Ethnocentrism
The feeling or belief that one's own cultural patterns are superior to all others. This results in the interpretation of other people in terms of one's own cultural values and traditions. An example is people from monogamous societies condemning polygamy as being "unnatural" and immoral. Ethnocentrism is universal and normal but not necessarily morally defensible or desirable because it prevents understanding other cultures. It also interferes with meaningful intercultural communication.
Question: What is the site where old oceanic lithosphere begins its descent? What is the name that marks the site where old, oceanic lithosphere begins its descent into a subduction zone? I forget what its called and its bothering me!
Hey earth man! Thanks for answering but I still need an answer. Today our geology teacher asked: A(n)______marks the site where old, oceanic lithosphere begins its descent into a subduction zone. This question was part of our lab but my partner and I couldn't answer it and I have the lab in front of me and its due at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Thanks!
Answer: A convergent boundary, subduction zone style, in a deep sea trench.
The answer is just "subduction zone." I have never heard of an area where crust begins a descent into another descent.
Question: How do we tell and know who is of Black African Descent when many Dravidians of India and Sri Lanka, the Negri? How do we tell and know who is of Black African Descent when many Dravidians of India and Sri Lanka, the Negritoes of the Philippines and Indonesia, the Melanesians of Polynesia and New Guinea, and the Aborigines of Australia have black skin ? Would ancestry genetic testing be able to tell ?
Answer: I suppose either that ,or DNA.
Question: I do have a Special Identity Card For Aliens Of Hellenic Descent.I am in Albania. How can I get Australian Visa? I do have a Special Identity Card For Aliens Of Hellenic Descent.I am in Albania. How can I get a Visa for Australia ? Is it difficult for me ?
Answer: I assume you would need a passport in order to get an Australian visa, the card you speak of basically allows you to be a resident of Grece but does not certify Greek citizenship. I do not believe Australia will issue a visa or allow you entry based on the card.
In theory I believe you are a citizen of Albania and need an Albanian passport to get a visa.
However, there do seem some contradictions in what I found in researching this. IT appears that the card is issued when one has at least one Greek grandparent; and that seems to be the qualification needed to become a citizen either by proving decent or by naturalization for someone who is a permanent resident (as I think the card makes you, but this is law and legal issues can be complex.).
So the easy answer is, if you are a citizen of another nation, get their passport and apply for a visa.

Question: People of Asian descent please answer!: How is it that most Asian children are extrememly well behaved? People of Asian descent please answer!: How is it that most Asian children are extrememly well behaved? I am not trying to be stereotypical it is just that I rarely see anyone who is of Asian descent with an unruly child and would like some tips. My son is 16 months old. Do you punish or spank your children? What other means of discipline do you use?
Answer: I'm not Asian but my hubby and in-laws are. They are taught very strongly to respect their parents. I observed an interaction between my SIL and her son once - she had to speak to him about his behavior and while she did she held a stick in her hand. I found out that she used that stick once and only once but each time she needed to discipline him she always had the stick to remind him of it. That is one thing I have seen.
Also, they are very attached to their children when they are young - they breastfeed into the preschool age and co-sleep forever. When the mother is with her children, she dotes on them and make sure they have everything they need. Children learn at a young age that they are very important to their parents. My husband's biggest fear when he was younger was to disappoint his mother. Not because she would hurt him but because he knew how much she did for him. I see this also in his older nephews - they are in their upper teens and 20s and still are afraid to hurt their mother for all she has done for them.
Question: How did supposedly recessive genes become dominant among people of northern European descent? If blond, red, and light brown hair and blue, green, grey and hazel eyes and light skin are recessive, how did they become so common among those of European descent? Did geography play a role in this adaptation? Perhaps due to climate that is colder and more cloudy most of the time they developed less pigment in their skin, hair and eyes?
Answer: dominance or recessiveness have nothing to do with what is selected, it only affects expression in the individual, this can be a tough concept to get, but basically if a gene is recessive it doesn't mean its better or worse than the alternative genes out there, it could be either. Recessive/dominant doesn't mean rare/common.
Question: Are apple trees that difficult to grow and get descent fruit? I have been interested in planting a few apple trees in my yard. I my research I have become disheartened by all the work that seems to go into growing and producing descent apples. Is it possible to harvest nice apples without spraying chemicals? Can I not just keep the trees healthy and practice good cultural habits and get descent fruit? I am interested in planting a 'Cameo' apple tree. Anyone have experience with this variety or have any luck with other varieties?
woops I mispelled decent
Answer: http://www.yourbackyardgarden.com/Cameo_Apple_Tree.html
nice apple!.... cross of red and yellow delish?... yummy!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameo_(apple)
it all depends on what you consider 'decent' apples.... if you don't mind a worm or two, a brown spot, dealing with bugs.... then, sure, it's easy.... but if you want a near-guarantee of a good harvest of fruit you could sell , then you'll need to do the work.... there are alternatives to some of the chemical sprays, but you'll need to contact your County Extension Service office and get help on that from them... it's free and you'll do well to use them as much as possible for needed info....
note.... this site...
http://www.naturehills.com/product/cameo_apple.aspx
shows Cameo requiring a pollinator.... and they suggest two, at the bottom of the page.... clik on 'pollinator required' to see what they say.....
