Institutionalization
The short-term or long-term placement of children in institutions, such as hospitals, group homes or orphanages. Placement in institutions during early critical developmental periods, and for lengthy periods of time, is often associated with developmental delays due to environmental deprivation, poor staff to child ratios, or lack of early childhood stimulation.
Question: How does institutionalization and legalized exploitation and oppression keeps the majority prejudice? What role does institutionalization and legalization of exploitation and oppression play in keeping the majority ignorant of and prejudice toward minorized people. (Chinese, Japanese, Mexicans etc.)
Answer: I believe that ignorance is the culprit on both sides of this conundrum.
The only way that disadvantaged people can take matters into their own hands and break out of the social and cultural noose which stifles them is to eliminate ignorance via formal education.
With hard work, sacrifice and complete dedication to obtaining an education, minorities can break away from these prejudices.
Question: How does institutionalization fit in with the movie 'The Shawshank Redemption' ? As in, Red, Andy and Brooks and how institutionalization was used with them throughout the movie?
Answer: The Shawshank Redemption is not only as an excellent prison drama, but it is a metaphor for overcoming our own private prisons.
Question: What role did “race” play in the institutionalization of African slavery in British North America? What role did “race” play in the institutionalization of African slavery in British North America?
Answer: Relatively little. The first record of African slavery in British colonial America was made in 1619. The White Lion, an English pirate ship under the Dutch flag, had captured 20 Angolan slaves after a battle with a Portuguese ship, bound for Veracruz, Mexico
In addition to African slaves, Europeans, mostly Irish Scottish, English, and Germans, were brought over in substantial numbers as indentured servants, sometimes referred to as "white slaves". Indentured servants, sometimes shipped as punishment by local parishes, were particularly common in the British Thirteen Colonies. Historians estimate that more than half of all white immigrants to the English colonies of North America during the 17th and 18th centuries were indentured servants
The transformation from indentured servitude to racial slavery happened gradually. There were no laws regarding slavery early in Virginia's history. However, by 1640, the Virginia courts had sentenced at least one black servant to slavery.
In 1654, John Casor, an African, became the first legally recognized slave in the present United States. A court in Northampton County ruled against Casor, declaring him property for life, "owned" by the black colonist Anthony Johnson. Since persons with African origins were not English citizens by birth, they were not necessarily covered by English Common Law. Elizabeth Key Grinstead successfully gained her freedom in the Virginia courts in 1656 by making her case as the baptized Christian daughter of free Englishman Thomas Key.
In 1735, the trustees of the colony of Georgia, set up to enable worthy laborers to have a new start, passed a law to prohibit slavery but it was reestablished by 1750.
Some of the British colonies attempted to abolish the international slave trade, fearing that the importation of new Africans would be disruptive. Virginia bills to that effect were vetoed by the British Privy Council. Rhode Island forbade the import of slaves in 1774. All of the colonies except Georgia had banned or limited the African slave trade by 1786; Georgia did so in 1798 – although some of these laws were later repealed
Question: Any good books on modern institutionalization and asylums? I'm really curious about them. And I'm not interested in 1800's style asylums or whatever, I'd like a modern book. Non-fiction please, or if it's fiction, I'd like it to be deeply rooted in fact. Got any suggestions?
Answer: It's not completely current, but I found Psych Ward by Stephen somethingorother very interesting. I think it's from the 70s or so. A lot has changed since then, but not as much as the 1800s and such.
Andy Behrman's memoir Electroboy makes mention of his time in-patient, but it's only a couple chapters of it.
There's a book called Life Inside, but I've never read it.
Mockingbird Years bored me so much I couldn't finish it, but it takes place on an in-patient ward.
Question: What is the cost of institutionalization for suicidal patients? With or without medical insurance. Could anyone give me an average?
Answer: Depending on where you live an average of $1,000.00 per day for about a week without insurance (for a private hospital). Insurance covers a lot of it though. For a state funded hospital it isn't as much.
Question: How would you overcome institutionalization? I've been locked-up for 5 and a half years, so bottom line,I'm physically free, mentally locked-up, and that's became my mentality= Locked-up.
Answer: SOME OF US COULD BE BEHIND BARS AND MAINTAIN A HIGH DEGREE OF FREEDOM - IT'S A MATTER OF PROSPECTIVE AND CHOICE GIVEN THE LIMITATIONS AT HAND. BUT STIGMA CAN BE DEBILITATING. I SUGGEST GETTING INVOLVED WITH PEOPLE IN STRUCTURED, POSITIVE ACTIVITIES. GET YOUR MIND OFF OF YOURSELF BY FINDING WAYS OF BEING OF SERVICE TO OTHERS. DO COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK. THE OTHER VOLUNTEERS WILL INFECT YOU WITH THEIR POSITIVE ENERGY AND YOU WILL VALUE YOURSELF MORE AS YOU GIVE A HELPING HAND.
