Group Home
An alternative to traditional in-home foster care for children, in which children are housed in an intimate or home-like setting, in which a number of unrelated children live for varying periods of time with a single set of house parents, or with a rotating staff of trained caregivers. More specialized therapeutic or treatment group homes have specially-trained staff to assist children with emotional and behavioral difficulties. The make-up and staffing of the group home can be adapted to meet the unique needs of its residents.
Question: Group Home? I have a 4-plex and I would like to use it as a Group Home. Can anyone tell how I can make this possible?
Answer: I would first go to your local housing office & see if the exisiting zoning allows that use or if it requires a variance.
Also, find out which government agency regulates the kind of group home you want to establish & what is required to qualify for licensing.
Question: group home? as i live nd a group home in its hard so i need sum advice
Answer: I know it's hard I too lived in a group home as a teenager thanks to my alcoholic mother.
Keep your head up. Stay in school. Talk to a councellor outside of the group home about whatever it is that is going on.
Ask the group home to find you a big sister or brother from the brothers and sisters association. Get yourself involved in activities away from the group home. Stay true to who you are and get out when you can. take care and good luck.

Question: How can I start a group home for the disabled in Wisconsin? I have two teenage children with disabilities and I regularly babysit for a third. I currently rent a home, and we live on disability. I would like to purchase a home and have this home become a group home starting with the 3 children and possibly adding a fourth disabled foster child. I have some help from family members and home health aides, and a limited committment of financial help to get started. What is available to help me go to the next step?
Answer: You need the different licenses from the government agencies. Once you start with one the others will let you know what you need. A building up to code. Also a trained staff.
Question: How do you start a group home for the mentally and psychically ill and how much will it cost to bar up windows? I am excited about this and I want to put locks on the outsides of the rooms and bar up all of the windows on the house. I am ready to start a business called a group home manager.
Answer: If questions regarding locks on doors and placing bars on windows are what first come to your mind, you are clueless about this field. Do some serious investigation (and Yahoo questions does not count as serious investigation) about opening a group home. Begin with the Department of Welfare or Health (or similar department) in your state and make serious inquires regarding licensing requirements/standards for both the physical facilities and professional standards. Until you have done that you are wasting your time.

Question: What is it like working in a group home for children, night shift? Thinking about accepting a position with a group home for children and adolescents whose behavioral and emotional problems interfere with their ability to function well at school or at home. My question is regarding the shift being at night (midnight - 8am) Has anyone worked this shift in this profession? What's it like? Did you enjoy it?
Answer: the night shift is usually their down time, a lot of them will be sleeping.but the ones with the problems might wake up during the night. Then morning time comes and that is when you will have your hands full. Depending on their ages You gotta bathe them , dress them, feed them and send them off to their lessons.
i have worked in a half way house but it was the afternoon shift when we would just play with the children before they had to get ready to sleep. it can be challenging at times but the lessons you learn and the bonds you create with these children carry on with you. it is a rewarding experience.
Question: How can I prevent a juvenile group home from starting next store? My neighbor said he is starting a home for people that have nowhere to go. I have looked into it and the group he has there are 18 to 25 year old males. I do not know what crimes they have been convicted of. I and the others on the street have a huge problem with this. Our street is family orientated and quiet, many children. Just wondering what I can do to prevent this from happening?

Question: Can working in a group home help me with my plans to be a nurse? So I am thinking of taking a job in a group home working with the mentally disabled. I also would like to get into nursing school. Will working at a group home help me with being a nurse? And how?
Answer: I think it will give you a feeling for interacting with people ("clients") in your care. You may deal with mentally ill, developmentally delayed, and demented (as in having dementia/Alzheimer's) clients, which you will find helpful later on.
If you do any personal hands on care (bathing, wiping bottoms ("peri care"), feeding, etc.), for example, that will help you a lot in nursing school, where you have to do all of those things. You will learn patience, re-direction of clients, and how to interact with the people you care for in their various stages of disability.
I think it would a good experience. You may also want to see if you can get a job in a nursing home/long term care facility as a nursing assistant.
Good luck!
Question: How do I get one of my homes certified/licensed in Southern California as a group home for mentally challenge? How do I get one of my homes certified/licensed in Southern California as a group home for mentally challenge adults? What kind of licenses, and personel would be required?
Answer: There's a lot more than insurance involved here - you need local permits, local licensing, etc. You'd BEST start with the local department of health and human services.
I can tell you, the INSURANCE for a house that way, is NOT CHEAP. The last one I wrote, which only had six residents, was over $5,000 a year - and you can't insure the building on a homeowners or dwelling fire policy either - because it's a commercial use.
Question: How do I go about opening my own group home for children? I am a foster parent, and I would like to start a group home for children.
Answer: well what i would say is to just go to the folster shelter where they keep little kids who's paent's or relatives didn't treat them right. Just contiue 2 stay srong.
Question: what are the qualifications for a staff member at a group home? I would like to get a position in a group home for individuals with developmental disabilities. There are several group homes in my neighborhood and I see some of the residents on the bus on a daily basis and I find it fun to interact with them. Would I have to be certified as a nursing assistant to qualify for the position? I am looking to work at group homes for higher-functioning residents.
I know that it's not easy as it seems. It may be less difficult than the more severe handicaps, but considering that the majority of them function on the intellectual levels of twelve year-olds, are in need of constant guidance.
Answer: It varies greatly from state to state. Most often, for an entry level position a high school diploma and a TB test is needed. Prior child care experience and some college is probably preferred, but usually not a requirement. Next time just ask one of the staff members...they can tell you and might be able to put in a good word for you. (Weekend positions usually are available at any given time.) I've been asked about positions with my students hundreds of times and it has never bothered me before.

Question: What are the pros and cons of opening a group home for young teen aged mothers? Where would I get the funding? I am really intrested in opening a group home. I enjoy talking and counseling yound mothers. I like to encourage them to do the right thing?
Answer: To even THINK of doing such a wonderful thing, you are truely an inspiration to people.
Yes you would get the satisfaction about helping people, but could you put up with the cons?
The ones I personally can think of are the following:
You will get bad mothers, ones who don't care about their babies and will not listen. Are you strong enough not to become just a babysitter?
Teenagers are hormonal, as you know, they will be worse when they are pregnant.
Could you deal with legal issues? What if the father is violent and constantly comes around the house threatening the mothers life, the baby's life, your life, and other teenager mothers and babies?
What if you have a teenage mum there with drug or alcohol issues, could you deal with this?
What is a baby dies, can you cope with this, and help the teenage mother?
What if the teenage mother is doing something whilst pregnant that will risk the life of the baby? Can you deal with it?
What if you get a violent teen?
What if they will not listen to you?
You sound like such a nice helpful person, but could you cope if someone doesn't listen, would you have it in your heart to throw someone out who was risking your safety as well as other girls and their babies?
I don't mean to be morbid, but these are all things you need to consider. Obviously there will be great times, helping girls who will love the help and attention, and you will help those teens and their children, but do consider the cons.
I wish you the best x