Question: How to find out my nationality descent? From the research I have done, it turns out that my surname is of either German or Scandinavian descent? This suggests it is possible that I could be of a descent of Germany or one of the Scandinavian countries. How would I go about finding out of what descent I am - I know there are genealogy sites but is there a direct way of finding this out as I am having little luck with my searches.
Thanks in advance.
Answer: Your name is not how you research your ancestry... and before you launch into websites and get fed up because you can't find what you are looking for, or more likely don’t know what to look for, do your groundwork first.......
Look on this site, it will help you make a start in understanding the principles of researching your family history http://www.familytreefolk.co.uk/page_110… , also www.bbc.co.uk is another good website that will give you all the information to get you started, search for heir hunters or family history.
Down load family history sheets http://www.mcpl.lib.mo.us/genlh/forms/ & starting with yourself fill one in. You will find the sheets act as a check list you may also find that you don't have all your own information & have to go searching in your home and asking your parents/other relations about it, look for any certificates, baptism cards, wedding invitations, newspaper clippings and any other papers which can give you information, we all have these and most are put away and forgotten about.
Look at your own birth certificate, it gives you lots of information & don’t forget to write the registration number from it down on your form, as this tells you that it is primary document information, which is what you need for every piece of information you collect, once you start researching you will notice that many people don’t have primary information numbers on their research...which shows you it is hearsay, copied from others , from websites and guesswork and there is no place in family history research for guesswork. One wrong name in your tree and it means you are not researching YOUR family and it is so easy to get it wrong without looking at documentation.
Fill a sheet in for your parents /any living relations you have, go & talk to them, ask to see any certificates they have, write all the information down they give you, just from a marriage cert you will get both names including the maternal name, where they lived, married the date, their fathers names, occupations & names of witnesses...also if the bride/ groom could read & write at that time as if there is an x in the signature box they could’t, which also then helps you later on looking at other records should you find different spelling of their name.....ask if they have any old photographs as this gets people talking and remembering other people in the family they had ‘forgotten’ about...write down any 'family stories' you are told, it is all part of your family’s history and culture....some may be correct, however many are not or have some truth in them and different people in your family will tell you different versions of the same story, you find once you start researching you can sometimes use these stories in your research for clues about where to look at records...........before you go near a website, this information give you a 'feel' for who your family is and makes it s much easier to find ancestors once you do start looking at websites
By using the family sheets it makes it very easy for other relations to see what you are doing & to understand the information you are collecting, they are more likely to help & give you more information....as most at first will say, “I don't know or I haven't got any idea about our ancestors". It is also nice to be able to give you relations a copy, as by doing this they will look at the information, talk about it and may remember more information for you or even find some paperwork that has been long forgotten. I very often leave these sheets with family & tell them to add information if they remember, the more family you ask the better, this information is first hand information, most family historians regret not having asked these questions of older family members once they realise how valuable their knowledge could have been, however many often leave it too late to ask .
The very best sources of information is in your home memories of your living relations, any documents, certificates and newspaper clippings that many people keep....you will get lots of information, start lots of interest in what you are doing and will get your family involved in helping you get started and are more likely to have correct information
If you want a computer database a free one is Brothers Keeper http://www.bkwin.net/version6.htm and you can even add photographs, print out family trees, lists or add notes/stories etc
Once you have done all this you will be more aware of who your family is, you get a ‘feel’ for who is family and who is not & websites are easier to look at then as you can cross reference the information you have...
Many will tell you www.familysearch.org or the LDS pilot website, it does have some good information, it also has lots of donated, unverified information which is completely wrong from people who have copied other‘s family trees & sent it in
Good luck in your research

Question: Give an example of ethnocentrism found in research? Give an example of ethnocentrism found in research or that you can imagine might arise in commonly recognized research, such as what is presented in the news. Explain the issues and why they arise.
Answer: Recently there were some articles circulating the web about color, mood and meaning. Researchers had studied clothing colors that people wore in the workplace and found those, particularly women, who wore certain colors (white, blue) were more successful and thought to be more reliable than those who wore "non-trustworthy" colors (red, black, green). This is definitely the result of western research. In Asia, white is the color used for death. Red is seen as highly desirable. A woman who wears a red blouse to work in China, for example, is viewed as smart, savvy and respectful toward her boss. (Red means you will earn money).
Question: What is the difference between ethnocentrism and culture shock? Examples would be helpful too.
Answer: Ethnocentrism is believing your culture is ferior to another person's culture and culture shock is an uneasy feeling that occurs when exposed to cultural variation.
Ethnocentrism could be someone from America looking down on people in India for they way do certain things.
And culture shock would be me going to India and feeling like I'm in a completely different world.
