Interstate
An action that takes place involving two or more States, typically where the order for support is in one State and one of the parties resides elsewhere. Can also be between two Tribes or a State and a Tribe; also called interjurisdictional or intergovernmental.
Question: What is the best speed on interstate to save gas? I commute every day for 25 miles and 20 miles are pure interstate with a 70 mph limit. I own a 98 Nissan Altima GXE and I was wondering if there is a specific speed I should go on the interstate to save gas. I was told 50 but its hard to believe I think its too low. Any ideas?
Answer: Yes, as others have mentioned, above around 50mph, not only is your engine revving higher (thus decreasing fuel efficiency), drag/wind resistance is increasing exponentially, which again means the engine needs to work harder to maintain the speed. But seriously now, I wouldn't suggest driving that slow just to save some dollars, because the fuel saving is gonna be negligible and at the end of the day there's more to life than saving money.
But here's some more fuel saving tips anyway
- Fuel is most used during acceleration, so slower acceleration = less fuel. While cruising on a freeway, limit overtaking and try to maintain a CONSTANT speed, because a varying speed means you are constantly decelerating/accelerating
- As others have mentioned, tyre pressure is a really big thing; generally about 32psi is about right?
- It's probably a small thing, but mirrors create quite a bit of drag, so if you're really pedantic maybe consider pulling them in and doing a few more head checks.
- If possible, try to slot in behind some who is driving at a constant speed (preferably a truck) as this will give you a nice drag-reduced zone - wind resistance will be drastically reduced, thus improving fuel economy. It can be dangerous though, and many drivers won't appreciate it, so proceed with caution, and don't sue me (actually you can't, cos I'm in Australia and you don't know my name... muahah!)
- In city driving, coast to a stop as much as possible (ie don't speed up to a red light and stop really quickly); as soon as you see the light go orange, slow down gradually and come a nice easy stop.
Hope that helps, and remember, there's sometimes more to life than saving fuel, and if travelling at 70mph instead of 50mph is costing you $2 more in fuel a day but saving you 10 or 15 minutes of dreary travelling, I'd say it's worth it....
Question: Do the rates for interstate moving change based on day of the week? I am planning an interstate move. In general, does it matter for the price whether you want to move on a weekday or a weekend?
Answer: Moving companies may offer discounts or may charge premiums for certain dates or days of the week. Your best bet would be to get multiple quotes from multiple companies. Just be sure to get everything in writing in order to protect yourself. Also, it would be good to research your rights. The link to the government's site on your rights when moving is www.protectyourmove.gov.
Feel free to visit my site at the link below to get multiple quotes.

Question: What is the busiest interstate you have ever driven on? After traveling over most of the Eastern US, I'd still have to say that I-75 in Northen Kentucky is the busiest stretch of interstate I have ever been on.
Answer: That's just what I was thinking when I read the question! Northern Kentucky intersections are the busiest I've ever been on.
Question: How safe is driving on the interstate into Atlanta? We are planning a trip there in March, and will be coming from Tennessee by way of the interstate. I have heard that traffic is really bad around Atlanta, so I am just wondering how bad it really is.
I am going to have to go into downtown, since we are staying at a hotel near the Tabernacle. (We are coming to Atlanta for a concert.) What is the best way to safely do this? I guess I should have included this in my original question.
Answer: If you are coming from Tennessee, you will take I-75 south through Chattanooga to Atlanta. You will notice that I-75 expands from 4 lanes to 8 or 12 lanes once you hit the metro area. I assume your concert starts around 7 or 8pm? If you driving into Atlanta at that time, traffic will not be all that bad. You will notice that I-75 expands from 4 lanes to 8 or 12 lanes once you hit the metro area. That's because everyone will be driving north on 75 out of Atlanta.
A few things to think about:
When you drive on I-75 South into the city, it merges with I-85. Atlantans call this the Downtown Connector. Traffic from that merge until your exit for the Tabernacle will slow a lot. You can either plan ahead to be early, or you can take some surface streets. You can take the Northside Dr/Howell Mill Rd exit prior to the Downtown Connector and cut across town that way. If you decide to do this, send me a message because you won't get a clear idea of how to do this from a map.
Question: How do interstate police operate, i have a specific question? Do the majority of stops on the interstate end with a warning or traffic ticket...
How often do traffic stops turn into investigations, which lead to detaining the citizen, searching his property, and pulling out craZY DECEITFUL tactics like compound questions... You dont have any drugs in the car, you dont mind if i search? Intimidation. Good cop, bad cop.
Answer: Stops on the interstate highways are usually conducted by the State Police for whichever State you are in.
