Original Birth Certificate
The birth certificate issued at the birth of a child and before an adoption takes place.
Question: Birth Certificate - Is there a difference between an original one and a certified one? I'm going to getting myself a state ID in a day, and was reading up on the rquirments from the DMV. They say I need, and I quote a "certified birth certificate."
I have my original birth certificate (not a copy). Is this the same thing? If not, how do I go about getting a certified one and how long does it take?
Answer: Usually when you get the copy of it, the place will stamp the paper (so it has the raised marks on it) to prove it's an original copy from them, and not a photocopy which could have been altered.
Question: Is asking for the President for his original birth certificate such a bad request? I don't understand, birther or not.. why is wanting to see Obama's original birth certificate such a horrible request that people get offended and offensive? People say that showing his original birth certificate won't satisfy the birthers, but is that the reason they aren't releasing his birth certificate? If he is really born in the United States then there is nothing to worry about. I don't understand why people get so worked up for something as simple as asking for the President's birth certificate.
Answer: His birth certificate has been shown and authenticated several times.*
Question: How can I see my original birth certificate? I was born in Los Angeles County in 1953 but in 1959 my original birth certificate was sealed by the county and a new one was issued with vague information showing my adoptive parents names as birth parents.
I'm not sure, since I was born at an Army Post Hospital, if I can recover my original birth certificate through the military.
Answer: apply to the govt. dept that deals with those rulings
Question: How can I get a copy of my original birth certificate? I was adopted by my mothers second husband. The only birth certificate I have shows my adoptive father listed as my father. I would like to have a copy of the original birth certificate that shows my biological father listed. He was always a part of my life and I would like this for sentimental reasons.
I beleive it is a sealed record. Is it possible to have it unsealed now that i am an adult?
Answer: You would have to contact the Bureau of Vital Statistics in the county you were born. They will send you the appropriate paperwork, to fill out, the cost and the birth certificate (as long as your record is not sealed).
Question: How to get a copy of an original birth certificate? How can you get a copy of an original birth certificate? My husband was adopted by one of his step fathers at a young age and he'd like to see what his original birth certificate says.
Answer: Call the health department in the town/state he was born in. They will be able to provide copies for a fee.
Question: Can an new employer require you to give them your original birth certificate? That's along with a copy of your state ID/license and social security card.
Adecco Staffing told me they require my original birth certificate, my driver's license, and social security card.
I was born and raised in America, served in the military, and have been working since I was 15. I don't feel I should have to give anyone my original birth certificate for employment if they have a copy of my ID and social security card.
Answer: No you don't give the original to them to keep the but they can ask for the original to look at an/or make a copy if it's for the I-9 Eligibility for Employment Form in which case you only need one document from list A, if you don't have that, one document from List B and List C; so would either provide them with one document or two, no more is required, but I would ask what the reason is for? If it just to verify your proof of eligibility for employment then you only need to provide from the list below. Note is is illegal for an employer to tell you what forms to provide. That Anti-Discrimination Notice is right on the form in bold letters, so point that out if you need to.
List A (Documents that establish both identity and employment eligibility) - So you would only need one of these
United States Passport
Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-551)
Temporary Resident Card (I-688)
Employment Authorization Document (I-766, I-688B, or I-688A)
Foreign Passport with temporary I-551 stamp
For aliens authorized to work only for a specific employer, foreign passport with Form I-94 authorizing employment with this employer
If you don't have anything from list A, you will need to provide one document from this list (which is List B) and one document from List C (see below)
List B (Documents that establish identity only)
Driver's license issued by a state or outlying possession
ID card issued by a state or outlying possession
Native American tribal document
Canadian driver's license or ID card with a photograph (for Canadian aliens authorized to work only for a specific employer)
School ID card with a photography
Voter's registration card
U.S. Military card or draft record
Military dependent's ID Card
List C (Documents that establish employment eligibility only)
Social Security account number card without employment restrictions
Original or certified copy of a birth certificate with an official seal issued by a state or local government agency
Certification of Birth Abroad
US Citizen ID Card
Native American tribal document
Form I-94 authorizing employment with this employer (for aliens authorized to work only for a specific employer)
You do provide the original documents, however they do not keep these documents, they will complete the employer's section of the I-9 Form and return the originals to you (same day, in their presence), they can make copies of this - it is legal.
There is no legal reason for them to be requesting these three forms of ID, as I stated earlier, nor can they tell you which documents to provide if it's for the I-9 Employment Eligibility Form.
Here's a pdf link (you'll need to cut and past) on the I-9 Form that you fill out w/every employer. Feel free to check it out before hand: www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-9.pdf
Hope this helps!

