovery?
Answer: First, research (extensively) to ensure that you, indeed, have made a new discovery--you will probably be surprised to find that you are treading on very old ground. But if you have, first, find a way to verify (experimentally) what you have discovered, if you can do so with equipment that is readily available. At some point, you will need to enlist the help of a professor. As long as you have written documentation of your idea (even if it isn't fully fleshed out), a professor will be able to engage in joint research with you, and her standing will allow the two of you two publish (that is, a year or two from now, once you get the formal work done). Note that you don't need to worry about being the "sole" creator. Science isn't done that way anymore--something like 85% of all journal articles are multi-authored, and the ones that aren't are generally review articles anyway. Once you have documented your work, find a professor who you think you can trust and start collaborating.
Question: How can we make money out of the discovery of the ACNE cure? Without selling a product or a book.
Which way would choose to get money from this discovery to search for other cures when you hate marketing or fundraising? How could we get honestly paid for our time and money invested in this project?
We would like to cash in to keep doing what we seem to be good at: reseaching.
Answer: Talk to companies who would use your research to create a final product. If this is something really good, I would also look to patent the idea so you don't lose all the hard work to the corporate companies. If it's something that really would sell, I'm sure they will negotiate a price/terms with you.
Question: What was the importance of the age of discovery and exploration? I need three reasons why the age of discovery was the most important movement of the Renaissance era. What impacts did it have on the world?
Answer: "Discovery" is the key word. The voyages of the age of discovery increased knowledge, brought new products, introduced cultures, opened new markets, etc. New challenges brought changes in maritime technology - improved navigation, shipping, and associated crafts. The expense - and potential rewards- of these complex ventures helped to spur the growth of corporate entities (there is a name for them - joint stock companies, I think, but check that for accuracy) that helped spread risk. Insurance, too. The huge increase in money brought about by the discovery of gold and silver in Mexico and Peru lead to major economic growth in Europe, which in turn allowed more exploration.

Question: What is your best cleaning tip / greatest cleaning discovery? I have to confess - cleaning has turned somewhat into a fetish for me! I am nesting as I'm about to have a baby so just reading about cleaning tips is exciting ha ha! Just wondering what the best cleaning tip you have is? Or your greatest discovery? I'm looking for more inspiration! Thanks
Trust me, cleaning shows on TV are like porn for pregnant women (well me anyway!). Hehe.
Answer: Baking soda for stove tops, pans, bake ware, definitely the only thing to use for cast iron pans, showers, tubs, sinks, tea stained plastic glasses or pitchers, basically any surface. Baking soda cleans without scratching the surface. Do not use with a scratch pad when cleaning a stove top. The baking soda will not scratch, but the scratchpad will scratch the paint on a stove top. I found out about baking soda after using a scratch pad when my stove was new. It didn't even take off the little specs that were burned on! Since then I only use baking soda and a dish cloth. It is remarkable how easily things can clean up with baking soda! It is even great to put a little on your toothpaste and brush your teeth. You will notice a difference in the clean feeling. It is not abrasive, and they use it in my dental office to clean teeth when getting a cleaning. You can add some to the shampoo in your hand when washing your hair. It will take off any build up from hair products and leave your hair squeaky clean.
You can use it in your laundry also. When my pastry cloth doesn't smell fresh after washing, I will wash it in the sink with baking soda, then rewash it and it is fresh again. It just gets things cleaned better than detergents alone.
Question: What are the similarities between the age of discovery and manifest destiny? Also, what are the similarities and differences between Marco Polo and the Mountain Men?
I am writing an essay about it, and I'm not really sure about either. I mean, the Age of Discovery was people trying to discover new lands and Manifest Destiny was when people were trying to own those new lands. Marco Polo and Mountain Men both traveled and explored. Honestly, on those topics, there's not much to write about, in my opinion.
Some help would be greatly appreciated (:
Answer: I have this exact same project due for my teacher :)
Mountain Men knew the land and would guide people through wilderness, they also asked for something in return most often supplies. Marco Polo was a traveler and a trader, who traveled the silk road from China to Europe.
so basically:
-both traded for goods
-both expanded in search of lands to travel and routes to discover
Age of Discovery was when Europeans explored the oceans searching for goods
while Manifest Destiny was when people wanted to expand towards the west.
so basically:
-searched lands
-expanded
you can see that the four topics all tie together, so in general the all expanded, traded, and explored.
Hope I helped.
Question: What is the difference between preliminary investigation and discovery? What is the difference between preliminary investigation and discovery? What impact does this difference have on a case and which is better to determine the facts of a case?
Answer: I'm assuming you are speaking about civil matters.
A preliminary investigation is something you do before you file the lawsuit - to determine whether or not there is grounds for a lawsuit. Results of a preliminary investigation can be kept from the opposing party under work privilege. You can talk to anyone. (Once a lawsuit is filed and the other person has a lawyer, you cannot speak directly to the opposing party.)
Discovery is the formal process that is conducted by both parties after the lawsuit is filed and can include Interrogatories, Requests for Production of Documents, Requests for Admissions, and depositions of parties and witnesses. The opposing party will know exactly what you are doing and what you are asking.
I love the preliminary investigation phase, but it is the formal discovery process that gives you the facts. (People and companies don't have to cooperate during a prelim investigation. The rules are much different during discovery.)
