Home Study
A home study is sometimes called an "adoption study," and is a written report containing the findings of the social worker who has met on several occasions with the prospective adoptive parents, has visited their home, and who has investigated the health, medical, criminal, family and home background of the adoptive parents. If there are other individuals that are also living in the home of the adoptive parents, they will be interviewed and investigated, if necessary, by the social worker and included as part of the home study. The purpose of the home study is to help the court determine whether the adoptive parents are qualified to adopt a child, based on the criteria that have been established by state law.
Question: Home study? I work full time and am currently studying for accounting qualifications. How do you find the time to fit studies in with social/home life? Is it better to do an hour every night, or set aside 2 or 3 nights a week for dedicated study?
Answer: I am currently doing my ACCA qualification whilst studying full time. Try to do some work each day even if its just half an hour just to keep what you are doing fresh and set aside a longer period 2 or 3 nights a week where you can do a longer period of work and have time to revise what you have learnt as well.
Question: home study? if some one is a senior in high school and is on home study how and who gives them the test to see if they grauate and don't they still have to pass all the tests and what if the person has an IEP how does that work
Answer: If you're on an IEP and it spells out any accomodations for testing, then you legally have to receive them. If you are doing homebound studies through your school district, then most likely your teacher/tutor will administer them. It could *possibly* be the school's psychologist also. You may, or may not, take them at home - it may be at the school.
Question: Is a home study course in Animal management as good as the same qualification from a college like Sparsholt? I want to get into a career in animal management, but haven't got the time to study at a college because of my job. Would an advanced diploma from the national home study college be as good as say a diploma from Sparsholt. Would any employer actually except qualifications from home study courses?
Answer: I would call two or three potential employers in your area and see what they have to say. I do wish you well.
Question: What is the fastest home study course to get black belt? I am trying to find the quickest home study course that offers black belt, I am doing a survey study.
Answer: LOL...haaaahhhhaaaa....thanks I needed a laugh on Friday :)
Although I do not and would not endorse and crappy internet teaching program or curriculum I would give you an idea that the Tracy's Kenpo home study course is probably the fastest I have ever heard of. They charge an arm and a leg, let people skip belts and I know of five people over the last 31 years of my real studies that got black belts in less than a year from them through home study.
In your survey you may want to include that it is one of the dumbest decisions a person can make to learn without an actual instructor as well.
Question: How do you find a reputable home study agency? We are looking to adopt and need to do a home study. Just wondering where to find and how to evaluate. We had a friend who adopted and wound up getting ripped off by their home study agency.
Answer: I found mine through the adoption attorney we were working with. They are usually pretty knowledgeable about who is out there and how good they are, since most people report back to them at some point about how their home study went. If by chance you are in PA, send me an email and I can recommend an excellent one. If not, best of luck!
Question: What is the best home course company to study with is it ics or open university? i want to study a course and i want to know what would be the best home study company to go with.
Answer: It depends on what you want? If you want university level courses, then the Open University is very good - although very expensive!
If you want GCSE's, A Level, NVQ, or similar, then your best option would be to look for non-home learning courses such as local college's or local adult learning centres. I use to work in further education and also for an organisation researching training oportunities in the UK. With this experience and knowledge, I cannot recommend any home learning organisation for courses at these levels, and heres why:
The distance learning providers charge between £300 and £700 for their GCSE or A Level courses, two or three times more than most local authorities.
You may not get much support from these distance learning organisations and the course material they send out is no different to a book you can buy in the shops for less than £20.
The worst thing about them is that none of them are registered exam centres and will tell you in the small print that you should find your own exam centre and register with it. This is virtually impossible to do because most exam centres will only register and enter people for exams if they are doing the course with them. No GCSE distance learning provider is obliged to make sure you complete the course, and there are no statistics to show just how many people do actually get to exam stage with their courses, let alone whether they pass them or not. With these distance learning providers the situation is that if you can't find an exam centre, it's your problem.
It is therefore my opinion that 99% of the GCSE or A Level home/distance learning courses in the UK are no good and if there is 1% that is good (just incase there is), I cannot find it!
The Open University is a good source of distance learning, but they only do university level courses, not GCSE or A Level. I wish they did do GCSE and A Level courses, because they would clean up - everybody would use them.
Hope this helps.
Question: What exactly does a home study consist of? I was just wondering how exactly a home study is done and who has to get one. What happens during one?
Answer: Home studies are required for foster and adoptive families---those seeking to foster and/or adopt. They are done by a social worker who comes to your home and has tons of paperwork to go through
with you. She will do a walk through of your home to see that you have enough room, she will measure the bedroom/s you plan on using for the foster/adopt child. She will advise you on needed training, will tell you where you can be fingerprinted[everyone13 yrs of age or older in your home].
