Question: What is the best speed on interstate to save gas? I commute every day for 25 miles and 20 miles are pure interstate with a 70 mph limit. I own a 98 Nissan Altima GXE and I was wondering if there is a specific speed I should go on the interstate to save gas. I was told 50 but its hard to believe I think its too low. Any ideas?

Answer: Yes, as others have mentioned, above around 50mph, not only is your engine revving higher (thus decreasing fuel efficiency), drag/wind resistance is increasing exponentially, which again means the engine needs to work harder to maintain the speed. But seriously now, I wouldn't suggest driving that slow just to save some dollars, because the fuel saving is gonna be negligible and at the end of the day there's more to life than saving money. But here's some more fuel saving tips anyway - Fuel is most used during acceleration, so slower acceleration = less fuel. While cruising on a freeway, limit overtaking and try to maintain a CONSTANT speed, because a varying speed means you are constantly decelerating/accelerating - As others have mentioned, tyre pressure is a really big thing; generally about 32psi is about right? - It's probably a small thing, but mirrors create quite a bit of drag, so if you're really pedantic maybe consider pulling them in and doing a few more head checks. - If possible, try to slot in behind some who is driving at a constant speed (preferably a truck) as this will give you a nice drag-reduced zone - wind resistance will be drastically reduced, thus improving fuel economy. It can be dangerous though, and many drivers won't appreciate it, so proceed with caution, and don't sue me (actually you can't, cos I'm in Australia and you don't know my name... muahah!) - In city driving, coast to a stop as much as possible (ie don't speed up to a red light and stop really quickly); as soon as you see the light go orange, slow down gradually and come a nice easy stop. Hope that helps, and remember, there's sometimes more to life than saving fuel, and if travelling at 70mph instead of 50mph is costing you $2 more in fuel a day but saving you 10 or 15 minutes of dreary travelling, I'd say it's worth it....
