Question: Am I able to write off Health Insurance Premiums for tax purposes at the end of the year? I am looking to purchase my own health insurance instead of going through my company. I know that the company takes out the cost on a pre-tax basis, but their insurance is not the greatest. If I do decided to sign up for health insurance, will I be able to use the cost of my own health insurance as a deduction fo tax purposes?
Answer: You may deduct qualified medical expenses you pay for yourself, your spouse, and your dependents, including a person you claim as a dependent under a Multiple Support Agreement. You can also deduct medical expenses you paid for someone who would have qualified as your dependent for the purpose of taking personal exemptions except that the person did not meet the gross income or joint return test.
You deduct medical expenses on Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF), Itemized Deductions. The total of all allowable medical expenses must be reduced by 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income. For more information, refer to Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses.
Question: What health insurance company is best for a child? I am looking for a good and reasonably priced health insurance provider for my 9 year old son. Insurance through my work is outrageous so I'm looking for an outside provider. His mother is suppose to have already put him on CHIP with the state of TX (by court order) but she refuses to do so for some reason. I hate the idea of him being without health insurance. Anyone had any good experiences with certain companies? Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Question: How to get health insurance for Dubai visit visa? Hi, I am planning to bring my husb and kid on visit visa. I heard that the health insurance is mandatory for visit visa. Where (or how) to get (or how to apply) this health insurance for vist visa. Please advice. Thanks.
Answer: Check your domestic health insurance (if any) and bank (if you have a "premium" type account); the might include travel insurance.
If not, try the people who you buy home/car/pet insurance from; they might offer you travel insurance at a reduced rate.
In the UK, the Post Office usually has the best deals on travel insurance, but I don't know how common this practice is in the rest of the world.
Question: What would happen to health insurance companies if government take over the health insurance system? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that Obama is trying to push a public health system that will allow everybody to have health insurance no matter what pre existing conditions he or she may have.
If this is reached, what would happen to insurance carriers like Blue Cross, Blue Shield? Will we need these companies and health insurance agents?
Answer: They would definitely shrink, but they would still be around. Look at Medicare, they have supplement polices which the individual has to pay. If you think the government is going to pay for Heart surgery, Cancer treatment, you're in for a rude awakening.
Question: How do health insurance premiums go down if private insurance is forced to cover preexisting illnesses? 99% of the claims made in favor of the house health care bill are outright lies. It is amazing that people believe these things. Explain to me how if private insurance companies are forced to cover people with preexisting illnesses and not allowed to discriminate on a variety of factors, costs go down.
Answer: The cost isn't going anywhere but up. Any rational person knows that, but this debate is fueled by emotion, not logic.

Answer: State health plans are often among the best coverage, least expensive plans around for kids. However, if that's not an option (as you've indicated), then check into an individual plan for your son. As you found out, putting him on your plan at work will probably give him pretty good benefits, but group plans usually assume that, on average, there will be 2.2 kids/employee; therefore, someone with 1 or 2 pays more while someone with 3 or more pays less (hey, that's how insurance works: it "averages" things out across a lot of people). However, by buying an individual plan for him you'll only pay for "his" coverage. Further, you'll be better able to get a less expensive plan that might be better suited to his actual needs.

Question: How can a government run health insurance entity "compete" with private companies? Will it pay taxes? It boggles my mind that the proponents of a government run health insurance entity would actual state that this entity would bring competition to the insurance arena. How would these private businesses compete with someone who does not have to pay taxes. How do companies compete with an entity that can literally raise taxes to pay for operational costs or an entity that is funded non voluntarily by the citizens of the United States? Can the private insurance companies pass legislation that changes the rules of the game in the insurance business? No but the government could certainly dictate the rules of their own business by passing legislation in its favor. Can someone please give me a logical reason as to how this government run health insurance option would do anything other than run private insurance into the ground to ultimately pave the way for the government to be the only health care option?
Answer: Nothing can compete with free. It's not very difficult. All these left-wingers that come up with all these theories about how it will force private companies to lower their standards is just BS. Why would anyone stick to a private health insurance plan when their tax dollars are already paying for another one?
Question: Are health insurance premiums that I pay and are deducted from my paycheck paid with after-tax dollars? My health insurance is through my employer but I have to pay part of the premium and it is deducted from my paycheck each pay period. I am filing my taxes and am being asked if the premiums are paid for with after-tax dollars. Any answers?
Answer: Premiums are tax deductable as a part of your medical expenses if you are filing long form. You add up every co-pay you made to doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions and the total cost you paid for these premiums and then you get a percent of that total back on your taxes. Anything that you paid for any type of health care is deductable as long as you have a receipt (or in the case of health premiums you pay) they are on the W2.