You will need to provide references, background checks will be done[both state and federal],physicals for everyone in your family, where you work and how much you make. We were not asked about religion. This all varies from state to state. You will need smoke detectors and a CO2 detector.
This applies to my state.
Question: For anyone who took a home study course? I would like to have home study on certificate on animal care... I had never done this before but I am wondering if it worth it having a home study? I have a young son and I have no one to babysit if I go to college, anyway, if you have home study, is it worth it? What are you studying?
Answer: Look into childcare at the community college near you. They may even offer it to students for their children at a discount.
I would think some component of the animal care home course would involve working hands on at a vet's office to get experience, but that is just a thought.
Question: Has anyone taken a home study program and went out and gotten a job from it? I received information from Penn Foster home study program and was wondering has anyone used them before? What program did you study and did they help you to find a job? Is it worth it?
Answer: Yes,, years ago I studied brain surgery with home study...I then went into practice upon graduation and my first patience was G. Bush...ummm well it wasn't exactly a success but Iam still trying..
Question: How to find a social worker to do home study for adoption? The child is in TX and we are in NJ. We are in process to adopt him. The social worker in TX can't schedule to do home study within this month but we really want it to be done soon. Where and who could we seek for help?
Answer: Just go on bing maps and type in adoption agency in New Jersey. You have a couple to choose from. I see "Family Children's services" in Elizabeth. There is another one on the west side of the state.
Question: What takes place during a home study to adopt a baby? my friend lives in Brownsville , TX. She's trying to adopt her neice and she is going to undergo a home study. What takes place? or how hard is it to pass?
Answer: My friends adopted a little girl who is now 8 right when she was born. They had to clear all the legal hurdles and stuff before they were able to get her.
They told me the home study was actually one of the easier parts. There will be background checks and financial checks, just to be sure that your friend can handle having a child, but that is separate from the home visit. Here are the things my friends told me they looked at on the home visit:
Location and size of the home, meaning is it in a safe neighborhood (no one dealing drugs right outside the front door), and is there enough room for the little one to have a bedroom and room for her toys.
Upkeep of the home, meaning does everything work. Does the heating system work so the house doesn't get too cold in the winter? Do the toilets work? Does the bathtub work and not leak? Just general maintenance stuff.
Cleanliness of the home. It doesn't mean you have to be Martha Stewart and have a perfectly decorated home. What they are looking for is a clean and wholesome environment in which to raise the child. Is there moldy stuff all over the shelves in the refrigerator? Is there dog pee or poop all over the place? They just want to make sure it's a clean environment. Things like old mismatched furniture or really used sofas and stuff don't matter, as long as they aren't of danger to a child. If there's a huge spring sticking up out of a sofa, that's a problem. If the sofa is just 20 years old, that's okay. They just want a decent environment.
One of the things they will probably want to know is whether or not the little one will have her own room and the appropriate furniture, like a crib or toddler bed. They will want to know if there is an area in the home where she can play safely and have her toys. Also, they will look for dangerous things like electrical outlets without plates on them, or electrical items with burned cords, or rooms without smoke detectors.
Your friend may also be asked about the schools in the area, but it sounds like the baby is too young for school, so that shouldn't be an issue.
My friends told me that it's pretty easy to pass as long as you keep your home neat and have enough room for a baby. As I said earlier, you don't have to have some super fashionable or expensive home. You just need a clean home which is safe for an infant. I know they prepared for theirs by buying a baby gate for the stairs and those little plugs you stick on outlets so babies cannot stick their fingers in them. They also got those baby latches and put them on their cupboards and stuff. Basically, they baby-proofed the home in advance.
I think your friend should be fine. I do think the preparation stuff, as in the baby-proofing stuff is a good idea. It isn't expensive, but it shows that she is serious about the safety of the child.
I wish your friend all the best, and I hope things go well. Every baby deserves someone who wants them and loves them.
Question: is a home study for custody in tx the biggest impact on a judge? My son has had custody of his 7 year old daughter since 2004. She has lived with him since she was 6 months old. Mother did not want to raise her and now wants custody. They have already gone through the home study and are waiting on results. How much will it bear on the judge or jury's decision?
Answer: The answer above mine is not well-thought out. A home study will have a lot of weight. A judge will definitely consider all of the facts surrounding your granddaughter's upbringing. He will look to see if her needs can be met in her dad's home, and if it is a safe environment for her. If it didn't matter much, then they wouldn't waste the money doing the studies.
As far as what a 7 year old child wants, although the judge may consider it, nobody is stupid enough to consider a child's desire over the safety and stability in a home. What 7-year old doesn't want to be with a more lenient, less rule-driven, "cooler" home? Unless she's saying there's some sort of abuse, her wishes won't come into play much.
Question: What questions might a social worker ask in a home study that could feel intrusive? A home study for fostering a child, if that makes a difference.
