Question: How to locate information on a missing person back in 1930's?
It is my Grandfather, his background is sketchy and his brother was in and out of jail for forgery. Story's were told that he would bring men home in suites that were carrying guns. So I am sure he has a questionable background as well. He lived in Ohio in the 30's.
Answer: Census records would be a good place to start, but the last census release is 1930. The 1940 census doesn't come out until 2012. Maybe check the 1930 census of his close family or friends, see if that leads him out of Ohio. The 1930 census might tell you which county your Grandfather lived in. Try to find if your Grandfather did time in any of the surrounding states. Maybe look at john does, see if any match his description. I hope this helps you a little, good luck.

Question: How do you locate information regarding court cases? How do you know if a particular case was ever filed and or won or lost in a court of law?
Answer: It really depends on whether you need federal case information or state case information. It also might depend on whether the case was the subject of a written opinion by the court or not. Prominent ("important") cases are usually the subject of these public, written opinions. A local law school librarian should be able to help you locate whatever materials may exist on any published cases. If you think that the case may have been tried in the state or federal courts in your area, you may need to visit the clerk of the court or the records department in that courthouse. They will ask you potential party names and should be able to search for any such materials in their database. If you are lucky, they will be computerized and the search won't take long. Otherwise, it could take quite some time. Be forewarned--any information for which you require a copy will probably cost you more than you might expect, and some cases (i.e., sealed records and those cases involving minors) may not be available to the general public.