Question: What is ethnocentrism and what role did it play in Germany during World War II? I'm writing a research paper about propaganda in WW2 on both American and German soil. If you know anything about ethnocentrism in propaganda in Germany it would really help me. Thanks so much!!! (:
Answer: Germany fore bade anyone from even listen to foreign radio, shutting off their peoples ability to even judge other races. Their propaganda machine was insane! People could be punished for holding a certain opinion.
One example of this, is the children's book: Der Giftpilz (google it) describing what physical features a Jewish person has.
Of special interest is Eugenics. This cousin of evolution gave people like Hitler all the justification to slaughter and sterilize so called inferior races. It was also popular in the United States for a while. Where many hundreds of thousands of people were sterilized. Funny we dont hear much about it anymore.
Question: Help with a thesis statement for ethnocentrism? I'm having writers block! I need a stable thesis on my paper for ethnocentrism. Should I start off asking a question? Or just giving the definition of ethnocentrism (I have to define the concept in the first paragraph anyways) Any ideas?
Answer: you can start with a an anecdotal form/historical approach of introduction. you can use the story of the greatest ethnocentric revolution done by Hitler. He displayed so much ethnocentrism over the jews that genocide was written down into history. you can start of with this, you can state that ethnocentrism during those time (world war) actually started the killing of millions of people and nearly ended the world.
i hope this helps, love lots! :)
Question: What do you think is the impact of ethnocentrism in the United States? The world? Also, do you think you would be unhappy living in another area of the United States or world do to cultural differences?
For example, if you live in the southern part of the US, would you not like living in the north because of these differences?
Answer: Sometimes moving from one part of the US to another part can be rattling. In some sense it's the same culture, but the differences really get to you. As an East Coaster moving to the West Coast can be eye opening.
------
On the other hand moving to a completely different culture can be exhilirating. You don't expect it to be the same, and you really enjoy the differences. I very much enjoy Southern Mexico which has a radically different culture than Northern Mexico.
------
The advantage anymore is that you can experience different cultures without leaving northern America. Miami is the only major city in the world, that has more people living there that were born in another country, than the home country. Toronto is now probably the most multicultural city on the planet (with New York a close second). In Europe, Inner London now has about a million (out of 2.8 million) foreign born residents. Parts of Paris look like a Northern African city.
Question: What are some some examples of ethnocentrism and stereotyping regarding Native Americans? as a native American do you feel wronged by what happened to your ancestors?
Im writting a paper and would like some opinions. thanks.
Answer: i feel wronged by what is happening today. our lands are being stolen still and others are being polluted by big corporations.

it seems only non natives have the luxury of dwelling on the past. we are too busy trying to survive the present war on indigenous people.
Question: where did ethnocentrism originate from? I need info on the historical roots and theorists associated with ethnocentrism.
Answer: Ethnocentricity is the tendency to look at the world primarily from the perspective of one's own culture
Ethnocentrism is a natural result of the observation that most people are more comfortable with and prefer the company of people who are like themselves, sharing similar values and behaving in similar ways.
This term was coined by William Graham Sumner (1840-1910), Anthropologists such as Franz Boas and Bronislaw Malinowski argued that any human science had to transcend the ethnocentrism of the scientist
books The Sexual Life of Savages, by Malinowski, Patterns of Culture by Ruth Benedict and Coming of Age in Samoa by Margaret Mead (two of Boas's students)
Question: what would be the social ramifications of ethnocentrism? what would be the social ramifications of ethnocentrism?
Answer: As opposed to racism there would be little social ramification.
We are all ethnocentric to a degree.
That doesn't make us all blatant racists That would definitely have a deleterious effect on society.
Question: What are some examples of ethnocentrism? I need like specific examples in the world going on today. I know what it means but my teacher needs specific examples between two countries over a particular conflict. Help please?
Answer: Believing that your religion is better than others.
Question: Explain the good and bad of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism.? Ethnocentrism and cultural relativism can have positive and negative impacts on a group. Explain the good and bad of each.
Answer: Ethnocentrism would have a negative impact on the group because one who is ethnocentric would assume that their culture is the best and that everyone else's is inferior or of less importance. That can cause problems in a group of people who are from different cultures. With cultural relativism one assumes that everyone else knows of their culture so that can cause issues with people being misunderstood in the assumption that they know every detail about your culture. Take for example some cultures may find it polite that people shake hands where as others may see it as disrespectful.
The good out of Ethnocentrism would be that the person who is ethnocentric treating everyone the way that they would want to be treated depending on their cultural beliefs. If that culture has good beliefs then that would make that person treat everyone around them well. For example if based on ones culture that you feed people who enter your home, that person will present a meal for each individual who comes into their home which most would see as very generous. I think that the good with cultural relativism would be roughly around the same thing. There is a thin line that separates the good and the bad with these two terms.
Question: Do you believe ethnocentrism is a serious obstacle to fighting international crime? Why or why not? What are the three major differences between the U.S. and other systems of criminal justice?
Answer: no matter what we do nothing will change lass