Just something I read on a website and I'm wondering just how personal the questions get.
Answer: I am single. So, the questions that "could feel intrusive" were ones like these:
Why do you want to adopt a child now?
How will a child affect your single life and dating?
Do you ever plan on getting married?
How will you have a positive male role model for your child?
All of these things were fine for me to answer because as I came to my decision to adopt, I thought about all of them already, on my own. It did seem a little nosey- but I was adopting a child... they need to ask these things.
And honestly, those questions haven't been THAT different then people on the street and friends being curious about my adoption process. STRANGERS ask some really probing questions that are none of their business!
As a parent, it is up to me to be able to handle those issues and teach my child how to handle issues relating to the questions he'll get as he grows up.
My social worker even asked my sister if she had a phobia of flying like I did!?!? What did that have to do with anything?
I hope this helped. :-)
Question: How do I get a home study for adoption in Korea? I've contacted 18 agencies . . . all the agencies at my home of record in the states. I am in the military in Korea. I will probably not return to my home of record in the states for another decade or so. The family center and community services center both say that they no longer have social workers who can do home studies in Korea. As of 2006, Korean law requires that US citizens use a US based agency to adopt, that I cannot adopt through a Korean service over here. How can I find a social worker who can do a home study?
Answer: my dad was stationed in Korea for a year... although we never discussed this particular thing? military (the way I was raised) takes care of their own...! it is how I was raised, what I know... my father CO was who he would talk about as who he went to for answers or things that needed doing... and if he had no answers?(which was usually the case ;) he would be able to point my father in the right direction..... your base resources "should" be able to assist better even than the embassay....
good luck
Question: Are there any decent home study electrician courses that actually give you recognised qualifications? I want to become an Electrician but can't afford to leave my current job. Are there any home study courses which give you recognised electrical qualifications that will actually allow me to become an Electrician at the end of them?
Answer: Electrician is a broad term that includes many different job descriptions. ie maintenance, construction, service, industrial, commercial, residential. All with different requirements of knowledge and experience.
There are many good home study schools that offer an associates degree, that when added to some hands on experience in the chosen field will get you started in the right direction.
Retired industrial construction and maintenance electrician

Question: How much is legal representation for an adoption? How much is a home study and where do you get one? We found a website that does everything other than legal fees and home study. Is it a good option to go through an agency and then get your own legal representation?
The ageny is Lifetime.
Any information would be helpful. Please be kind with your words.
Thank you! :)
Answer: I don't know what state you live in, but in California, there are law firms that specialize in adoptions. In our case, the adoption was private (a distant family member) and uncontested. I also happened to a neighbor of one of a principal of such a law firm. They charged a flat $1,500 fee for their services.
The CA state filing for adoption was about $3k. That covers just about everything, including the home study. Other expenses include background and criminal checks and fingerprinting.
I'd recommend getting a law firm first and they may be able to direct you to a good agency.
Question: What do people think of home study martial arts? Are home study martial arts a legit way to learn them if there is not a dojo near you?
Answer: well you can learn at home, through a book or internet......some one began without an instructor. so its possible.
Question: How reliable are home study courses? After 3 years in an agricultural college, i am looking to broaden my horizons & aim to study a Higher Education course in Animal Management/Welfare. I am curious to know whether courses recommended by home study groups, such as the OCN (Open College Network) are reliable & do you gain recognised qualifications? Is it likely to cost more than a general college course in the same field, due to external correspondence etc?
Thanks for your answers. I will take a look at the listings.
Answer: it's always hard when thinking about correspondance courses to know if they are nationally recognised.
Have a look at the site below, a database of all nationally recognised qualifications [UK] so should give you some help. If you type in animal managemenr it will list all courses available matching or similar.
OCN is a recognised exam board, certainly they offer a wide variety of courses that may suit your needs.
Question: How long do you think a home study will take? Trying to adopt a special needs child who is in foster care right now. Wondering how long the home study will take.
Answer: Are you talking about the whole adoption process, or just the homestudy? The homestudy is when a social worker comes to your house for an interview, and it takes maybe a few hours. Ours was done in two separate sessions of maybe an hour or two each. Once the interview part was finished, the social worker typed it up, sent it to her supervisor for review, and we were approved for adoption about 2 weeks later. So, from the beginning to the end of the homestudy (i.e. from the first visit from the social worker), it took about 3 weeks.
If you're talking about the whole process, that depends on how fast you complete your paperwork, how soon you can take the classes, how soon you can get your homestudy done, and how soon you're matched with a child. If you already have a child in mind, you could probably finish the whole process in a few months. It took us about 8 months (including the homestudy) from the day we made the first phone call.
Since we got approved, we've been waiting a little over a year and a half, but the wait time varies widely. Most people I know wait about 8 months once they're approved.