Question: What health insurance is best and affordable for my wife? We had a baby 3 months ago, but I am looking for health insurance that is good and affordable for my wife. Any suggestions?
Answer: Yea it sucks how our health-care system hasn't caught up yet. It makes me furious. Anyhow, I've heard Blue Cross/Blue Shield is good and I believe it's the most inexpensive. I had Cigna for a while and that was good. Health-Net is pretty good only if you don't have any pre-existing conditions otherwise they really raise the premium. Look into Eatna as well. I've heard there a little more pricier in comparison to the others but I've also heard that they seem to cover more.
Question: How to get alimony paid internationally deducted? I pay alimony (from the USA) to my ex-wife who lives in the Netherlands, to get the deductible I need a SSN on line 31 of form 1040. Since she is Dutch, she could apply for an ITIN (form W-7). Does this mean she will have to file a tax return? That would be unnecessary since the IRS only needs to know her nationality and that she receives the alimony.
How do I best solve this issue?
Your help/answers are greatly appreciated, thank you!
If I understand correctly:
I have to withhold 30% (and get this back later I presume?) unless she also files a completed W-8BEN.
To get the deduction on gross income her W-7, with divorce decree pages showing alimony, is enough.
So for me it would be best if she is willing to fill in both forms?
Thanks for the information!
I have already payed her alimony, so then she will have to file a 1042-S to get the 30% back over this time period?
I assume she has to do this separate for every year?
Answer: Are you aware that you *also* have an obligation to withhold 30% for taxes *before* giving the money to your ex-wife? This is to cover her tax bill on the money. Since you become responsible for paying it, she doesn't have to file.
While the Netherlands tax treaty causes the alimony to only be taxed by the Netherlands, you can't forgo withholding UNLESS she gives you a completed W-8BEN *with* an ITIN on it.
Because of the tax treaty, she can file the W-7 immediately with pages from the divorce decree showing the alimony.
*************
I have to withhold 30% (and get this back later I presume?)
If you are paying her $1000 in alimony, you withhold $300 and send it to the IRS.
If she gives you a completed W-8Ben (with ITIN after *she* submits a W-7 to the IRS), you stop the withholding on future alimony payments. The amounts you already withheld are refundable when she files. You would issue her a 1042-S showing the amounts you withheld and sent in. Then she files and requests a refund.
Question: He never paid Alimony? My father left my mom whe I was 4. He never paid alimony and my mom and I have lived a very poor life.
Now my mom has died, and I'm still very poor. Do you think I can go to court in order to male him pay?
He's very rich by the way.
Answer: He should. He is a sorry excuse of a man and get a attorney you need real legal advice!
Question: How do the courts decide if alimony will be paid in a divorce? My wife seems to think that just because she hasn't had to work for the past 8 years because my income supported us that a judge will award her alimony. She has had part time jobs on and off mainly just to keep her busy and to give her some extra mad money but had been lucky enough not to HAVE to work and be a stay at home mom. Before we married she held down several full time jobs so its not like she cant work, she chooses not to. Were about to divorce (DIVORCING IS HER CHOICE NOT MINE) and she wont try and find work because she says it will "mess her alimony up" when we go before a judge. My life is on hold and I dont want to even seperate until I know that she will be financially able to afford to live but child support doesnt pay for everything a woman with 2 kids has to have daily and I cant afford to pay for everything at home AND find a new house, etc without her taking at least SOME of the monthly bills.
Answer: First off, what happens when a marriage is dissolved is a matter of state law and you have not indicated what state you reside in. I presume you at least live in the US.
Second, most states have abolished alimony. They do award support to divorced spouses but for limited purposes--in most cases its called rehabilitative support--meaning that support will be awarded to the extent necessary until the weaker economic partner can become self-sufficient. That means you might be required to support her for a reasonable time until she finds work, if she needs skills that might include support for her education until she is fit for the workplace. It is limited in scope and in time. You may have to pay for a few years but not much more--this is not like child support where you will definitely have to pay for their support until they reach age of majority and you even may have to pay something toward college costs as well.
You should tell your wife to get up off her butt and get a job before a judge orders her to do so.
By all means hire a lawyer now.