Question: Do you think institutionalization of the severely mentally ill is in the best interests of society? I consider the rights of the general society to be greater than the rights of one person who cannot live in society with or without support. It is better than jail.
No no no...I put that the wrong way. If they can live in society with or without support that is fine. If they cannot survive in society at all (regardless of support offered), then they should be in an institution.
Answer: I think it is very rare that a person is as you describe. Too often there is not enough money or compassion to provide a person with what they need. Patience and love will turn people around.
I help a person who is definitely living with a mental illness and the medical system fails him at every turn. I think he needs to be institutionalized TEMPORARILY to help him get his life on track.
He doesn't take his meds regularly - because he is severely depressed. So put him somewhere for TWO WEEKS and make sure he takes his meds each day at the same time - and then I THINK his depression will lessen and he can then become responsible for his own mental health.
He might not be well but he will be well enough to know he wants to be well. Right now he is so depressed he can't imagine being well so why take meds that have no possible purpose?
Question: Is deinstitutionalisation or institutionalization more effective in helping the mentally ill? Explain.
Answer: - Institutionalization (when properly done) - but metnally ill is a big concept, and this answer does not apply universally to that concept.
Mentally ill need an environment that both tolerates and celebrates the alternate condition of their universe, and the institution is the most likely form of success with that.
Question: What is meant by the institutionalization of the fairy tale? Based of Zack Zipes "Spells Of Enchantment?"
Answer: I was ready to answer until I saw the qualifier on there, but why let that stop me?
It means that we are being taught to expect a fairy-tale ending, "And they all lived happily ever after." We, and more importantly our children and grandchildren, are being told that everything will work out just fine in the end and all will be sweetness and light if we just go along with the program.
Guess what? That's a great big fat lie. In real life, the trolls and ogres have an advantage called ambition. They are trying to do something, good or not. What use is a handsome prince who rides around hoping for adventure? He probably wouldn't know which side was in the right if he did find a battle going on.
Question: What is the difference between Reification and Institutionalization?
Answer: Reification is when there's this conveyor belt full of candy bars that didn't get covered with enough chocolate and the line supervisor sees this and has the entire batch recalled so they get covered in chocolate the right way.
And institutionalization is when you start hearing things and you eventually go crazy.
Question: why is the roman catholic heirarchy silent on the institutionalization of 35% sop on government projects? isn't this a moral issue or getting a cut is enough to silence morality?
Answer: I am Kapamilya myself and wouldn't know about SOP. Isn't that on the other network? Sa "kabila"? (On the next station ? GMA)
There is another meaning of S.O.P. that am aware of, which is "standard operating procedure". If this equates to "lagay" (cut) when used in the context of government projects, and the World Bank report on corruption in the country (the Republic of the Philippines), I'd say the Roman Catholic hierarchy ought to denounce any "institutionalization", except if as you imply, they'd reap benefit thereon. In which case morality would, indeed, be compromised.
I think a similar predicament has been brought to the limelight with certain church dignitaries standing by some gambling institution of the government, since their constituencies benefit through charities funded by them.
If my answer is way off the mark and this "sop" stands for something else, I make my most abject apologies now, to you and other answerers. And to ICAR (Iglesia Catolica Apostolica Romana) authorities who could be slighted by my humble opinion.
But ... may they all ROT in hell if I am right, however, for holding their silence on this travesty of justice, and for making me doubt myself on my own answer!!!
Question: what is the best way to over come institutionalization? I've been locked up for 3yrs and 5mn and I would like to know what is the best way to get out of the mentality that keeps me locked up
Answer: An Arabian proverb goes: "If you have health, you have hope. If you have hope, you have everything."
Question: In the United Kingdom, what are the laws regarding mental institutionalization? In under 18's and over 18's.
How does one go about it, what is the process, is there a cost etc.
Answer: Its above 18, you can search in Google, I am not from UK,
Question: Legality of forced institutionalization in the US? In the US, is it possible for a psychiatrist/psychologist/therapist to institutionalize someone against their will? I seem to recall hearing a case about this a few years back but I thought that there was no such allowable legality within the US.
Answer: If ordered by a judge the person can be institutionalized. I'm pretty sure that a psychiatrist/psychologist can recommend it to the judge to get it processed. Of course, PD, medical, fire, and hospital personnell can get a 72 hour psych hold if they think the person is a threat to themselves or others. If they are determined to be a threat, then they are given the option. If they are a large enough threat, then it may be forced as well.
Question: What approaches have been used to care for the mentally ill? What are pros/cons of de-institutionalization?
Answer: In NSW Australia the Health Commission have a policy of integrating, or as you put de-institutionalizating people. The housing department is used for this purpose, akin to changing deck chairs on the Titanic. The positive is that in some cases people are able to make a fresh start. The negative is that these people make the ammenity unlivable to the existing tenants who have to suffer the odd behavior of not sleeping at night disturbing the quiet rest of others. Separate communities and housing such as the annex to the University campus at Rydalmere are all right.