Police are not permitted to search unless they have probable cause. You have the right to refuse consent to search, but if they have probable cause, in most cases the car can be searched without a warrant.
LOL@ the "crazy deceitful tactic" of compound questions. You don't have the "right" not to be questioned by use of compound questions.
Question: I have a fear of driving on the interstate, what can I do? Are there others like me? I like an house north of our major city, Atlanta, and I have this huge fear of driving on the interstate. I do ok if someone else drives, but if a big truck goes right beside on either side I freak out. & if 2 get on either side at the time I practically hold my breath until there is an opening again. Everything seems so close to the vehicle though. When I use mapquest, I always use the avoid highways option and go the longer route. Any suggestions?
Answer: Just tell yourself this: No matter how bad you drive, there is someone out there you drives worse than you.
Question: What clause in what document allows Congress to regulate interstate commerce? What clause in what document allows Congress to regulate interstate commerce? Is Allegheny Airlines subject to these regulations? State several reasons for your conclusion.
What if Allegheny Airlines only operated in the state of Pennsylvania? Give arguments both pro and can.
Answer: It's the Commerce Clause in the Constitution now do your homework. And read the Constitution too for thwe love of god...
Question: What do I need to think about when moving interstate? My fiance and I will be moving interstate in 3 weeks time, due to him getting a job transfer.
What factors do we need to take into account when planning the move?
We don't have a lot of stuff, so we will be moving ourselves, not hiring a moving service.
Answer: Change your driving licence to the new State one. Here in QLD you must advise all address changes within 14 days, so take that into account with your own State.
Change your car registration also to the new State.
Tell everyone, banks, medicare, etc, about the new address.
Question: What do you do if you are driving along the interstate and a tornado comes? I live in Alabama. We have just been released from work due to severe weather and Tornado warnings. Schools have been cancelled as well as daycares all over town. I have a long drive home. I work in the city but live way out in the country. I am driving about an hour down the interstate (no ditches that I can think of) and then 20 more minutes down back country roads. What should I do if a tornado comes??
Answer: "What if you're in your car?
It's hard to know what to do if you hear a tornado warning and you are in your car. The best thing to do is try to find solid shelter, such as a well-built building. Park your car off the road so that traffic can get through, and get inside the shelter.
This tornado occurred on May 24, 1998, near Medford, Oklahoma. (Photo copyright 1998 by Chris Kridler / skydiary.com)
Do not stand outside and look at the tornado. They can move quickly toward you, and lightning is a danger, too. It's also dangerous to stay in your car if a tornado is close to you. It will offer you no protection. Again, look for solid shelter.
It is also dangerous to hide under a highway overpass. A famous video of a tornado made a lot of people think that was a safe thing to do, but most overpasses will not offer you protection. The people in the video were not hit directly by the tornado. In fact, debris hurtling at 200 or 300 miles per hour could hit you while you are under the bridge, or a tornado could blow you out! Tragic deaths occurred in the May 3, 1999, tornadoes around Oklahoma City because people tried to hide under overpasses. In addition, when everyone parks under an overpass, traffic is blocked, leaving some people helpless and stuck in their cars in the path of a tornado.
Common advice is to get into a ditch and cover your head. If that is all that is available to you, then do it. If you have no shelter, the excellent Storm Prediction Center tornado safety tips suggest lying flat, face-down in a low area and away from cars and trees, which a tornado could throw on top of you. Nonetheless, a ditch offers little protection. If the tornado is still far away, it is better to drive away at right angles to the tornado's motion, if traffic allows, and find shelter in a building if you can."
Question: When several cars are speeding on the interstate, how does the police know which car he checked by radar? I often see state troopers on the entrance ramps on the interstate. When they do a radar or laser check, how do they know which car they checked if several were speeding and the interstate has numerous cars on it?
Answer: if it's some rich gringo in a lexus heading to his next board meeting, the cops let 'em pass; if it's a suburan soccer mom racing in a minivan juiced up with antidepressants with screaming little brats, the cops give 'em a pass; if it's a dark-skinned "brotha" in a pimped-out ride or a truckful of mexicans heading to the next construction site, rest assured, the piggies are gonna pull 'em over! ¡orale!
Question: Is it illegal to drive on the interstate with a dog in the back of a truck? I was driving into work this morning and passed a truck on the interstate with a large dog in the back. It bothered me because I think interstate speeds are too fast for someone to have an animal riding around loosely in the bed of a truck. I almost called the highway patrol to report it, but I decided not to because I wasn't sure if the driver was breaking a law and I didn't want to call the police for something that wasn't reportable. Was he breaking the law? He was going in the slower lane about 60-65mph, but still I worried about the dog's safety.