Question: Do i have to pay alimony to my husband who was arrested for domestic abuse in Florida? Married 25 years.? About 15 months ago My husband was arrested for being abusive and was remove from the home. We have been married for 25 years. Have 2 minor children. He is currently unemployed and I am planning to do a pro se divorce. In florida do I have to pay for alimony if my husband was abusive?
Answer: An arrest is not a conviction, and since men get arrested when when they are the victims, it doesn't mean anything, so you should.

Question: Over how long is alimony usually paid out?
Answer: By a date specified in the divorce decree, and signed off by both the divorcing parties, or when the collecting spouse gets remarried.
Question: Do you have to pay alimony to someone who is in jail? If someone is indicted on several charges such as theft, and they go to jail, do you have to continue paying them alimony?
Answer: I see two options. First, go to the family court and ask for a modification of the divorce order based upon the changed circumstances, ie. the incarcerated person does not need your support as long as they are in jail.
Second, if that does not work, I would deposit the money into an account, either theirs or yours, and store it up for use when they get out.
My guess is that the alimony will be suspended until their release from jail.
Question: Is alimony or child support paid by the man required by law if the Mother and Father were never married?
Answer: If you have a child - you have to pay child support. Alimony is only for people who were married.
Question: When you divorce, do you have to pay alimony to the other person with a lower income? or you only have to pay if someone is really struggling? Can you disagree to alimony if you don't want to pay the other person?
Answer: If an agreement cannot be worked out between the two parties the matter will be put before the court for the judge to decide. In my experience the alimony is usually only ordered if there is a significant income difference, the relationship was long term, and the higher income was achieved with the assistance/support/sacrifice of the lower income person, such as one spouse supporting the other while they earned their high paying degree, or built a business, etc. I've known a few people who chose to pay alimony rather than divide their assets, particularly in the case of a business owner.
Question: Will adopting two childern change the alimony I am paying? My new wife and I are finishing the adopting two children (under 18) and I am paying alimony to my ex. All the other children we have are adults. Will the adoption allow me to have the alimony I now pay modified or eliminated?
From the first response I guess it appears that we are adopting to get out of alimony - that is not the case. My wife started the process with her late husband and is now finishing it with me. Just asking if I can get the alimony lowered.
All our current children are adults - over 25. These two children that we are adopting are my wife's sister's grandchildren.
Answer: Unlikely, since the cost of raising these two children is a financial obligation you've voluntarily taken on knowing you had alimony payments to make. It's a change in circumstances, but not one you couldn't avoid-- not like a natural disaster destroying your home, a lost job, a debilitating injury, etc. You knew the financial ramifications and still decided to adopt. You can't just reduce your alimony payments on the basis that you prefer to spend your money on something (or in this case someone) else, or no one would pay alimony at all.
Talk to a lawyer, though. It might, if having biological children would in your state, since the status of legally adopted child is the same in the eyes of the law. It's worth asking a professional. I just don't think you should get your hopes up.
Question: if i remarry and my ex husband agreed to pay alimony for half the marriage am i still entitled to alimony? My ex husband and i didn't go through the court system when we divorced. He signed and had something notarized agreeing to pay me alimony for half the time we were married. I have remarried and now he thinks he doenst have to continue to pay. In this promissary note it does not say alimony will cease if i remarry it just say i agree to pay alimopny in the sum of 1,200 dollars for the next 37 months period. Does he still have to adhere to our agreement?
Answer: Number one I don't know how you got a REAL divorce without going through the court system, but that's not your question.
I'm a retired atty and have read some of the other comments. I think they are hung up on the use of the word alimony. Normally, in a divorce decree IF alimony is awarded it stipulates the alimony will cease upon the marriage of the party receiving the payments. But in your case the document you referenced was not a divorce decree issued by a court. If in the promissory note the word alimony was used it MAY be interpreted to impose the same type of termination. However, that would certainly be worth pursuing. If that word is not used no court I'm aware of would let him off the hook.
Go to an atty and let him/her look over the note. Depending on how much time is left it may or may not be worth your time or the atty's to go after him. You will have to pay the atty up front.