The main problem with the treatment of these people is "one size fits all" medication that turns them into zombies. In spite of the effort of the media to portray Australia as a heathen nation, the truth is that these people need exposure to Christian ministry for healing. Only Infidels would interpret the Bible in such a way to negate the teaching that Jesus heals people today of the evil spirits of infirmity. I think you will find that the problem is about to explode into an uncontrollable situation with the new "Ice" the Crystal Meth drug now on our streets. Healing in these matters is only about 5% in America through conventional methods, but, in Jesus Christ it is about 80%. You tell me if our Government is culpable by ignoring this information.
Question: What does the "institutionalization of gender" entail? What does it mean?
Answer: Sorry, Not a clue what your asking for.
Question: Is permanent institutionalization a good alternative to suicide? If not, what is?
Answer: I would have to say “yes” because life, by its very nature, is potential, and is unpredictable. Thus one can never really know that the institutionalization will be permanent, nor can you know that your reasons for contemplating suicide will be permanent. Despite the way things seem from inside of a deep depression, life can always take a turn for the better – joy, healing, and meaning can come from utterly unpredictable sources, especially if you make a conscious decision to venture out on a spiritual quest.
By the way, based on your earlier question (which I was too late to answer), I suspect that you might be a transsexual (whether you know yourself well enough to identify this in yourself at this time). If my guess is correct, then you might discover support in a variety of unexpected forms by investigating the transsexual community – hear their personal stories, etc., and reflect upon whether this has any meaning for you.
And another suggestion: If you think there may have been traumas in your life (even if they don’t really seem all that traumatic), you might want to investigate a relatively new (since the 1980s) form of therapy called EMDR (it stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming). I have recently learned some amazing things about this, and I know someone who has tried it with great success. It is well-known to work with people who have post-traumatic stress disorder (veterans of war, abuse, etc.) but more recently, the range of emotional disturbances for which it seems effective has increased. If I am right about your gender tensions, EMDR will not “cure” it (because transsexuality is not a problem to be cured, but rather it is simply who you are and you need to understand what this means for you), but EMDR may help alleviate a variety of the complicating factors that are making you depressed, anxious, or whatever.
Question: Novel illustrating the institutionalization of christianity.? Does such a book exist?
Answer: Try 'Q' by four italian writer's collectively known as 'Luther Blisset', published about 3 years ago. The tale is a swashbuckling adventure yarn set in the 15th century at the birth of protestantism in europe. It chart's the rise of the anabaptist cult as they find different ways to rebel against the catholic church. You see the rise of the printing press, the power of the vatican bank and the institutionalisation of people's minds by the power of rome. The four writer's are academic's, so the story is told in great period detail with a section in the back about the modern political and capitalist machinations of the church.
Question: Does institutionalization impose boundaries on philosophical [logical] thought? Institutionalization of the magic threesome: philosophy, doctrinal religion and science?
Historically the three appear to be locked in a death-spiral of interlocking action/reaction as opposed to independent examination of reality, each in its own sphere of interest.
Answer: absolutely. but eventually those bounderies are overcome with a new paradigm shift. like from capernicus, to newton, to einstein. from aristotle, to descartes, to kierkegaard. from moses, to jesus, to muhamed.
that "history" is only a 'western' history. the 'east' tends to synthesize all three into one.
Question: Does the institutionalization of Religion have any reasonable basis whatsoever? Thanks for your answers
Yes, the human tendency for social organization will always be present. That implies a self imposed faith on an individual's part. However......
I mean is there an altruistic reason for Religion to be forced into inertia and stasis?
...it's resistance towards change?
For curbing anarchy?
Is it benevolent or deceitful of the ruling religious elites to cramp it?
Isn't Religion after all just good advice, unseparable with the process of reasoning?
Who is benefiting from the institutionalization of Religion?
sorry
typo error- inseparable
Answer: "Believing that the world as cognised during the waking state is real and that the highest goal is the attainment of happiness in that world, man accumulates the insruments and symbols of that happiness; he fashions after his own taste and inclinations according to the dictates of his own reason, the laws, ideals, institutions and principles that would bolster that happiness. This attempt leads to a philosophy which can be named " Western ".
But can the goal of Life be just this - to struggle amidst the waves of joy and grief that rise and fall in this visible objective world, to be carried along the current of desire, gathering food, shelter, comfort and pleasure, and finally, to flounder into the jaws of death? Consider what is happening now ; in the name of progress, art is degraded into immoral and sensuous entertainment; educational advance results, not in advance of humility and reverence, but in rampant indiscipline, arrogance and irreverence. The emphasis is long placed on the development of character and the promotion of virtue through education has now been dropped. In this place enthroned as ideals worldly success, self - aggrandisement and high standard of living. Greed is going out of Control. Scientific development is not resulting in peace and happiness, but increase in terror, unrest and anxiety. Man is analysing and utilising the outer world; but the inner world which is basic is ignored and forgotten. "