Answer: It depends on the state you live in. I agree that it is irresponsible and dangerous for dog owners to do this, even on residential streets. These owners don't think about what would happen if a piece of debris flew into the dog or what would happen if they have to slow down quickly, stop quickly, or swerve. I think Maine does have a law that prohibits the practice. But people are still morons.
Question: How have Supreme Court decisions impacted the Federal government's ability to regulate interstate commerce? How have Supreme Court decisions impacted the Federal government's ability to regulate interstate commerce and does the ability to regulate interstate commerce give the Federal government more power than it would have otherwise?
Answer: That's some interesting wording there. I wonder, is your teacher really that dumb, or is he just trying to brainwash you and the other students?
Question: What are the railroad style barriers for used for on some interstate highways? Ever since moving to Virginia we have noticed railroad crossing style barriers at the entrances and exits for the interstate. Im not sure if any other state may use them but they seem to be a big thing in the area we moved to. What are they used for?
Answer: I am a truck driver so I know where you are talking about. They are part of an automatic fog detection system that when heavy fog forms it automaticly shuts down the interstate. also the police can manualy activate them if they need to shut down the road. Some other states use them. WI has them along I43 S of milwaukee. WY has them along I80
Question: How can I get over my fear of driving on the interstate? I've been driving for a little over a year...I only drove once on the interstate&that was with the instructor in drivers ed a year ago.
Answer: You just have to jump in and start doing it! It eases into you with practice.
With that said, though, there are ways to make it much easier:
1.) Get a friend (or driving instructor) to accomply and instruct you, if necessary.
2.) Practice it during less busy times - during the night, a dead weekend morning, etc.
3.) Move up from lesser freeways. If there are any state freeways in your area with a 55mph speed limit, start with those. Once you get comfortable, then try the interstate.
Question: Why is the concept of full faith and credit so important to interstate relationships? Why is the concept of full faith and credit so important to interstate relationships?
Answer: To avoid misunderstanding that will be caused by your different culture orientation.
Question: How do you get a photo of a scene off a busy interstate? There is a photo I want to take for not only my photography class but myself as well, but the only problem is I would have to pull over on the side of a busy interstate on a bridge and get out of my car to get the shot. Has anyone ever had a similar issue or have any advice for getting this fantastic shot?
The photo is of the arch bridge outside Richmond, VA that has a railroad on top. Probably won't help most of you.
Answer: I once needed a shot of a busy interstate to get an exit sign for a photo essay I was doing while I was a student at Iowa State University. I found the spot I wanted, pulled off on the shoulder, got out of my car, and took the shot.
I don't know that doing so is illegal. I do know that doing so can be very dangerous. If you decide to do this, you need to be very mindful of traffic. Pull as far off the road as you can and if you can get out of your car on the side next to the guard rail. I know that shoulders on the interstates are supposed to be for emergency stopping only, and you could possibly get a ticket for stopping just to take a picture. If a State Trouper stops, you will at least get a good talking to about how dangerous stopping to take a picture is.
You might want to try having someone drive you by the spot where you want to take the picture and either shoot through the windshield or an open window. You might have to make several passes to get the excat shot you want, but it's a much safer alternative to actually getting out of your car. I live about an hour southeast of Richmond, and I know how busy the interstates can get up there.
Question: What do you think is the best interstate bike and why? Style, comfort, control, anything you think is integral on an interstate cruiser. The Goldwing is a strong competitor, but I want to know what everyone thinks is the top of the line bike for the open highway.
Note: Any harley fanatics can just answer a different question unless you can back up your choice. If you think the Road King is the best, then you can't just back it up by saying "'cause it's a harley and metrics suck". Give me real evidence.
Answer: bmx 1200

honda gold wing

Question: Is driving the interstate better for your car? I was curious, which is better on your car driving on the interstate (to and from work 5 days a week) or just taking the regular roads. I have a 2001 PT Cruiser but I was just curious which one was harder on your car.
Answer: Interstate will typically be less wear per mile (no braking, etc) unless you live where there is congestion. In that case surface streets can be easier because the stops are at lights and the congestion is typically a bit less.
Typically the least gas used is the best commute since the more stressful routes take more gas per mile, but obviously a longer commute (in miles) will take more of a toll in general.
Question: Can a county police officer issue a speeding ticket on an interstate highway? I recently got a ticket going 79 in a 65 in Virginia on interstate 85 from a county police officer from whoodathunk Virginia. Does he have jurisdiction to issue a speeding ticket on a interstate highway?
I am thinking of possible avenues to get the ticket nullified b/c I don't want my insurance to increase!
Answer: Yes, it is within his jurisdiction.