Question: can i get my original birth certificate after reunion with bfamily? I have been re united with my birth mom for almost 3 years now. We both would like to access the sealed documents involving my adoption. She had a copy of my original birth certificate but it was ruined in a flood. I would just like to hold that darn thing for myself. My adoption was private and under New York State law. Is there any way I could obtain this information as seeing no party (including my parents) want anonymity any more?
Answer: Yes, by petitioning the Court in which the adoption was finalized. Use forms 27-A and 27-D available to print out here:
http://www.nycourts.gov/forms/familycour…
They treat you like dirt on the bottom of their shoes but persevere and petition anyways; it's your right
Caution: My first petition was denied despite 'permission' and 'waivers of service' signed by ALL participants to the adoption
Judge denied the petition citing the 'natural father's rights'. He was never given any rights, because he was not married to my mother at the time his name was excluded from the Birth Certificate, he had no right to sign the relinquishment and he was not a party to the adoption and NOW they want to say he has rights? when it was the State that denied him rights at the time?
Bah. Yeah, bitter, with good reason!
Oh and makes sure you're all registered with NYS Adoption Information Registry and show the Court proof. (Adoptive parents no longer have to register - my Judge was also not up-to-date on current legislation when he denied my petition!)
Good luck, if you need any help at all I'm happy to compare notes and give guidance where I can :)

They say I have to purchase a new one, which in the state of Maine is 60 dollars. Is there anyway around this?

Question: Do I need an ORIGINAL birth certificate to renew my passport or can I use a COPY? Do I need an ORIGINAL birth certificate to renew my passport or can I use a COPY??
I cant find the original.. could I just use a copy.
Answer: Normally u only need ur expired passport to renew it. But if they are asking for birth certificate, then u surely need original one (they will never accept a copy, if notarised copy is not acceptable). You can always apply for a replacement or duplicate copy of ur original birth certificate from Registry for Births (normally local government offices).

I still have a copy of my original birth certificate with my birth-given name. How hard would it be to legally change back to my original surname with the original birth certificate?
Answer: You can call yourself whatever you want, as long as it is not done with the intention to defraud. Changing birth records is harder, but you do not need to do that.

Question: Do I need my original birth certificate to bring to SS office? to change my name?
I just recently got married. I have the SS-5 form I need to fill out, the original marriage license and a photo I.D.
What else do I need? and if I need my birth certificate does it have to be the original??
Thanks!
Answer: I don't think you need your birth certificate, if you have your Social Security card. It may depend on your location. I would call the SS office and tell them that you are changing your name and ask if the original certificate is needed. I did that 5 months ago when I changed my name.
Question: how to get my original birth certificate? someone from the USPS told me i need my original birth certificate to get a passport. She said theres a number to call where they'll send me another original, not a copy. becuase they wont accept those. Does anyone know where i can find it?
Answer: To apply for a certified copy you must contact the dept. of statistics in the state or county you were born. They're going to ask why you want this copy and they'll want a picture ID (your driver's license is enough). You can get the cost and what procedure to follow at their web site. Most states have a web site. I personally would make sure I get my copy sent certified mail. You don't want anyone "accidentally" getting that document. They accept credit cards. Good luck.
Question: DO I have to bring an original birth certificate for my drivers license or just a regular i.d.? I need answers !
Answer: it has to be the original copy or certified copy of your birth certificate. photocopies aren't acceptable.
all you have to do is go to the courthouse in the county where you were born and pay a few$ and they will get you one. or if you don't live in the county then write them and they will send you one.
Question: do you need your original birth certificate to go to canada? or can you have a copy? my friend doesn't have his original birth certificate. can he get into, and back from canada with a copy?
Answer: My understanding is that you would need the original, they do not accept copies. If your friend doesn't have one, they should contact the government to obtain a new copy. I know people who have been turned away at the boarder because they brought photocopies instead of the originial.
I hope that helps.
